National audienceThe Upper Rhine River has been heavily impacted by channelization for flood protection and navigation, and then by damming for hydropower generation. In normal non flooding conditions, most of the flows are diverted in a canalized section whereas the regulated âold Rhineâ bypassed reach runs a minimum flow. Between Huningue and Neuf-Brisach, engineering works induced simplification and stabilization of the channel pattern from a formerly braiding sector to a single incised channel, hydrological modifications, bottom armouring due to bedload decrease, and thus ecological alterations. Two complementary and interdisciplinary projects have been initiated to restore alluvial morphodynamics: i) the international âINTERREG IV - Redynamisation of the old Rhineâ project (2009-2012) coordinated by the Alsace region, France; ii) the left bank âcontrolled erosionâ project launched by ElectricitĂ© de France (EDF) within Kembs hydroelectric station relicensing process since 2003-2004. The purpose of these projects is to evaluate the feasibility of an important hydro-morphological and ecological restoration plan on a 45 km long reach, through both field testing of bank erosion techniques at favourable locations, and artificial sediments input from right bank excavations. This will help define possible long term prospective scenarios, in order to restore sustainable sediment transport, morphodynamics variability and associated ecological functions.
Recurrent Scedosporium apiospermum mycetoma successfully treated by surgical excision and terbinafine treatment: a case report and review of the literature
Background:
Scedosporium apiospermum
is an emerging opportunistic filamentous fungus, which is notorious for its
high levels of antifungal
âresistance. It is able to cause localized cutaneous or subcutaneous infections in both immuâ
nocompromised and immunocompetent persons, pulmonary infections in patients with predisposing pulmonary
diseases and invasive mycoses in immunocompromised patients. Subcutaneous infections caused by this fungus
frequently show chronic mycetomatous manifestation.
Case report:
We report the case of a 70
âyear
âold immunocompromised man, who developed a fungal mycetomaâ
tous infection on his right leg. There was no history of trauma; the aetiological agent was identified by microscopic
examination and ITS sequencing. This is the second reported case of
S. apiospermum
subcutaneous infections in
Hungary, which was successfully treated by surgical excision and terbinafine treatment. After 7
months, the patient
remained asymptomatic. Considering the antifungal susceptibility and increasing incidence of the fungus,
Sce
-
dosporium
related subcutaneous infections reported in the past quarter of century in European countries were also
reviewed.
Conclusions:
Corticosteroid treatment represents a serious risk factor of
S. apiospermum
infections, especially if the
patient get in touch with manure
âenriched or polluted soil or water. Such infections have emerged several times in
European countries in the past decades. The presented data suggest that besides the commonly applied voriconaâ
zole, terbinafine may be an alternative for the therapy of mycetomatous
Scedosporium
infections
Spadin, a Sortilin-Derived Peptide, Targeting Rodent TREK-1 Channels: A New Concept in the Antidepressant Drug Design
We found that spadin, a natural peptide derived from sortilin, blocks the mouse TREK-1 channel and might be an efficient and fast-acting antidepressant
In the areas without any hydrographie system, the fact that the disposal of the effluents does not lead to an effective equipping sets limits to projects and does not ensure a good protection to their environment. From 2 examples (Port-Leucate and Flesselles), this paper points out the interest of slow infiltration devices, into the soil, for the elimination and the final treatment of the effluents. These devices are valid for the areas where the groundwater is the obligatory collector of the effluents, but compete with sea outlet pipes for the littoral areas. Bize Jean, Riou V., BĂ©raud J. Dose and time effects of treatment with low doses of a LRH agonist on testicular axis and accessory sex organs in rats.
LRH and its agonists have been shown to exert both stimulatory and inhibitory effects on testicular function. In the present study, the dose and length of treatment were tested to determine the appearance of the stimulatory and inhibitory effects of LRH agonist on testicular axis including the three levels. Two doses of an agonist of LRH, 40 and 100 ng/100 g body weight (buserelin, 'agonist'), were administered daily for 1 to 15 days to adult male rats. Control rats received the vehicle only. On day 1, 2, 4, 8 and 15 of treatment, the pituitary, testicular and peripheral levels (weight of accessory sex organs and androgen receptors in ventral prostate) were tested 6 h after the last injection. For the 15 days of treatment with both doses, a stimulatory effect of the 'agonist' was observed on LH and FSH release. A short exposure (1-2 days) to the low dose of the 'agonist' had a stimulatory effect on the density of LH/hCG testicular receptors (326 +/- 49 vs control 185 +/- 21 fmol/mg protein, mean +/- SEM), on the weights of seminal vesicles and ventral prostate and exposure to both doses led to high plasma testosterone levels (13.8 +/- 0.5 and 13.7 +/- 0.7 ng/ml, respectively, vs control 2.6 +/- 0.3 ng/ml), and to an increased density of nuclear androgen receptors in the ventral prostate (142 +/- 9 and 144 +/- 15 fmol/mg protein respectively vs control 97 +/- 12 fmol/mg protein).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS

Very slow creep tests on salt samples
International audienceLong-term creep tests have been performed on rock-salt and argillite samples under very small uniaxial loadings (Ï = 0.02 to 0.1 MPa) . To minimize the effects of temperature variations, testing devices were set in a mine where temperature fluctuations are of the order of one-hundredth of a degree Celsius. The mechanical loading was provided by dead weights. The deformations were measured through special displacement sensors with a resolution of âΔ = 10-8. Strain rates as small as Î = 7 Ă 10-13s-1 were measured. These tests allow rock-sample creep to be investigated at very small strain rates. The tests also prove that extrapolation of constitutive laws at very small rates is often incorrect
