Multi-objectivising Combinatorial Optimisation Problems by means of Elementary Landscape Decompositions
In the last decade, many works in combinatorial optimisation have shown that, due to the advances in multi-objective optimisation, the algorithms from this field could be used for solving single-objective problems as well. In this sense, a number of papers have proposed multi-objectivising single-objective problems in order to use multi-objective algorithms in their optimisation. In this paper, we follow up this idea by presenting a methodology for multi-objectivising combinatorial optimisation prob- lems based on elementary landscape decompositions of their objective function. Under this framework, each of the elementary landscapes obtained from the decomposition is considered as an independent objective function to optimise. In order to illustrate this general methodology, we consider four problems from different domains: the quadratic assignment problem and the linear ordering problem (permutation domain), the 0-1 unconstrained quadratic optimisation problem (binary domain), and the frequency assignment problem (integer domain). We implemented two widely known multi-objective algorithms, NSGA-II and SPEA2, and compared their perfor- mance with that of a single-objective GA. The experiments conducted on a large benchmark of instances of the four problems show that the multi-objective algorithms clearly outperform the single-objective approaches. Furthermore, a discussion on the results suggests that the multi-objective space generated by this decomposition enhances the exploration ability, thus permitting NSGA-II and SPEA2 to obtain better results in the majority of the tested instances.TIN2016-78365R

Efficient Concept Drift Handling for Batch Android Malware Detection Models
The rapidly evolving nature of Android apps poses a significant challenge to
static batch machine learning algorithms employed in malware detection systems,
as they quickly become obsolete. Despite this challenge, the existing
literature pays limited attention to addressing this issue, with many advanced
Android malware detection approaches, such as Drebin, DroidDet and MaMaDroid,
relying on static models. In this work, we show how retraining techniques are
able to maintain detector capabilities over time. Particularly, we analyze the
effect of two aspects in the efficiency and performance of the detectors: 1)
the frequency with which the models are retrained, and 2) the data used for
retraining. In the first experiment, we compare periodic retraining with a more
advanced concept drift detection method that triggers retraining only when
necessary. In the second experiment, we analyze sampling methods to reduce the
amount of data used to retrain models. Specifically, we compare fixed sized
windows of recent data and state-of-the-art active learning methods that select
those apps that help keep the training dataset small but diverse. Our
experiments show that concept drift detection and sample selection mechanisms
result in very efficient retraining strategies which can be successfully used
to maintain the performance of the static Android malware state-of-the-art
detectors in changing environments.Comment: 18 page
Drought and Freezing Vulnerability of the Isolated Hybrid Aspen \u3cem\u3ePopulus x smithii\u3c/em\u3e Relative to Its Parental Species, \u3cem\u3eP. tremuloides\u3c/em\u3e and \u3cem\u3eP. grandidentata\u3c/em\u3e
Aim
We assessed the vulnerability of an isolated, relictual Pleistocene hybrid aspen population of conservation interest (Populus x. smithii ) and the nearest populations of its parent species (Populus grandidentata and Populus tremuloides ) to springtime post‐bud break freezing and growing season drought stress. Unique genets from the hybrid Niobrara River population and from the two parental populations were propagated in a common garden from rhizome cuttings. We tracked their phenology before and after bud break and measured their vulnerability to freezing (stem electrolyte leakage and leaf chlorophyll fluorescence) and to drought (stem hydraulic conductance, leaf osmotic potential, stomatal pore index, and gas exchange). Results
Populus grandidentata was slower to leaf out, showed lower vulnerability to stem freezing and drought‐induced cavitation, but exhibited a lower capacity to tolerate drought stress through leaf resistance traits compared to P. tremuloides . Hybrids were similar to P. grandidentata in their overwintering strategy, exhibiting later bud break, and in their higher resistance to stem freezing damage, but they were more similar to P. tremuloides in their higher vulnerability to drought‐induced cavitation. The hybrids shared various leaf‐level gas exchange traits with both parents. All aspens showed limited loss of leaf photosynthetic function following moderate freezing. Main Conclusions
The Niobrara River hybrid population is vulnerable to drought due to its combination of inherited drought avoidance and tolerance traits. As climate changes, P. x smithii will likely suffer from increased drought stress, while being unaffected by frost during warmer springs. The two parental species contrast in their survival mechanisms in response to climatic stress, with P. tremuloides tending toward freezing tolerance but drought avoidance and P. grandidentata tending toward freezing avoidance and drought tolerance

Complicaciones de la colocación de malla sintética vaginal para la incontinencia urinaria de esfuerzo
ResumenAntecedentesLas mallas para la incontinencia urinaria (IU) se han utilizado a pesar de la falta de evidencia de nivel i en la literatura para evaluar su seguridad y eficacia a largo plazo. Las complicaciones relacionadas con la malla provocaron una advertencia emitida por la FDA en 2008 y dejaron de ser consideradas eventos raros. Las complicaciones más comunes son la retención aguda de orina, sangrado, recurrencia o persistencia de la IU, erosión de uretra e infección de la malla.ObjetivoConocer cuáles son las complicaciones derivadas del tratamiento quirúrgico de la IU femenina con la colocación de mallas suburetrales.Material y métodoSe analizaron los pacientes con diagnóstico de IU operadas con cirugía antiincontinencia y colocación de malla vaginal del año 2007 al 2014. Se analizó las complicaciones derivadas de la colocación de malla y la recuperación de continencia.ResultadosA 58 pacientes se les colocó sling (cabestrillo) con malla sintética; edad promedio de 56 años. El 51% de las pacientes tenían IU de esfuerzo y el 49% IU mixta. Las complicaciones tempranas fueron: 4 pacientes con retención aguda de orina. Las complicaciones tardías: dolor uretral o vaginal (12.2%), dispareunia (20%) y extrusión de malla (10%) manejado con retiro de la misma, 2 de ellas requiriendo 2 procedimientos quirúrgicos. El 12% presentaron urgencia de novo, el 90.2% evolucionaron sin incontinencia, el 9.7% con IU postoperatoria y 2 pacientes sin mejoría.DiscusiónNuestra serie, aunque pequeña, muestra una baja tasa de complicaciones a largo plazo relacionadas con la malla en comparación con la mayoría de las series que muestran una tasa de reoperación de hasta>70% y con múltiples casos de retiro de malla, por lo que en nuestra experiencia los slings suburetrales continúan siendo una opción adecuada en el manejo de la IU.ConclusionesLos slings suburetrales son una opción segura y efectiva en el manejo de la IU.AbstractBackgroundSurgical mesh has been used for treating urinary incontinence (UI) despite the lack of level i evidence in the literature evaluating its long-term safety and efficacy. Mesh-related complications were responsible for a warning issued by the FDA in 2008 and they stopped being considered rare events. The most common complications are acute urinary retention, bleeding, recurrence or persistence of UI, erosion of the urethra, and mesh infection.AimsTo determine the complications derived from surgical UI treatment with the placement of suburethral mesh in women.Material and methodPatients diagnosed with UI that underwent anti-incontinence surgery with the placement of vaginal mesh within the time frame of 2007 and 2014 were analyzed. Mesh placement complications and the recovery of continence were evaluated.ResultsA synthetic mesh sling was placed in 58 patients with a mean age of 56 years. A total of 51% of the patients had stress urinary incontinence and 49% had mixed urinary incontinence. Early complications were: 4 patients with acute urine retention. Late complications were: urethral or vaginal pain (12.2%), dyspareunia (20%), and mesh extrusion (10%) that was managed through mesh removal; 2 of those patients required surgical procedures. Twelve percent of the patients presented with de novo urgency, 90.2% progressed with no incontinence, 9.7% presented with postoperative UI, and 2 patients had no improvement.DiscussionAlthough small, our case series showed a low long-term complication rate with the use of surgical mesh, compared with the majority of case series that demonstrate a re-operation rate>70%, as well as numerous cases of mesh removal. Thus, it is our experience that suburethral slings continue to be an adequate UI management option.ConclusionsSuburethral slings are a safe and effective option in UI management
Search for the exotic resonance in the NOMAD experiment
A search for exotic Theta baryon via Theta -> proton +Ks decay mode in the
NOMAD muon neutrino DIS data is reported. The special background generation
procedure was developed. The proton identification criteria are tuned to
maximize the sensitivity to the Theta signal as a function of xF which allows
to study the Theta production mechanism. We do not observe any evidence for the
Theta state in the NOMAD data. We provide an upper limit on Theta production
rate at 90% CL as 2.13 per 1000 of neutrino interactions.Comment: Accepted to European Physics Journal
Production properties of K*(892) vector mesons and their spin alignment as measured in the NOMAD experiment
First measurements of K*(892) mesons production properties and their spin
alignment in nu_mu charged current (CC) and neutral current (NC) interactions
are presented. The analysis of the full data sample of the NOMAD experiment is
performed in different kinematic regions. For K*+ and K*- mesons produced in
nu_mu CC interactions and decaying into K0 pi+/- we have found the following
yields per event: (2.6 +/- 0.2 (stat.) +/- 0.2 (syst.))% and (1.6 +/- 0.1
(stat.) +/- 0.1 (syst.))% respectively, while for the K*+ and K*- mesons
produced in nu NC interactions the corresponding yields per event are: (2.5 +/-
0.3 (stat.) +/- 0.3 (syst.))% and (1.0 +/- 0.3 (stat.) +/- 0.2 (syst.))%. The
results obtained for the rho00 parameter, 0.40 +/- 0.06 (stat) +/- 0.03 (syst)
and 0.28 +/- 0.07 (stat) +/- 0.03 (syst) for K*+ and K*- produced in nu_mu CC
interactions, are compared to theoretical predictions tuned on LEP measurements
in e+e- annihilation at the Z0 pole. For K*+ mesons produced in nu NC
interactions the measured rho00 parameter is 0.66 +/- 0.10 (stat) +/- 0.05

Final NOMAD results on nu_mu->nu_tau and nu_e->nu_tau oscillations including a new search for nu_tau appearance using hadronic tau decays
Results from the nu_tau appearance search in a neutrino beam using the full
NOMAD data sample are reported. A new analysis unifies all the hadronic tau
decays, significantly improving the overall sensitivity of the experiment to
oscillations. The "blind analysis" of all topologies yields no evidence for an
oscillation signal. In the two-family oscillation scenario, this sets a 90%
C.L. allowed region in the sin^2(2theta)-Delta m^2 plane which includes
sin^2(2theta)<3.3 x 10^{-4} at large Delta m^2 and Delta m^2 < 0.7 eV^2/c^4 at
sin^2(2theta)=1. The corresponding contour in the nu_e->nu_tau oscillation
hypothesis results in sin^2(2theta)<1.5 x 10^{-2} at large Delta m^2 and Delta
m^2 < 5.9 eV^2/c^4 at sin^2(2theta)=1. We also derive limits on effective
