    Four-point probe measurements using current probes with voltage feedback to measure electric potentials

    We present a four-point probe resistance measurement technique which uses four equivalent current measuring units, resulting in minimal hardware requirements and corresponding sources of noise. Local sample potentials are measured by a software feedback loop which adjusts the corresponding tip voltage such that no current flows to the sample. The resulting tip voltage is then equivalent to the sample potential at the tip position. We implement this measurement method into a multi-tip scanning tunneling microscope setup such that potentials can also be measured in tunneling contact, allowing in principle truly non-invasive four-probe measurements. The resulting measurement capabilities are demonstrated for BiSbTe3_3 and Si(111)(7×7)(111)-(7\times7) samples

    An in situ study of reconstructed gold electrode surfaces by second harmonic generation.

    Second harmonic generation (SHG) was employed to monitor in situ the potential-induced reconstruction of Au(111) and Au(100) electrodes. Rotating the sample by 360° about the surface normal yields for the unreconstructed Au(111)-(1×1) surface the well-known threefold symmetry pattern in the SHG intensity, while Au(100)-(1×1) shows no rotational anisotropy, as expected for C4v symmetry. For the reconstructed Au(111)-(1×23) surface, however, an additional onefold symmetry pattern is observed, which allows in situ monitoring of the structural transition between (1×1) and (1×23). For the reconstructed Au(100)-(5×20) surface, a threefold symmetry pattern was found

    Viscous spin exchange torque on precessional magnetization in (LaMnO3)2n/(SrMnO3)n(\mathrm{LaMnO}_3)_{2n}/(\mathrm{SrMnO}_3)_{n} superlattices

    Photoinduced magnetization dynamics is investigated in chemically ordered (LaMnO3)2n/(SrMnO3)n(\mathrm{LaMnO}_3)_{2n}/(\mathrm{SrMnO}_3)_n superlattices using the time-resolved magneto-optic Kerr effect. A monotonic frequency-field dependence is observed for the n=1n=1 superlattice, indicating a single spin population consistent with a homogeneous hole distribution. In contrast, for n2n\geq2 superlattices, a large precession frequency is observed at low fields indicating the presence of an exchange torque in the dynamic regime. We propose a model that ascribes the emergence of exchange torque to the coupling between two spin populations -- viscous and fast spins.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    European Mixed Forests: definition and research perspectives

    peer-reviewedAim of study: We aim at (i) developing a reference definition of mixed forests in order to harmonize comparative research in mixed forests and (ii) briefly review the research perspectives in mixed forests. Area of study: The definition is developed in Europe but can be tested worldwide. Material and methods: Review of existent definitions of mixed forests based and literature review encompassing dynamics, management and economic valuation of mixed forests. Main results: A mixed forest is defined as a forest unit, excluding linear formations, where at least two tree species coexist at any developmental stage, sharing common resources (light, water, and/or soil nutrients). The presence of each of the component species is normally quantified as a proportion of the number of stems or of basal area, although volume, biomass or canopy cover as well as proportions by occupied stand area may be used for specific objectives. A variety of structures and patterns of mixtures can occur, and the interactions between the component species and their relative proportions may change over time. The research perspectives identified are (i) species interactions and responses to hazards, (ii) the concept of maximum density in mixed forests, (iii) conversion of monocultures to mixed-species forest and (iv) economic valuation of ecosystem services provided by mixed forests. Research highlights: The definition is considered a high-level one which encompasses previous attempts to define mixed forests. Current fields of research indicate that gradient studies, experimental design approaches, and model simulations are key topics providing new research opportunities.The networking in this study has been supported by COST Action FP1206 EuMIXFOR

    Broadband THz absorption spectrometer based on excitonic nonlinear optical effects

    A broadly tunable THz source is realized via difference frequency generation, in which an enhancement to χ (3) that is obtained via resonant excitation of III–V semiconductor quantum well excitons is utilized. The symmetry of the quantum wells (QWs) is broken by utilizing the built-in electric-field across a p–i–n junction to produce effective χ (2) processes, which are derived from the high χ (3) . This χ (2) media exhibits an onset of nonlinear processes at ~4 W cm −2 , thereby enabling area (and, hence, power) scaling of the THz emitter. Phase matching is realized laterally through normal incidence excitation. Using two collimated 130 mW continuous wave (CW) semiconductor lasers with ~1-mm beam diameters, we realize monochromatic THz emission that is tunable from 0.75 to 3 THz and demonstrate the possibility that this may span 0.2–6 THz with linewidths of ~20 GHz and efficiencies of ~1 × 10 –5 , thereby realizing ~800 nW of THz power. Then, transmission spectroscopy of atmospheric features is demonstrated, thereby opening the way for compact, low-cost, swept-wavelength THz spectroscopy
