    An RNA foldability metric; implications for the design of rapidly foldable RNA sequences

    Evidence is presented suggesting, for the first time, that the protein foldability metric sigma=(T_theta - T_f)/T_theta, where T_theta and T_f are, respectively, the collapse and folding transition temperatures, could be used also to measure the foldability of RNA sequences.     Cognitive impairment and decline in cognitively normal older adults with high amyloid-ÎČ: A meta-analysis

    AbstractIntroductionThis meta-analysis aimed to characterize the nature and magnitude of amyloid (AÎČ)-related cognitive impairment and decline in cognitively normal (CN) older individuals.MethodMEDLINE Ovid was searched from 2012 to June 2016 for studies reporting relationships between cerebrospinal fluid or positron emission tomography (PET) AÎČ levels and cognitive impairment (cross-sectional) and decline (longitudinal) in CN older adults. Neuropsychological data were classified into domains of episodic memory, executive function, working memory, processing speed, visuospatial function, semantic memory, and global cognition. Type of AÎČ measure, how AÎČ burden was analyzed, inclusion of control variables, and clinical criteria used to exclude participants, were considered as moderators. Random-effects models were used for analyses with effect sizes expressed as Cohen's d.ResultsA total of 38 studies met inclusion criteria contributing 30 cross-sectional (N = 5005) and 14 longitudinal (N = 2584) samples. AÎČ-related cognitive impairment was observed for global cognition (d = 0.32), visuospatial function (d = 0.25), processing speed (d = 0.18), episodic memory, and executive function (both d's = 0.15), with decline observed for global cognition (d = 0.30), semantic memory (d = 0.28), visuospatial function (d = 0.25), and episodic memory (d = 0.24). AÎČ-related impairment was moderated by age, amyloid measure, type of analysis, and inclusion of control variables and decline moderated by amyloid measure, type of analysis, inclusion of control variables, and exclusion criteria used.DiscussionCN older adults with high AÎČ show a small general cognitive impairment and small to moderate decline in episodic memory, visuospatial function, semantic memory, and global cognition

    A Lumped Parameter Model to Study Atrioventricular Valve Regurgitation in Stage 1 and Changes Across Stage 2 Surgery in Single Ventricle Patients

    Goal: This manuscript evaluates atrioventricular valve regurgitation (AVVR) in babies born with an already very challenging heart condition, i.e. with single ventricle physiology. Although the second surgery that single ventricle patients undergo is thought to decrease AVVR, there is much controversy in the clinical literature about AVVR treatment. Methods: The effect of atrioventricular valve regurgitation (AVVR) on Stage 1 haemodynamics and resulting acute changes from conversion to Stage 2 circulation in single ventricle patients are analysed through lumped parameter models. Several degrees of AVVR severity are analysed, for two types of valve regurgitation: incomplete leaflet closure and valve prolapse. Results: The models show that increasing AVVR in Stage 1 induces the following effects: i) higher stroke volume and associated decrease in ventricular end-systolic volume; ii) increase in atrial volumes with V-loop enlargement in pressure-volume curves; iii) pulmonary venous hypertension. The Stage 2 surgery results in volume unloading of the ventricle thereby driving a decrease in AVVR. However, this effect is offset by an increase in ventricular pressures resulting in a net increase in regurgitation fraction (RF) of approximately 0.1 (for example, in severe AVVR, the pre-operative RF increases from ~60% to ~70% post-operatively). Moreover, despite some improvements to sarcomere function early after Stage 2 surgery, it may deteriorate in cases of severe AVVR. Conclusion: In patients with moderate to severe AVVR, restoration of atrioventricular valve competence prior to, or at the time of, Stage 2 surgery would likely lead to improved haemodynamics and clinical outcome as the models suggest that uncorrected AVVR can worsen across Stage 2 surgery.     Study of a zirconium getter for purification of xenon gas

    Oxygen, nitrogen and methane purification efficiencies for a common zirconium getter are measured in 1050 Torr of xenon gas. Starting with impurity concentrations near 10^{-6} g/g, the outlet impurity level is found to be less than 120*10^{-12} g/g for O2 and less than 950*10^{-12} g/g for N2. For methane we find residual contamination of the purified gas at concentrations varying over three orders of magnitude, depending on the purifier temperature and the gas flow rate. A slight reduction in the purifier's methane efficiency is observed after 13 mg of this impurity has been absorbed, which we attribute to partial exhaustion of the purifier's capacity for this species. We also find that the purifier's ability to absorb N2 and methane can be extinguished long before any decrease in O2 performance is observed, and slower flow rates should be employed for xenon purification due to the cooling effect that the heavy gas has on the getter.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure

    Microtab dynamic modelling for wind turbine blade load rejection

    A dynamic model characterising the effect of microtab deployment on the aerodynamics of its base aerofoil is presented. The developed model predicts the transient aerodynamic coefficients consistent with the experimental and computational data reported in the literature. The proposed model is then used to carry out investigation on the effectiveness of microtabs in load alleviation and lifespan increase of wind turbine blades. Simulating a bang–bang controller, different load rejection scenarios are examined and their effect on blade lifespan is investigated. Results indicate that the range of frequencies targeted for rejection can significantly impact the blade fatigue life. Case studies are carried out to compare the predicted load alleviation amount and the blade lifespan using the developed model with those obtained by other researchers using the steady state model. It is shown that the assumption of an instantaneous aerodynamic response as used in the steady state model can lead to inaccurate results

    Characterisation of strain-induced precipitation behaviour in microalloyed steels during thermomechanical controlled processing

    The temperature at which thermomechanical controlled processing is undertaken strongly influences strain-induced precipitation (SIP) in microalloyed steels. In this study, the recrystallisation-precipitation-time-temperature curve was simulated to determine the full recrystallisation temperature, recrystallisation-stop temperature and the temperature where precipitation would occur at the shortest time. The calculated temperatures were verified by experimental testing for rolling between 1100 °C and 850 °C. On the basis of this a finishing deformation of 850 °C was chosen in order to maximise the precipitate number density formed in a fully unrecrystallised austenite. The orientation relationship between the SIP in austenite, and subsequent transformation to ferrite was identified by calculation from the coordinate transformation matrix, and by electron diffraction in the transmission electron microscope. The NbC formed as coherent/semi-coherent precipitates in the austenite, and remained coherent/semi-coherent in the ferrite, indicating a Kurdjumov-Sachs orientation relationship between the austenite and ferrite on transformation

Copyright @ 2010 Elsevier B.V.The manuscript reports on a study aimed at analyzing a series of relational variables derived from the Western industrial buyer–seller relationship and Chinese guanxi literature. The findings based on data collected from over 200 Taiwanese trading firms reveal that buyer's perceptions of organizational trust, communication, cooperation, social bonding and the saving of face are higher in Anglo-Chinese relationships that venture beyond the short-term. It is also found that cooperation, social bonding and performance are greater in those b2b relationships surveyed that are relatively more mature than in emerging states. The findings also reveal that relationship duration and stage have a significant moderating effect on various Inter-organizational and Interpersonal–Outcome relationships. Several managerial implications are extracted to help Western firms better manage their international relations, as well as help new exporting firms penetrate such well-established guanxi networks
