    Chronology of dune development in the White River Badlands, northern Great Plains, USA

    Aeolian dune field chronologies provide important information on drought history on the Great Plains. The White River Badlands (WRB) dunes are located approximately 60 km north of the Nebraska Sand Hills (NSH), in the western section of the northern Great Plains. Clifftop dunes, sand sheets, and stabilized northwest-southeast trending parabolic dunes are found on upland mesas and buttes, locally called tables. The result of this study is a dune stabilization history determined from samples collected from stratigraphic exposures and dune crests. Thirty-seven OSL ages, from this and previous investigations, show three periods of dune activity: 1) ~21,000 years ago to 12,000 years ago (a), 2) ~9 to 6 ka, and 3) post-700 a. Stratigraphic exposures and low-relief dune forms preserve evidence of late Pleistocene and middle Holocene dune development, while high-relief dune crests preserve evidence of late Holocene dune development. Results of 12 OSL ages from the most recent dune activation event indicate that Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) droughts and Little Ice Age (LIA) droughts caused dune reactivation on the tables. Dune reactivation was accompanied by other drought-driven geomorphological responses in the WRB, including fluvial incision of the prairie and formation of sod tables. Regional significance of the MCA and LIA droughts is supported by similarities in the aeolian chronologies of the NSH at 700–600 a and some western Great Plains dune fields at 420–210 a.     Paleomagnetic Results from Luzon and the Central Philippines

    Samples were collected from 86 paleomagnetic sites from the islands of Luzon, Marinduque, Mindoro, Panay, Negros, Cebu, and Mindanao in the Philippine Arc. The sampling sites range in age from Pleistocene to Jurassic. Characteristic directions of magnetization of the samples were determined by the use of vector plots. Curie temperature determinations, thin section studies, and hysteresis studies showed that remanence of these samples is carried by fine-grained (pseudo-single domain) magnetite. Positive fold tests from Miocene data from Panay, Jurassic data from Mindoro, and Cretaceous data from Cebu suggest that the magnetization of these regions was acquired prior to folding. Rotations reported below are measured with respect to the axial goecentric dipole field. The Plio-Pleistocene data set shows no resolvable rotation for the 22 sites. This data set suggests that the various terranes that make up the Philippine Arc have behaved as a single unit during the past 5 m.y. or that deformation has been below the limits of resolution. The inclination data from the Plio-Pleistocene sites have anomalously shallow inclination and are consistent with other Plio-Pleistocene data from Vietnam, Taiwan, and the Marianas. These data support earlier suggestions for a late Neogene offset dipole effect. The late Miocene sites fall into two separate groups. Ten sites from western Luzon show evidence for around 20° of clockwise rotation. In contrast to this, late Miocene samples from the Bicol region, Negros, Marinduque, and Mindanao are not rotated. The cause of the postlate Miocene clockwise rotation of Luzon is unknown, but a Pliocene collision of the North Luzon Arc with Taiwan is suggested. Early Neogene results also separate into two different populations. The population from Marinduque shows evidence for a large counterclockwise rotation. The second early Neogene population comes from Panay, Cebu, and Mindanao and clearly shows evidence for a clockwise rotation. The validity of this rotation is further supported by a fold test and a reversal test. These early Neogene data sets are consistent with a middle to late Miocene collision of the Palawan Continental Terrane and the Central Philippine Arc. Data from six dikes of possible Oligocene age from the Zambales Ophiolite are highly discordant from the present field, being rotated approximately 60° clockwise. The directions from these dikes are similar to a direction reported earlier from late Oligocene sediments also from the Zambales region. These two data sets support the interpretation that the Eocene direction from Zambales is recording a large clockwise rotation of the region. Data from the Mesozoic sites are from two regions. Data from the Cretaceous Pandan formation of Cebu are discordant with data from the Upper Jurassic from Mindoro. The presence of a fold test from each region and a reversal test from Mindoro supports the interpretation that each of these data sets is reliable. The VGP of Mindoro is displaced southward from the Late Jurassic VGP of South China, suggesting a post-Jurassic southward migration of Mindoro

    Exploring links between greenspace and sudden unexpected death: A spatial analysis

    Greenspace has been increasingly recognized as having numerous health benefits. However, its effects are unknown concerning sudden unexpected death (SUD), commonly referred to as sudden cardiac death, which constitutes a large proportion of mortality in the United States. Because greenspace can promote physical activity, reduce stress and buffer air pollutants, it may have beneficial effects for people at risk of SUD, such as those with heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus. Using several spatial techniques, this study explored the relationship between SUD and greenspace. We adjudicated 396 SUD cases that occurred from March 2013 to February 2015 among reports from emergency medical services (EMS) that attended out-of-hospital deaths in Wake County (central North Carolina, USA). We measured multiple greenspace metrics in each census tract, including the percentages of forest, grassland, average tree canopy, tree canopy diversity, near-road tree canopy and greenway density. The associations between SUD incidence and these greenspace metrics were examined using Poisson regression (non-spatial) and Bayesian spatial models. The results from both models indicated that SUD incidence was inversely associated with both greenway density (adjusted risk ratio [RR] = 0.82, 95% credible/ confidence interval [CI]: 0.69–0.97) and the percentage of forest (adjusted RR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.81–0.99). These results suggest that increases in greenway density by 1 km/km2 and in forest by 10% were associated with a decrease in SUD risk of 18% and 10%, respectively. The inverse relationship was not observed between SUD incidence and other metrics, including grassland, average tree canopy, near-road tree canopy and tree canopy diversity. This study implies that greenspace, specifically greenways and forest, may have beneficial effects for people at risk of SUD. Further studies are needed to investigate potential causal relationships between greenspace and SUD, and potential mechanisms such as promoting physical activity and reducing stress

    Effects of Once-Weekly Exenatide on Cardiovascular Outcomes in Type 2 Diabetes.

    Abstract BACKGROUND: The cardiovascular effects of adding once-weekly treatment with exenatide to usual care in patients with type 2 diabetes are unknown. METHODS: We randomly assigned patients with type 2 diabetes, with or without previous cardiovascular disease, to receive subcutaneous injections of extended-release exenatide at a dose of 2 mg or matching placebo once weekly. The primary composite outcome was the first occurrence of death from cardiovascular causes, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke. The coprimary hypotheses were that exenatide, administered once weekly, would be noninferior to placebo with respect to safety and superior to placebo with respect to efficacy. RESULTS: In all, 14,752 patients (of whom 10,782 [73.1%] had previous cardiovascular disease) were followed for a median of 3.2 years (interquartile range, 2.2 to 4.4). A primary composite outcome event occurred in 839 of 7356 patients (11.4%; 3.7 events per 100 person-years) in the exenatide group and in 905 of 7396 patients (12.2%; 4.0 events per 100 person-years) in the placebo group (hazard ratio, 0.91; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.83 to 1.00), with the intention-to-treat analysis indicating that exenatide, administered once weekly, was noninferior to placebo with respect to safety (P<0.001 for noninferiority) but was not superior to placebo with respect to efficacy (P=0.06 for superiority). The rates of death from cardiovascular causes, fatal or nonfatal myocardial infarction, fatal or nonfatal stroke, hospitalization for heart failure, and hospitalization for acute coronary syndrome, and the incidence of acute pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, medullary thyroid carcinoma, and serious adverse events did not differ significantly between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with type 2 diabetes with or without previous cardiovascular disease, the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events did not differ significantly between patients who received exenatide and those who received placebo.     Active Learning Strategies in a Nontraditional Teacher Education Program

    Union Institute & University uses a guided-independent study pedagogy, developed in the 1960s, for all courses offered in the undergraduate programs. We have found, however, that this approach is not well suited for science learning. Our students achieved better results when we adopted a hybrid approach, combining a limited number of face-to-face meetings with the independent learning strategy. Our target audience is primarily our elementary education majors who plan to teach in the urban school districts of Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Inquiry-based learning strategies are integral to our hybrid approach. The author reports on the application of a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) strategy for introducing a unit on hurricanes. This PBL exercise is part of a series of inquiry-based, hands-on modules developed for our elementary education majors. The PBL strategy encourages collaboration, peer teaching, and elements of inquiry difficult to facilitate in a pure distance learning model. In addition, the author reports on the results of an independent senior project in which the student, a police captain with the Sunny Isles Police Department implemented a project for achieving Storm Ready certification for the city. The City of Sunny Isles is located on a barrier island north of Miami Beach, Florida. Like other barrier islands communities in South Florida, this one is densely developed and susceptible to flooding and wind damage in high intensity tropical storms. Storm Ready is a certification offered by the National Weather Service designed to help municipalities integrate emergency warning systems, weather information, and community outreach to improve community preparation and response to weather-related emergencies. While in this case, Storm Ready certification of the City of Sunny Isles required a long-term commitment of a single student, we believe that a Storm Ready project could be adapted for groups of high school or college students. PBL or Project-Based strategies could be used to accomplish the project in stages, with the cooperation of local city officials and first responders. Students learn about emergency response, weather prediction, remote- and direct sensing of weather conditions, and geographic information systems

    Inquiry-Based Strategies for Teaching Earth Science In a Nontraditional Teacher Education Program

    he author reports on the final evaluation of a curriculum revision project to update and revise materials and pedagogical approach for an online introductory earth science course. Union Institute & University uses guided-independent study pedagogy, developed in the 1960s, for all courses offered in their undergraduate programs. We have found, however, that our independent learning model is not an effective learning strategy for most of our students. Instead, our students achieve better results with a hybrid approach combining face-to-face meetings with the low-residency model, supported by an online course platform. Our target audience is primarily elementary education majors who plan to teach in the urban school districts of Florida\u27s Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Plans for revisioning this course centered on adaptation of course materials developed by faculty at San Francisco State University and adoption of a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) strategy for all learning activities. During adaptation, content experts worked collaboratively with students and education faculty to ensure that lessons were relevant and standards-based. To ensure that course design was consistent with best practices in online education, content experts worked with instructional technology (IT) staff in the design and testing phase. Course activities were strengthened with new software, presentation equipment, and field experiences. Faculty and IT staff attended professional development workshops at the Institute for Transforming Undergraduate Education at the University of Delaware, a recognized leader in PBL and other inquiry-based learning strategies.
