    Fire frequency and landscape management in the northwestern Pyrenean piedmont, France, since the early Neolithic (8000 cal. BP)

    International audienceBoth quantitative reconstruction of fire frequency from charcoal counts and pollen analysis were undertaken on a 312 cm sediment core from Gabarn peat bog. An 8000 yr cal. BP palaeofire record and vegetation history were established on the basis of nine 14C (AMS) dates. As anthropogenic Inferred Fire Frequency (IFF) has seldom been studied, we test and discuss two different methods of frequency calculation. Our results shows a clear Holocene bipartition at c. 3500–4000 cal. BP characterized by a three times decrease in Mean Fire Interval (MFI): from 7000 to 4000 cal. BP, MFI = 530 yr; from 4000 to 400 cal. BP, MFI = 160 yr. In an Atlantic vegetation context, we hypothesize this fire regime with such episode frequency to be mainly controlled by human activities. This hypothesis is supported by comparisons with other European quantified palaeofireregimes (Swiss Alps, northern Italy) whether they are controlled by climate, man or both. Taking into account the pollen record, we interpret the Gabarn palaeofire record links with human pressure and land use. Our results suggest that the relationship between fire frequency and human pressure is not always linear.     The Fading of Symmetry Non-restoration at Finite Temperature

    The fate of symmetries at high temperature determines the dynamics of the very early universe. It is conceivable that temperature effects favor symmetry breaking instead of restoration. Concerning global symmetries, the non-linear sigma model is analyzed in detail. For spontaneously broken gauge symmetries, we propose the gauge boson magnetic mass as a ``flag'' for symmetry (non)-restoration. We consider several cases: the standard model with one and two Higgs doublets in the perturbative regime, and the case of a strongly interacting Higgs sector. The latter is done in a model independent way with the tools provided by chiral Lagrangians. Our results clearly point towards restoration, a pattern consistent with recent lattice computations for global symmetries.     Reliabilities of genomic prediction using combined reference data of the Nordic Red dairy cattle populations

    AbstractThis study investigated the possibility of increasing the reliability of direct genomic values (DGV) by combining reference populations. The data were from 3,735 bulls from Danish, Swedish, and Finnish Red dairy cattle populations. Single nucleotide polymorphism markers were fitted as random variables in a Bayesian model, using published estimated breeding values as response variables. In total, 17 index traits were analyzed. Reliabilities were estimated using a 5-fold cross validation, and calculated as the within-year squared correlation between estimated breeding values and DGV. Marker effects were estimated using reference populations from individual countries, as well as using a combined reference population from all 3 countries. Single-country reference populations gave mean reliabilities across 17 traits of 0.19 to 0.23, whereas the combined reference gave mean reliabilities of 0.26 for all populations. Using marker effects from 1 population to predict the other 2 gave a loss in mean reliability of 0.14 to 0.21 when predicting Swedish or Finnish animals with Danish marker effects, or vice versa. Using Swedish or Finnish marker effects to predict each other only showed a loss in mean reliability of 0.03 to 0.05. A combined Swedish-Finnish reference population led to an average reliability as high as that from the 3-country reference population, but somewhat different for individual traits. The results from this study show that it is possible to increase the reliability of DGV by combining reference populations from related populations

    A fused maxillary central incisor and its multidisciplinary treatment: an 18-year follow-up

    Fused teeth may cause aesthetic, spacing, periodontal, eruption, and caries problems. The present case report describes a 7-year-old boy patient with a chief complaint of unerupted maxillary incisor. Radiographic examination indicated a fused tooth which had two fused roots but two independent root canals. A complex management of a fused tooth is really difficult to standardize. In this case an orthodontic, endodontic, and surgical treatment (intentional replantation) allowed the tooth to be retained until 18 years following intervention. Maintenance of the root and alveolar bone in young adults at least until full skeletal maturation should be the main treatment objectiv

    Study of the virus vector genus Trichodorus (Diphtherophorina, Trichodoridae) from the Iberian Peninsula, an apparent centre of speciation

    Trichodoridae are polyphagous root ectoparasites occurring worldwide. Their major pest status is as virus vector of Tobraviruses. Currently, the family has 102 species classified within 6 genera. The genus Trichodorus is the largest in number of species (56) and predominantly occurs in temperate regions. Traditional morphology-based taxonomy revealed for Europe, a very high species diversity within the Iberian Peninsula, comprising about one fifth of all Trichodoridae described. Characteristic for this fauna is the presence of a morpho-species group within Trichodorus, characterized in males by slightly ventrally curved spicules with a mid-blade constriction with bristles and females with relatively large vaginal sclerotized pieces, quadrangular to triangular in shape. Recent surveys for Trichodoridae in cultivated and natural environments in Southern Spain and compared with the fauna from Portugal revealed four new species of Trichodorus, three of them belonging to this morpho-species group. Molecular analyses based on nuclear ribosomal RNA genes (D2-D3 expansion segments of 28S and partial 18S gene) supported not only the new species but also the morpho-species group as a separate clade. The integrated approach of morphology based taxonomy with molecular and biogeographic data enhanced the accuracy of the observed biodiversity and strengthen the hypothesis of the Iberian Peninsula as a center of speciation.The Society of Nematologists (SON

A comparative morphological study was carried out together with molecular analyses based on nuclear ribosomal RNA genes (D2-D3 expansion segments of 28S and partial 18S gene). Characteristic for the Iberian Peninsula is the high number of morphologically closely resembling species but clearly separated molecularly (cryptic species), characterized in males by slightly ventrally curved spicules with a mid-blade constriction with bristles and females with relatively large vaginal sclerotized pieces, quadrangular to triangular in shape. Molecular analyses demonstrated that D2-D3 expansion segments are suitable diagnostic markers for Trichodoridae. Comparative morphology and molecular analyses provide support for the Iberian Peninsula as an apparent centre of speciation.     Dynamical Symmetry Breaking in Warped Compactifications

    We study dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking in the Randall-Sundrum scenario. We show that one extra dimension is enough to give the correct pattern of electroweak symmetry breaking in a simple model with gauge bosons and the right-handed top quark in the bulk. The top quark mass is also in agreement with experiment. Furthermore, we propose an extended scenario with all Standard Model gauge bosons and fermions propagating in the bulk, which naturally accommodates the fermion mass hierarchies.     Autoencoders for Semi-Supervised Water Level Modeling in Sewer Pipes with Sparse Labeled Data

    More frequent and thorough inspection of sewer pipes has the potential to save billions in utilities. However, the amount and quality of inspection are impeded by an imprecise and highly subjective manual process. It involves technicians judging stretches of sewer based on video from remote-controlled robots. Determining the state of sewer pipes based on these videos entails a great deal of ambiguity. Furthermore, the frequency with which the different defects occur differs a lot, leading to highly imbalanced datasets. Such datasets represent a poor basis for automating the labeling process using supervised learning. With this paper we explore the potential of self-supervision as a method for reducing the need for large numbers of well-balanced labels. First, our models learn to represent the data distribution using more than a million unlabeled images, then a small number of labeled examples are used to learn a mapping from the learned representations to a relevant target variable, in this case, water level. We choose a convolutional Autoencoder, a Variational Autoencoder and a Vector-Quantised Variational Autoencoder as the basis for our experiments. The best representations are shown to be learned by the classic Autoencoder with the Multi-Layer Perceptron achieving a Mean Absolute Error of 9.93.
