Geometric Phase, Curvature, and Extrapotentials in Constrained Quantum Systems
We derive an effective Hamiltonian for a quantum system constrained to a
submanifold (the constraint manifold) of configuration space (the ambient
space) by an infinite restoring force. We pay special attention to how this
Hamiltonian depends on quantities which are external to the constraint
manifold, such as the external curvature of the constraint manifold, the
(Riemannian) curvature of the ambient space, and the constraining potential. In
particular, we find the remarkable fact that the twisting of the constraining
potential appears as a gauge potential in the constrained Hamiltonian. This
gauge potential is an example of geometric phase, closely related to that
originally discussed by Berry. The constrained Hamiltonian also contains an
effective potential depending on the external curvature of the constraint
manifold, the curvature of the ambient space, and the twisting of the
constraining potential. The general nature of our analysis allows applications
to a wide variety of problems, such as rigid molecules, the evolution of
molecular systems along reaction paths, and quantum strip waveguides.Comment: 27 pages with 1 figure, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Deformations of quantum field theories on spacetimes with Killing vector fields
The recent construction and analysis of deformations of quantum field
theories by warped convolutions is extended to a class of curved spacetimes.
These spacetimes carry a family of wedge-like regions which share the essential
causal properties of the Poincare transforms of the Rindler wedge in Minkowski
space. In the setting of deformed quantum field theories, they play the role of
typical localization regions of quantum fields and observables. As a concrete
example of such a procedure, the deformation of the free Dirac field is
studied.Comment: 35 pages, 3 figure
A Quantum-mechanical Approach for Constrained Macromolecular Chains
Many approaches to three-dimensional constrained macromolecular chains at
thermal equilibrium, at about room temperatures, are based upon constrained
Classical Hamiltonian Dynamics (cCHDa). Quantum-mechanical approaches (QMa)
have also been treated by different researchers for decades. QMa address a
fundamental issue (constraints versus the uncertainty principle) and are
versatile: they also yield classical descriptions (which may not coincide with
those from cCHDa, although they may agree for certain relevant quantities).
Open issues include whether QMa have enough practical consequences which differ
from and/or improve those from cCHDa. We shall treat cCHDa briefly and deal
with QMa, by outlining old approaches and focusing on recent ones.Comment: Expands review published in The European Physical Journal (Special

Evidence of Color Coherence Effects in W+jets Events from ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV
We report the results of a study of color coherence effects in ppbar
collisions based on data collected by the D0 detector during the 1994-1995 run
of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, at a center of mass energy sqrt(s) = 1.8
TeV. Initial-to-final state color interference effects are studied by examining
particle distribution patterns in events with a W boson and at least one jet.
The data are compared to Monte Carlo simulations with different color coherence
implementations and to an analytic modified-leading-logarithm perturbative
calculation based on the local parton-hadron duality hypothesis.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures. Submitted to Physics Letters
Measurement of the p-pbar -> Wgamma + X cross section at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV and WWgamma anomalous coupling limits
The WWgamma triple gauge boson coupling parameters are studied using p-pbar
-> l nu gamma + X (l = e,mu) events at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The data were
collected with the DO detector from an integrated luminosity of 162 pb^{-1}
delivered by the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The cross section times branching
fraction for p-pbar -> W(gamma) + X -> l nu gamma + X with E_T^{gamma} > 8 GeV
and Delta R_{l gamma} > 0.7 is 14.8 +/- 1.6 (stat) +/- 1.0 (syst) +/- 1.0 (lum)
pb. The one-dimensional 95% confidence level limits on anomalous couplings are
-0.88 < Delta kappa_{gamma} < 0.96 and -0.20 < lambda_{gamma} < 0.20.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. D Rapid Communication
Measurement of the ttbar Production Cross Section in ppbar Collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using Kinematic Characteristics of Lepton + Jets Events
We present a measurement of the top quark pair ttbar production cross section
in ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV using 230 pb**{-1}
of data collected by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We
select events with one charged lepton (electron or muon), large missing
transverse energy, and at least four jets, and extract the ttbar content of the
sample based on the kinematic characteristics of the events. For a top quark
mass of 175 GeV, we measure sigma(ttbar) = 6.7 {+1.4-1.3} (stat) {+1.6- 1.1}
(syst) +/-0.4 (lumi) pb, in good agreement with the standard model prediction.Comment: submitted to Phys.Rev.Let
Measurement of the ttbar Production Cross Section in ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV using Lepton + Jets Events with Lifetime b-tagging
We present a measurement of the top quark pair () production cross
section () in collisions at TeV
using 230 pb of data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab
Tevatron Collider. We select events with one charged lepton (electron or muon),
missing transverse energy, and jets in the final state. We employ
lifetime-based b-jet identification techniques to further enhance the
purity of the selected sample. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV, we
measure pb, in
agreement with the standard model expectation.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables Submitted to Phys.Rev.Let
Measurement of the Isolated Photon Cross Section in p-pbar Collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
The cross section for the inclusive production of isolated photons has been
measured in p anti-p collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV with the D0 detector at the
Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The photons span transverse momenta 23 to 300 GeV
and have pseudorapidity |eta|<0.9. The cross section is compared with the
results from two next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The
theoretical predictions agree with the measurement within uncertainties.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys.Lett.
Managing Learner’s Affective States in Intelligent Tutoring Systems
Abstract. Recent works in Computer Science, Neurosciences, Education, and Psychology have shown that emotions play an important role in learning. Learner’s cognitive ability depends on his emotions. We will point out the role of emotions in learning, distinguishing the different types and models of emotions which have been considered until now. We will address an important issue con-cerning the different means to detect emotions and introduce recent approaches to measure brain activity using Electroencephalograms (EEG). Knowing the influ-ence of emotional events on learning it becomes important to induce specific emo-tions so that the learner can be in a more adequate state for better learning or memorization. To this end, we will introduce the main components of an emotion-ally intelligent tutoring system able to recognize, interpret and influence learner’s emotions. We will talk about specific virtual agents that can influence learner’s emotions to motivate and encourage him and involve a more cooperative work, particularly in narrative learning environments. Pushing further this paradigm, we will present the advantages and perspectives of subliminal learning which inter
Study of J/Psi decays into eta Kstar Kstar-bar
We report the first observation of \mPJpsi \to \mPeta\mPKst\mAPKst decay in
a \mPJpsi sample of 58 million events collected with the BESII detector. The
branching fraction is determined to be . The selected signal event sample is further used to search for the
\mPY resonance through \mPJpsi \to \mPeta \mPY, \mPY\to\mPKst\mAPKst. No
evidence of a signal is seen. An upper limit of \mathrm{Br}(\mPJpsi \to \mPeta
\mPY)\cdot\mathrm{Br}(\mPY\to\mPKst\mAPKst) < 2.52\times 10^{-4} is set at the
90% confidence level.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
