Measurement of the B0-anti-B0-Oscillation Frequency with Inclusive Dilepton Events
The - oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of
23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II
asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B
mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the
flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference
distributions for opposite- and same-sign dilepton events gives ps.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Physical Review Letter
Improved Limits on decays to invisible final states
We establish improved upper limits on branching fractions for B0 decays to
final States 10 where the decay products are purely invisible (i.e., no
observable final state particles) and for final states where the only visible
product is a photon. Within the Standard Model, these decays have branching
fractions that are below the current experimental sensitivity, but various
models of physics beyond the Standard Model predict significant contributions
for these channels. Using 471 million BB pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance
by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II e+e- storage ring at the SLAC National
Accelerator Laboratory, we establish upper limits at the 90% confidence level
of 2.4x10^-5 for the branching fraction of B0-->Invisible and 1.7x10^-5 for the

Study of star formation in NGC 1084
We present UBVRI broad band, H narrow band photometry of the star
forming complexes in the infra-red bright galaxy NGC 1084. Results of medium
resolution spectroscopy of some of the brighter complexes are also discussed.
Spectroscopic data is used to better estimate the internal reddening within the
galaxy which is found to be highly variable and to calculate metallicity which
is close to the solar value. Diagnostic diagram identifies the shocked regions
within this galaxy. The narrow band H flux and its equivalent width are
used to determine the star formation rates of the complexes and the
distribution of ages. Star formation rates for a few of the complexes are found
to be as high as 0.5 /year. The star forming complexes lie in the
age range 3 Myr to 6.5 Myr. U-B vs V-I colour-colour mixed population model
created using the Starburst99 model colours is used to estimate the ages of the
stellar populations present within these regions. Using this technique, it is
found that the star formation in NGC 1084 has taken place in a series of short
bursts over the last 40 Myr or so. It is proposed that the likely trigger for

Electric Fields of an H-Plane Tapered Iris
Microwave electric fields of an X -band H -plane tapered iris are calculated and plotted using the moment method for the first time. The moment method results are compared with previously obtained experimental measurements and numerical results based on an equivalent circuit approach, giving confirmation that the tapered iris is both a reciprocal and asymmetrical network. The moment method results now reveal that the asymmetry stems from the asymmetry in the phase of the input and output voltage reflection coefficients, their magnitudes being equal
An Atlas of H-alpha and R Images and Radial Profiles of 29 Bright Isolated Spiral Galaxies
Narrow-band H-alpha+[NII] and broadband R images and surface photometry are
presented for a sample of 29 bright (M_B < -18) isolated S0-Scd galaxies within
a distance of 48 Mpc. These galaxies are among the most isolated nearby spiral
galaxies of their Hubble classifications as determined from the Nearby Galaxies

Evidence for clonal selection of gamma/delta T cells in response to a human pathogen.
T cells bearing gamma/delta antigen receptors comprise a resident population of intraepithelial lymphocytes in organs such as skin, gut, and lungs, where they are strategically located to contribute to the initial defense against infection. An important unsolved question about antigen-driven gamma/delta T cell responses regards the breadth of their T cell receptor (TCR) repertoire, since many specific epithelial compartments in mice display limited diversity. We have examined the diversity of TCR delta gene expression among human gamma/delta T cells from skin lesions induced by intradermal challenge with Mycobacterium leprae. We show that the vast majority of gamma/delta cells from M. leprae lesions use either V delta 1-J delta 1 or V delta 2-J delta 1 gene rearrangements and, within a given region of the lesion, display limited junctional diversity. This contrasts markedly with the extensive diversity of gamma/delta T cells from peripheral blood of these same individuals, as well as skin from normal donors. These results indicate that the gamma/delta response to M. leprae involves the selection of a limited number of clones from among a diverse repertoire, probably in response to specific mycobacterial and/or host antigens
