An important fraction of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formed by atmospheric oxidation of diverse volatile organic compounds (VOC) has recently been shown to consist of high-molecular weight oligomeric species. In our previous study (Sadezky et al., 2006), we reported the identification and characterization of oligomers as main constituents of SOA from gas-phase ozonolysis of small enol ethers. These oligomers contained repeated chain units of the same chemical composition as the main Criegee Intermediates (CI) formed during the ozonolysis reaction, which were CH2O2 (mass 46) for alkyl vinyl ethers (AVE) and C2H4O2 (mass 60) for ethyl propenyl ether (EPE). In the present work, we extend our previous study to another enol ether (ethyl butenyl ether EBE) and a variety of structurally related small alkenes (<i>trans</i>-3-hexene, <i>trans</i>-4-octene and 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene). <br><br> Experiments have been carried out in a 570 l spherical glass reactor at atmospheric conditions in the absence of seed aerosol. SOA formation was measured by a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS). SOA filter samples were collected and chemically characterized off-line by ESI(+)/TOF MS and ESI(+)/TOF MS/MS, and elemental compositions were determined by ESI(+)/FTICR MS and ESI(+)/FTICR MS/MS. The results for all investigated unsaturated compounds are in excellent agreement with the observations of our previous study. Analysis of the collected SOA filter samples reveal the presence of oligomeric compounds in the mass range 200 to 800 u as major constituents. The repeated chain units of these oligomers are shown to systematically have the same chemical composition as the respective main Criegee Intermediate (CI) formed during ozonolysis of the unsaturated compounds, which is C3H6O2 (mass 74) for ethyl butenyl ether (EBE), <i>trans</i>-3-hexene, and 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene, and C4H8O2 (mass 88) for extit{trans}-4-octene. Analogous fragmentation pathways among the oligomers formed by gas-phase ozonolysis of the different alkenes and enol ethers in our present and previous study, characterized by successive losses of the respective CI-like chain unit as a neutral fragment, indicate a similar principal structure. In this work, we confirm the basic structure of a linear oligoperoxide – [CH(R)-O-O]n – for all detected oligomers, with the repeated chain unit CH(R)OO corresponding to the respective major CI. The elemental compositions of parent ions, fragment ions and fragmented neutrals determined by accurate mass measurements with the FTICR technique allow us to assign a complete structure to the oligomer molecules. We suggest that the formation of the oligoperoxidic chain units occurs through a new gas-phase reaction mechanism observed for the first time in our present work, which involves the addition of stabilized CI to organic peroxy radicals. Furthermore, copolymerization of CI simultaneously formed in the gas phase from two different unsaturated compounds is shown to occur during the ozonolysis of a mixture of extit{trans}-3-hexene and ethyl vinyl ether (EVE), leading to formation of oligomers with mixed chain units C3H6O2 (mass 74) and CH2O2 (mass 46). We therefore suggest oligoperoxide formation by repeated peroxy radical-stabilized CI addition to be a general reaction pathway of small stabilized CI in the gas phase, which represents an alternative way to high-molecular products and thus contributes to SOA formation

Thermopower in the strongly overdoped region of single-layer Bi2Sr2CuO6+d superconductor

The evolution of the thermoelectric power S(T) with doping, p, of single-layer Bi2Sr2CuO6+d ceramics in the strongly overdoped region is studied in detail. Analysis in term of drag and diffusion contributions indicates a departure of the diffusion from the T-linear metallic behavior. This effect is increased in the strongly overdoped range (p~0.2-0.28) and should reflect the proximity of some topological change.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Anomalous electronic susceptibility in Bi2Sr2CuO6+d and comparison with other overdoped cuprates

We report magnetic susceptibility performed on overdoped Bi2Sr2CuO6+d powders as a function of oxygen doping d and temperature T. The decrease of the spin susceptibility with increasing T is confirmed. At sufficient high temperature, the spin susceptibility Chi_s presents an unusual linear temperature dependence Chi_s ~ Chi_s0 -Chi_1 T. Moreover, a linear correlation between Chi_1 and Chi_s0 for increasing hole concentration is displayed. A temperature Tchi, independent of hole doping characterizes this scaling. Comparison with other cuprates of the literature(LSCO, Tl-2201 and Bi-2212), over the same overdoped range, shows similarities with above results. These non conventional metal features will be discussed in terms of a singular narrow-band structure.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure

The fibroblast mitogen platelet-derived growth factor -BB (PDGF-BB) induces a transient expression of the orphan nuclear receptor NR4A1 (also named Nur77, TR3 or NGFIB). The aim of the present study was to investigate the pathways through which NR4A1 is induced by PDGF-BB and its functional role. We demonstrate that in PDGF-BB stimulated NIH3T3 cells, the MEK1/2 inhibitor CI-1040 strongly represses NR4A1 expression, whereas Erk5 downregulation delays the expression, but does not block it. Moreover, we report that treatment with the NF-κB inhibitor BAY11-7082 suppresses NR4A1 mRNA and protein expression. The majority of NR4A1 in NIH3T3 was found to be localized in the cytoplasm and only a fraction was translocated to the nucleus after continued PDGF-BB treatment. Silencing NR4A1 slightly increased the proliferation rate of NIH3T3 cells; however, it did not affect the chemotactic or survival abilities conferred by PDGF-BB. Moreover, overexpression of NR4A1 promoted anchorage-independent growth of NIH3T3 cells and the glioblastoma cell lines U-105MG and U-251MG. Thus, whereas NR4A1, induced by PDGF-BB, suppresses cell growth on a solid surface, it increases anchorage-independent growth

Subpolar North Atlantic western boundary density anomalies and the Meridional Overturning Circulation

Changes in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, which have the potential to drive societally-important climate impacts, have traditionally been linked to the strength of deep water formation in the subpolar North Atlantic. Yet there is neither clear observational evidence nor agreement among models about how changes in deep water formation influence overturning. Here, we use data from a trans-basin mooring array (OSNAP—Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program) to show that winter convection during 2014–2018 in the interior basin had minimal impact on density changes in the deep western boundary currents in the subpolar basins. Contrary to previous modeling studies, we find no discernable relationship between western boundary changes and subpolar overturning variability over the observational time scales. Our results require a reconsideration of the notion of deep western boundary changes representing overturning characteristics, with implications for constraining the source of overturning variability within and downstream of the subpolar region

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In Gabon, following the adoption of amodiaquine/artesunate combination (AQ/AS) as first-line treatment of malaria and of sulphadoxine/pyrimethamine (SP) for preventive intermittent treatment of pregnant women, a clinical trial of SP versus AQ was conducted in a sub-urban area. This is the first study carried out in Gabon following the WHO guidelines.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A random comparison of the efficacy of AQ (10 mg/kg/day × 3 d) and a single dose of SP (25 mg/kg of sulphadoxine/1.25 mg/kg of pyrimethamine) was performed in children under five years of age, with uncomplicated falciparum malaria, using the 28-day WHO therapeutic efficacy test. In addition, molecular genotyping was performed to distinguish recrudescence from reinfection and to determine the frequency of the <it>dhps </it>K540E mutation, as a molecular marker to predict SP-treatment failure.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The day-28 PCR-adjusted treatment failures for SP and AQ were 11.6% (8/69; 95% IC: 5.5–22.1) and 28.2% (20/71; 95% CI: 17.7–38.7), respectively This indicated that SP was significantly superior to AQ (<it>P </it>= 0.019) in the treatment of uncomplicated childhood malaria and for preventing recurrent infections. Both treatments were safe and well-tolerated, with no serious adverse reactions recorded. The <it>dhps </it>K540E mutation was not found among the 76 parasite isolates tested.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The level of AQ-resistance observed in the present study may compromise efficacy and duration of use of the AQ/AS combination, the new first-line malaria treatment. Gabonese policy-makers need to plan country-wide and close surveillance of AQ/AS efficacy to determine whether, and for how long, these new recommendations for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria remain valid.</p
