    Abatement of 1,2,4-trichlorobencene by wet peroxide oxidation catalysed by goethite and enhanced by visible led light at neutral ph

    There is significant environmental concern about chlorinated organic compounds (COCs) in wastewater, surface water, and groundwater due to their low biodegradability and high persistence. In this work, 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (124-TCB) was selected as a model compound to study its abatement using wet peroxide oxidation at neutral pH with goethite as a heterogeneous catalyst, which was enhanced with visible monochromatic light-emitting diode (LED) light (470 nm). A systematic study of the main operating variables (oxidant and catalyst concentration and irradiance) was accomplished to investigate their influence in the abatement of 124-TCB in water. The reaction was carried out in a well-mixed reactor of glass irradiated by a visible LED light. The hydrogen peroxide concentration was tested from 0 to 18 mM, the goethite concentration within the range 0.1–1.0 g·L−1 and the irradiance from 0.10 to 0.24 W·cm−2 at neutral pH. It was found that this oxidation method is a very efficient technique to abate 124-TCB, reaching a pollutant conversion of 0.9 when using 0.1 g·L−1 of goethite, 18 mM of H2O2, and 0.24 of W·cm−2 . Moreover, the system performance was evaluated using the photonic efficiency (ratio of the moles of 124-TCB abated and the moles of photons arriving at the reactor window).     La tecnoferencia abarca las intrusiones e interrupciones que ocurren en la vida diaria de las personas que hacen un uso excesivo de dispositivos tecnológicos, especialmente el teléfono móvil. Este problema es especialmente grave en la interacción entre padres y madres y sus respectivos hijos e hijas, aspecto que afecta al proceso educativo que se desarrolla en el ámbito familiar. El objetivo de este estudio es conocer la percepción de los padres y madres sobre el uso de la tecnología, especialmente por lo que se refiere a los hábitos existentes en torno a la tecnoferencia propia durante la infancia de sus hijos e hijas. Los participantes en esta investigación han sido 74 padres y madres con hijos e hijas que cursan Educación Infantil. El instrumento utilizado ha sido un cuestionario elaborado ad hoc con 26 preguntas de respuesta tipo Likert. Los resultados reflejan que los padres y madres son conscientes del mal uso que se le da en casa a la tecnología digital y, por otro lado, consideran necesario que en la escuela se eduque y se trabaje con el alumnado sobre el uso responsable de estos dispositivos tecnológicos. Es necesario una formación adecuada, tanto para las familias, como para los hijos e hijas, con el fin de utilizar realmente la tecnología de forma coherente y sin afectar negativamente las relaciones familiares

The aim of our study is to assess the relationship between fruit and vegetable (F&V) consumption and plasma FAs and their subtypes. Methods and Results: Plasma FAs are assessed in a cross-sectional analysis of a subsample of 240 subjects from the PREDIMED-Plus study. Participants are categorized into four groups of fruit, vegetable, and fat intake according to the food frequency questionnaire. Plasma FA analysis is performed using gas chromatography. Associations between FAs and F&V consumption are adjusted for age, sex, physical activity, bodymass index (BMI), total energy intake, and alcohol consumption. Plasma saturated FAs are lower in groups with high F&V consumption (-1.20 mg cL−1 [95% CI: [-2.22, - 0.18], p-value = 0.021), especially when fat intake is high (-1.74 mg cL−1 [95% CI: [-3.41, -0.06], p-value = 0.042). Total FAs and n-6 polyunsaturated FAs tend to be lower in high consumers of F&V only in the high-fat intake groups. Conclusions: F&V consumption is associated with lower plasma saturated FAs when fat intake is high.     Circulating carotenoids are associated with favorable lipid and fatty acid profiles in an older population at high cardiovascular risk

    Carotenoid intake has been reported to be associated with improved cardiovascular health, but there is little information on actual plasma concentrations of these compounds as biomarkers of cardiometabolic risk. The objective was to investigate the association between circulating plasma carotenoids and different cardiometabolic risk factors and the plasma fatty acid profile. This is a cross-sectional evaluation of baseline data conducted in a subcohort (106 women and 124 men) of an ongoing multi-factorial lifestyle trial for primary cardiovascular prevention. Plasma concentrations of carotenoids were quantified by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The associations between carotenoid concentrations and cardiometabolic risk factors were assessed using regression models adapted for interval-censored variables. Carotenoid concentrations were cross-sectionally inversely associated with serum triglyceride concentrations [-2.79 mg/dl (95% CI: -4.25, -1.34) and -5.15 mg/dl (95% CI: -7.38, -2.93), p-values = 0.0002 and <0.00001 in women and men, respectively], lower levels of plasma saturated fatty acids [-0.09% (95% CI: -0.14, -0.03) and -0.15 % (95% CI: -0.23, -0.08), p-values = 0.001 and 0.0001 in women and men, respectively], and higher levels of plasma polyunsaturated fatty acids [(0.12 % (95% CI: -0.01, 0.25) and 0.39 % (95% CI: 0.19, 0.59), p-values = 0.065 and 0.0001 in women and men, respectively] in the whole population. Plasma carotenoid concentrations were also associated with higher plasma HDL-cholesterol in women [0.47 mg/dl (95% CI: 0.23, 0.72), p-value: 0.0002], and lower fasting plasma glucose in men [-1.35 mg/dl (95% CI: -2.12, -0.59), p-value: 0.001].     Clonal chromosomal mosaicism and loss of chromosome Y in elderly men increase vulnerability for SARS-CoV-2

    The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) had an estimated overall case fatality ratio of 1.38% (pre-vaccination), being 53% higher in males and increasing exponentially with age. Among 9578 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the SCOURGE study, we found 133 cases (1.42%) with detectable clonal mosaicism for chromosome alterations (mCA) and 226 males (5.08%) with acquired loss of chromosome Y (LOY). Individuals with clonal mosaic events (mCA and/or LOY) showed a 54% increase in the risk of COVID-19 lethality. LOY is associated with transcriptomic biomarkers of immune dysfunction, pro-coagulation activity and cardiovascular risk. Interferon-induced genes involved in the initial immune response to SARS-CoV-2 are also down-regulated in LOY. Thus, mCA and LOY underlie at least part of the sex-biased severity and mortality of COVID-19 in aging patients. Given its potential therapeutic and prognostic relevance, evaluation of clonal mosaicism should be implemented as biomarker of COVID-19 severity in elderly people.     Spatiotemporal Characteristics of the Largest HIV-1 CRF02_AG Outbreak in Spain: Evidence for Onward Transmissions

    Background and Aim: The circulating recombinant form 02_AG (CRF02_AG) is the predominant clade among the human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) non-Bs with a prevalence of 5.97% (95% Confidence Interval-CI: 5.41–6.57%) across Spain. Our aim was to estimate the levels of regional clustering for CRF02_AG and the spatiotemporal characteristics of the largest CRF02_AG subepidemic in Spain.Methods: We studied 396 CRF02_AG sequences obtained from HIV-1 diagnosed patients during 2000–2014 from 10 autonomous communities of Spain. Phylogenetic analysis was performed on the 391 CRF02_AG sequences along with all globally sampled CRF02_AG sequences (N = 3,302) as references. Phylodynamic and phylogeographic analysis was performed to the largest CRF02_AG monophyletic cluster by a Bayesian method in BEAST v1.8.0 and by reconstructing ancestral states using the criterion of parsimony in Mesquite v3.4, respectively.Results: The HIV-1 CRF02_AG prevalence differed across Spanish autonomous communities we sampled from (p &lt; 0.001). Phylogenetic analysis revealed that 52.7% of the CRF02_AG sequences formed 56 monophyletic clusters, with a range of 2–79 sequences. The CRF02_AG regional dispersal differed across Spain (p = 0.003), as suggested by monophyletic clustering. For the largest monophyletic cluster (subepidemic) (N = 79), 49.4% of the clustered sequences originated from Madrid, while most sequences (51.9%) had been obtained from men having sex with men (MSM). Molecular clock analysis suggested that the origin (tMRCA) of the CRF02_AG subepidemic was in 2002 (median estimate; 95% Highest Posterior Density-HPD interval: 1999–2004). Additionally, we found significant clustering within the CRF02_AG subepidemic according to the ethnic origin.Conclusion: CRF02_AG has been introduced as a result of multiple introductions in Spain, following regional dispersal in several cases. We showed that CRF02_AG transmissions were mostly due to regional dispersal in Spain. The hot-spot for the largest CRF02_AG regional subepidemic in Spain was in Madrid associated with MSM transmission risk group. The existence of subepidemics suggest that several spillovers occurred from Madrid to other areas. CRF02_AG sequences from Hispanics were clustered in a separate subclade suggesting no linkage between the local and Hispanic subepidemics

    Selective removal of chlorinated organic compounds from lindane wastes by combination of nonionic surfactant soil flushing and Fenton oxidation

    The extensive use of the organochlorine pesticide lindane in the second half of the 20th century generated large volumes of wastes over the world. Among these wastes, a dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL), mainly composed of chlorobenzenes, hexachlorocyclohexanes and heptachlorocyclohexanes, was dumped in insecure landfills remaining in the subsurface and contaminating the groundwater. A coupled process, combining soil flushing (with a nonionic surfactant) and Fenton oxidation, was proposed to deal with this problem. A commercial surfactant (E-Mulse 3 ®) was used to extract most of the residual DNAPL in soil at column conditions. The resulting surfactant flushing solution (SFS) presented high concentration of chlorinated organic compounds (COCs = 3693 mg L−1). In order to recover the surfactant and abate the COCs, the SFS was treated by Fenton process using three doses of hydrogen peroxide (200%, 100% and 50% of the theoretical stoichiometric amount for the complete mineralization of COCs; maintaining a molar ratio of H2O2:Fe = 32). Conversions of COCs above 80% were obtained when H2O2 doses of 100% and 200% of the stoichiometric amount were used at 144 h and 48 h, respectively. Non-aromatic compounds resulted to be less prone to oxidation by hydroxyl radicals than chlorobenzenes.     Thermally activated persulfate for the chemical oxidation of chlorinated organic compounds in groundwater

    Chlorinated pesticides were extensively produced in the XX century, generating high amounts of toxic wastes often dumped in the surroundings of the production sites, resulting in hot points of soil and groundwater pollution worldwide. This is the case of Bailín landfill, located in Sabiñánigo (Spain), where groundwater is highly polluted with chlorobenzenes (mono, di, tri and tetra) and hexachlorocyclohexanes. This study addresses the abatement of chlorinated organic compounds (COCs) present in the groundwater coming from the Bailín landfill by thermally activated persulfate, PS (TAP). The influence of temperature (30–50 °C) and oxidant concentration (2–40 g L−1) on the efficiency of COCs (initial concentration of COCs = 57.53 mg L−1, determined by the solubility of the pollutants in water) degradation has been investigated. Raising the reaction temperature and PS concentration the degradation of COCs significantly accelerates, as a result of higher production of sulfate radicals. The thermal activation of PS implies side reactions, involving the unproductive decomposition of this oxidant. The activation energy calculated for this reaction (128.48 kJ mol−1) reveals that is slightly more favored by temperature than the oxidation of COCs by sulfate radicals (102.4–115.72 kJ mol−1). At the selected operating conditions (PS = 10 g L−1, 40 °C), the almost complete conversion of COCs and a dechlorination and mineralization degree above 80% were obtained at 168 h reaction time.     Acute Toxicity Evaluation of Lindane-Waste Contaminated Soils Treated by Surfactant-Enhanced ISCO

    The discharge of lindane wastes in unlined landfills causes groundwater and soil pollution worldwide. The liquid waste generated (a mixture of 28 chlorinated organic compounds, COCs) constitutes a dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) that is highly persistent. Although in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) is effective for degrading organic pollutants, the low COCs solubility requires high reaction times. Simultaneous injection of surfactants and oxidants (S-ISCO) is a promising technology to solve the limitation of ISCO treatment. The current work studies the remediation of highly polluted soil (COCs = 3682 mg/kg) obtained at the Sardas landfill (Sabi&ntilde;&aacute;&ntilde;igo, Spain) by ISCO and S-ISCO treatments. Special attention is paid to acute soil toxicity before and after the soil treatment. Microtox&reg;, modified Basic Solid-Phase Test (mBSPT) and adapted Organic Solvent Sample Solubilization Test (aOSSST) were used for this scope. Persulfate (PS, 210 mM) activated by alkali (NaOH, 210 mM) was used in both ISCO and S-ISCO runs. A non-ionic and biodegradable surfactant selected in previous work, Emulse&reg;3 (E3, 5, and 10 g/L), was applied in S-ISCO experiments. Runs were performed in soil columns filled with 50 g of polluted soil, with eight pore volumes (Pvs) of the reagents injected and 96 h between successive Pv injections. The total treatment time was 32 days. The results were compared with those corresponding without surfactant (ISCO). After remediation treatments, soils were water-washed, simulating the conditions of groundwater flux in the subsoil. The treatments applied highly reduced soil toxicity (final soil toxicity equivalent to that obtained for non-contaminated soil, mBSPT) and organic extract toxicity (reduction &gt; 95%, aOSSST). Surfactant application did not cause an increase in the toxicity of the treated soil, highlighting its suitability for full-scale applications
