    Nanoparticle growth following photochemical Ī±ā€ and Ī²ā€pinene oxidation at Appledore Island during International Consortium for Research on Transport and Transformation/Chemistry of Halogens at the Isles of Shoals 2004

    Nanoparticle events were observed 48 times in particle size distributions at Appledore Island during the International Consortium for Atmospheric Research on Transport and Transformation/Chemistry of Halogens on the Isles of Shoals (ICARTT/CHAiOS) field campaign from 2 July to 12 August of 2004. Eighteen of the nanoparticle events showed particle growth and occurred during mornings when peaks in mixing ratios of Ī±ā€ and Ī²ā€pinene and ozone made production of condensable products from photochemical oxidation probable. Many pollutants and other potential precursors for aerosol formation were also at elevated mixing ratios during these events, including NO, HNO3, NH3, HCl, propane, and several other volatile organic carbon compounds. There were no consistent changes in particle composition, although both submicron and supermicron particles included high maximum concentrations of methane sulfonate, sulfate, iodide, nitrate, and ammonium during these events. Nanoparticle growth continued over several hours with a nearly linear rate of increase of diameter with time. The observed nanoparticle growth rates varied from 3 to 13 nm hāˆ’1. Apparent nanoparticle aerosol mass fractions (yields) were estimated to range from less than 0.0005 to almost 1 using Ī±ā€ and Ī²ā€pinene as the presumed particle source. These apparent high aerosol mass fractions (yields) at low changes in aerosol mass are up to two orders of magnitude greater than predictions from extrapolated laboratory parameterizations and may provide a more accurate assessment of secondary organic aerosol formation for estimating the growth of nanoparticles in global models

    Widespread changes in UK air quality observed from space

    Previous studies have used surface observations of pollutants (e.g., nitrogen dioxide [NOā‚‚] and aerosols) to evaluate improvements in United Kingdom (UK) air quality over recent decades. However, surface monitoring networks provide limited spatial coverage and are not always representative of air quality over a wider region. Satellite observations, such as tropospheric column NOā‚‚ (TCNOā‚‚), aerosol optical depth (AOD) and subā€column (0ā€“6 km) ozone (SCOā‚ƒ), provide widespread monitoring of air quality on a national scale. In this study, we use such observations to analyse trends in UK air quality, between 2005 and 2015, finding significant decreases in TCNOā‚‚ and AOD over UK pollution hotspots. The largest changes in shortā€lived NOā‚‚ are located over populated (i.e., source) regions, associated with large emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOā‚“). AOD changes are more spread out, and less strongly associated with source regions, due to a longer aerosol lifetime, secondary aerosol formation and nonā€urban aerosol sources. SCOā‚ƒ shows no significant trends over England/Wales, but significant positive trends over Scotland, which is consistent with previous studies of changes in background tropospheric ozone in other remote regions of northā€western Europe

    Dutch translation and adaptation of the Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale (BDEFS)

    Background: Based on his model of self-regulation and executive functions, Barkley developed a self- and other-report questionnaire (the Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale ā€“ BDEFS). The BDEFS measures deficits in executive functions as expressed in daily life activities like self-management of time, self-organization, self-restraint, self-motivation, and self-regulation of emotion. Objectives: This study created and analyzed a Dutch translation and adaptation in conformance with official guidelines. Methods: The Dutch and English BDEFS were completed by 25 bilingual Dutch adults to evaluate semantic correspondence. Consequently, 60 Dutch participants completed the Dutch BDEFS, Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-Eleventh edition (BIS-11) and the Dysexecutive Questionnaire (DEX) to evaluate concurrent validity and internal consistency. Results: The versions demonstrated sufficient semantic equivalence and Spearmanā€™s rho of total scores was high; items mostly showed moderate-to-high correlations. Regression analysis showed no proportional bias. Internal consistency was also high. Correlations between BDEFS, BIS-11 and DEX supported concurrent validity. Discussion: We conclude that a successful BDEFS translation and adaptation was created with satisfactory reliability and validity. Further research should assess the utility of the BDEFS in Dutch clinical practice

    An Artificial Intelligence Approach to Dyscalculia

    Dyscalculia stands for a brain-based condition that makes it hard to make sense of numbers and mathematical concepts. Some adolescents with dyscalculia cannot grasp basic number concepts. They work hard to learn and memorize basic number facts. They may know what to do in mathematical classes but do not understand why they are doing it. In other words, they miss the logic behind it. However, it may be worked out in order to decrease its degree of severity. For example, disMAT, an app developed for android may help children to apply mathematical concepts, without much effort, that is turning in itself, a promising tool to dyscalculia treatment. Thus, this work focuses on the development of an Intelligent System to estimate children evidences of dyscalculia, based on data obtained on-the-fly with disMAT. The computational framework is built on top of a Logic Programming framework to Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, complemented with a Case-Based problem solving approach to computing, that allows for the handling of incomplete, unknown, or even contradictory information

    Avoiding Irrational NeuroLaw Exuberance: A Plea for Neuromodesty

    In a 2002 editorial published in The Economist, the following warning was given: Genetics may yet threaten privacy, kill autonomy, make society homogeneous and gut the concept of human nature. But neuroscience could do all of these things first. The genome was fully sequenced in 2001, and there has not been one resulting major advance in therapeutic medicine since. Thus, even in its most natural applied domain-medicine-genetics has not had the far-reaching consequences that were envisioned. The same has been true for various other sciences that were predicted to revolutionize the law, including behavioral psychology, sociology, psychodynamic psychology, and others. This will also be true of neuroscience, which is simply the newest science on the block. Neuroscience is not going to do the terrible things The Economist fears, at least not for the foreseeable future. Neuroscience has many things to say but not nearly as much as people would hope, especially in relation to law. At most, in the near to intermediate term, neuroscience may make modest contributions to legal policy and case adjudication. Nonetheless, there has been irrational exuberance about the potential contribution of neuroscience, an issue I have addressed previously and referred to as Brain Overclaim Syndrome. I first consider the law\u27s motivation and the motivation of some advocates to turn to science to solve the very hard normative problems that law addresses. Part III discusses the law\u27s psychology and its concepts of the person and responsibility. The next Part considers the general relation of neuroscience to law, which I characterize as the issue of translation. Part V canvasses various distractions that have bedeviled clear thinking about the relation of scientific, causal accounts of behavior to responsibility. The following Part examines the limits of neurolaw and Part VII considers why neurolaw does not pose a genuinely radical challenge to the law\u27s concepts of the person and responsibility. Part VIII makes a case for cautious optimism about the contribution neuroscience may make to law in the near and intermediate term. A brief conclusion follows..

    Repeat bleaching of a central Pacific coral reef over the past six decades (1960ā€“2016)

Yet in the central equatorial Pacific, some of the worldā€™s most productive reefs regularly experience extreme heat associated with El NiƱo. Here we use skeletal signatures preserved in long-lived corals on Jarvis Island to evaluate the coral community response to multiple successive heatwaves since 1960. By tracking skeletal stress band formation through the 2015-16 El Nino, which killed 95% of Jarvis corals, we validate their utility as proxies of bleaching severity and show that 2015-16 was not the first catastrophic bleaching event on Jarvis. Since 1960, eight severe (>30% bleaching) and two moderate (<30% bleaching) events occurred, each coinciding with El NiƱo. While the frequency and severity of bleaching on Jarvis did not increase over this time period, 2015ā€“16 was unprecedented in magnitude.     Adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is associated with migraine headaches

    Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is now recognized as a common disorder both in child and adult psychiatry. Adult patients with a diagnosis of ADHD (nĀ =Ā 572) and community controls (nĀ =Ā 675) responded to auto-questionnaires rating past and present symptoms of ADHD, co-morbid conditions, including migraine, treatment history and work status. The prevalence of migraine was significantly higher in the patient group compared to the controls (28.3% vs. 19.2%, PĀ <Ā 0.001, ORĀ =Ā 1.67, CI 1.28ā€“2.17). The difference from controls was particularly marked for men (22.5% vs. 10.7%, PĀ <Ā 0.001, ORĀ =Ā 2.43, CI 1.51ā€“3.90) but was also significant for women (34.4% vs. 24.9%, PĀ =Ā 0.008, ORĀ =Ā 1.58, CI 1.13ā€“2.21). In both patients and controls, migraine was associated with symptoms of mood and anxiety disorders. These findings point to a co-morbidity of migraine with ADHD, and it is possible that these patients represent a clinical and biological subgroup of adult patients with ADHD

    The effects of the neurotoxin DSP4 on spatial learning and memory in Wistar rats

    The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of DSP4-induced noradrenaline depletion on learning and memory in a spatial memory paradigm (holeboard). Since Harro et al. Brain Res 976:209ā€“216 (2003) have demonstrated that short-term effects of DSP4 administration include both noradrenaline depletion and changes in dopamine and its metabolitesā€”with the latter vanishing within 4Ā weeks after the neurotoxic lesionā€”the behavioural effects observed immediately after DSP4 administration cannot solely be related to noradrenaline. In the present study, spatial learning, reference memory and working memory were therefore assessed 5ā€“10Ā weeks after DSP4 administration. Our results suggest that the administration of DSP4 did not lead to changes in spatial learning and memory when behavioural assessment was performed after a minimum of 5Ā weeks following DSP4. This lack of changes in spatial behaviour suggests that the role of noradrenaline regarding these functions may be limited. Future studies will therefore have to take into account the time-course of neurotransmitter alterations and behavioural changes following DSP4 administration
