    Age-associated changes on axonal regeneration and functional outcome after spinal cord injury in rats

    This study was conducted to evaluate the association between aging and regenerative potential of spinal cord injury. Three groups of male Sprague�Dawley rats, including young (40 days), mature (5-6 months) and old (28-29 months) were spinally hemisected at the L1 level. The locomotor performance was assessed weekly for eight weeks after lesion using locomotors� rating scale developed by Basso, Bresnahan and Beattie (BBB). In the tracing study, retrograde labeled neuron was counted in the lateral vestibular nucleus for axonal regeneration. From 4-8 weeks, the functional recovery of the young and mature age rats was significantly increased in comparison to the old age group. At 8 weeks, young and mature animals achieved a plateau score of (mean ± SD), 17 ± 1.47 and 16.8 ± 0.70 respectively, and the old rats reached an average score of 13.8±1.63 (P<0.05). The mean number of labeled neurons in the vestibular nucleus in the young group (mean ± SD): 32.05 ± 1.03 increase significantly compared to the older age group 5.01 ± 1.31 (P<0.05). Current findings suggest that axonal repair and functional improvement decrease in aged animals after partial spinal cord injury. Thus, the aging process may affect the regenerative capacity of the injured central nervous system, and axonal regeneration is age dependent. © 2015 Tehran University of Medical Sciences.     A comparative study on the results of agonist and antagonist protocols based on serum AMH levels in patients undergoing intracytoplasmic sperm injection

    Background: Serum concentrations of antimullerian hormone (AMH) correlate with ovarian response during assisted reproduction treatment (ART) cycles. Objective: This retrospective study attempted to evaluate the selection of ovarian stimulation protocols based on serum AMH levels in patients and its impact on the results of ART. Materials and Methods: Based on AMH levels, the patients with tubal factor infertility were divided in three groups of normal, low and high AMH levels. Oocyte, good embryo number and pregnancy rate in each group were analyzed. Results: Using agonist and antagonist protocols, an increase in serum AMH led to higher number of oocytes and better quality embryos. At all low, normal and high AMH levels, the agonist protocol led to a more significant increase in the number of oocytes than the antagonist protocol (p<0.05). The number of high quality embryos significantly increased by the agonist protocol than antagonist protocol in women with normal AMH levels of 1.3-2.6 ng/ml (p=0.00). Moreover, the results for the number of high quality embryos at AMH �2.6 ng/ml was in favor of the antagonist protocol (p=0.00). The results showed the lowest pregnancy rate at AMH �1.3 ng/ml. At AMH �2.6 ng/ml, there was a significant increase in pregnancy rate through the antagonist protocol (p=0.04). Conclusion: Findings of this study suggested that the ART results are predictable, taking into account the AMH levels. The protocol specific to each patient can be used given the AMH level in each individual.     Di-(2-ethylhexyl) Phthalate-Induced Hippocampus-Derived Neural Stem Cells Proliferation

    The brain and spinal cord have a limited capacity for self-repair under damaged conditions. One of the best options to overcome these limitations involves the use of phytochemicals as potential therapeutic agents. In this study, we have aimed to investigate the effects of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) on hippocampus-derived neural stem cells (NSCs) proliferation to search phytochemical candidates for possible treatment of neurological diseases using endogenous capacity. In this experimental study, neonatal rat hippocampus-derived NSCs were cultured and treated with various concentrations of DEHP (0, 100, 200, 400 and 600 mu M) and Cirsium vulgare (C. vulgare) hydroethanolic extract (0, 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 mu g/ml) for 48 hours under in vitro conditions. Cell proliferation rates and quantitative Sox2 gene expression were evaluated using MTT assay and real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). We observed the highest average growth rate in the 400 mu M DEHP and 800 mu g/ml C. vulgare extract treated groups. Sox2 expression in the DEHP-treated NSCs significantly increased compared to the control group. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) results demonstrated that the active ingredients that naturally occurred in the C. vulgare hydroethanolic extract were 2-ethyl-1-hexanamine, n-heptacosane, 1-cyclopentane-carboxylic acid, 1-heptadecanamine, 2,6-octadien-1-ol, 2,6,10,14,18,22-tetracosahexaene, and DEHP. DEHP profoundly stimulated NSCs proliferation through Sox2 gene overexpression. These results provide and opportunity for further use of the C. vulgure phytochemicals for prevention and/or treatment of neurological diseases via phytochemical mediated-proliferation of endogenous adult NSCs

    Anxiety as a consequence of modern dietary pattern in adults in Tehran-Iran

    Food intake patterns in relation to mental health have already been revealed. To investigate the relationship between processed food consumption behavior and anxiety disorder, a cross sectional study was conducted. Overall, 1782 young adults aged 18-35 years were randomly selected using cluster sampling method from 22 districts of Tehran Iran in 2011. Diet assessment was done using a 24 hour recall questionnaire in two times with a week interval. Anxiety level was determined using the validated Speilburger test (Persian version). A proportional odds regression model was used to assess the effect of processed food consumption on anxiety variables. A significant statistical difference was found between men and women in terms of processed food consumption (p<0.001). Adjusting for age, total calorie intake, gender, body mass index, socioeconomic status, and history of sedative drug consumption as well as mental health disorders, the proportional odds regression model showed a significant relationship between increased consumption of processed foods and anxiety (OR = 4.73, 95 CI: 2.89-12.54 for state and OR = 4.91, 95 CI: 2.88-13.99 for trait). Identification, modification and adjusting incorrect food patterns in the community could be considered as valuable steps to turn down nutritional-based health difficulties. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd.     Accelerated Ripening of Kabkab Dates Using Sodium Chloride and Acetic Acid Solutions

    ABSTRACT-In this research, the accelerated ripening of the Kabkab dates from Khalal to Tamr using NaCl and acetic acid solutions was studied. Fruits at Khalal stage were harvested and washed with distilled water before being treated with ripening inducers: 1. NaCl solutions, 2. acetic acid solutions and 3. Aqueous solution of NaCl (1%) and acetic acid. moisture, pH, colour, brix and textural firmness of the samples were monitored. Results indicated that during ripening the moisture content and colour changed significantly. The major change was observed for firmness where a maximum force for puncture test varied from about 1000 to 50 g force for all samples after 72 hours of incubation at 40 °C. Harvesting at Khalal stage followed by treating the fruits with NaCl and/or acetic acid solutions and an incubation stage at 40 °C showed to be a promising method for accelerated ripening

    Feeding and growth efficiency indices of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) during different deprivation and re-feeding periods

    This study aimed to have more insight into the effects of different feed deprivation periods on the growth and feed utilization indices of fish. The study lasted for eight weeks. Four treatments with three replicates including a control group without feed deprivation and treatment 1, 2 and 3 with 1, 2 and 3 week(s) of feed deprivation, respectively, were set up. Fish were fed ad lib for five weeks from week four up to the end of week eight, twice daily. The initial weight was (44.01g ±0.19 c S.E.M). At the end of the deprivation period (day 21 of experiment) starved fish including treatments 1 (46.90g ±2.74), 2 (46.04g ±1.21) and 3 (41.04g ±0.22) had significantly lower weights (P0.05). Different body compartments (crude protein, fat and energy) were not significantly differed among the treatments at the end of the starvation period (P>0.05). Results indicated that the fish could tolerate the starvation and could finally compensate for the final body weight

    Models of multivariate regression for labor accidents in different production sectors: comparative study

    The present article shows the results of an investigation carried out on the use of alternatives to carry out work accident studies in an objective manner in three production sectors that are of high risk: the electric power production sector, cement production and oil refining sector, so the main objective is focused on identifying the influential variables and the regression model that best explains the accident in each of these sectors and perform a comparative analysis between them. Among the techniques and tools used (data mining) are those related to multivariate statistics and generalized linear models and through the Akaike information criterion and Bayeciano criterion, it was possible to determine that the best regression model that explains the accident rate in two of the sectors studied is the negative binomial (cement and petroleum refining), while in the electric power sector, the best fit model resulted in Logistic Regression. In turn, for the three sectors in general, the variables that have the most significant impact are related to aspects such as: management commitment, occupational safety climate, safety training, psychosocial aspects and ergonomic sources, this result was corroborated by means of an accident analysis carried out in these three sectors

    Cyperus spp.: A Review on Phytochemical Composition, Biological Activity, and Health-Promoting Effects

    Cyperaceae are a plant family of grass-like monocots, comprising 5600 species with a cosmopolitan distribution in temperate and tropical regions. Phytochemically, Cyperus is one of the most promising health supplementing genera of the Cyperaceae family, housing ˜950 species, with Cyperus rotundus L. being the most reported species in pharmacological studies. The traditional uses of Cyperus spp. have been reported against various diseases, viz., gastrointestinal and respiratory affections, blood disorders, menstrual irregularities, and inflammatory diseases. Cyperus spp. are known to contain a plethora of bioactive compounds such as a-cyperone, a-corymbolol, a-pinene, caryophyllene oxide, cyperotundone, germacrene D, mustakone, and zierone, which impart pharmacological properties to its extract. Therefore, Cyperus sp. extracts were preclinically studied and reported to possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, neuroprotective, antidepressive, antiarthritic, antiobesity, vasodilator, spasmolytic, bronchodilator, and estrogenic biofunctionalities. Nonetheless, conclusive evidence is still sparse regarding its clinical applications on human diseases. Further studies focused on toxicity data and risk assessment are needed to elucidate its safe and effective application.     Multifunctional, self-assembling, anionic peptide-lipid nanocomplexes for targeted siRNA delivery

    Formulations of cationic liposomes and polymers readily self-assemble by electrostatic interactions with siRNA to form cationic nanoparticles which achieve efficient transfection and silencing in vitro. However, the utility of cationic formulations in vivo is limited due to rapid clearance from the circulation, due to their association with serum proteins, as well as systemic and cellular toxicity. These problems may be overcome with anionic formulations but they provide challenges of self-assembly and transfection efficiency. We have developed anionic, siRNA nanocomplexes utilizing anionic PEGylated liposomes and cationic targeting peptides that overcome these problems. Biophysical measurements indicated that at optimal ratios of components, anionic PEGylated nanocomplexes formed spherical particles and that, unlike cationic nanocomplexes, were resistant to aggregation in the presence of serum, and achieved significant gene silencing although their non-PEGylated anionic counterparts were less efficient. We have evaluated the utility of anionic nanoparticles for the treatment of neuronal diseases by administration to rat brains of siRNA to BACE1, a key enzyme involved in the formation of amyloid plaques. Silencing of BACE1 was achieved in vivo following a single injection of anionic nanoparticles by convection enhanced delivery and specificity of RNA interference verified by 5' RACE-PCR and Western blot analysis of protein
