    Length-weight relationship and condition factor of Pethia ticto (Hamilton, 1822) from Gomti river in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India

    This study describes the length-weight relation (LWR) of small indigenous fish Pethia ticto from Gomti River, Aamghat, Haliyapur, Sultanpur district 260 29N and 810 44E, 751m (msl) Uttar Pradesh, India. A total of 306 specimens were caught by random sampling method using traditional fishing gear as gillnet, cast net and dragnet of various mesh sizes from June 2016 to May 2017, once in a month. Total Length (mm) was measured from anteriormost part of the snout to the posterior-most part of the caudal fin and body weight (g) were taken by digital electronic balance. The analysis of data shows that the allometric coefficient is close to isometric value (3.0). Allometric growth indicates a more rotund population of fish when the values of growth coefficient are higher than 3.0 (b>3). If the value of growth coefficient is less than 3.0, the population of fish is known to be less rotund. Isometric growth indicates that the shape of fish does not change as it grows (b=3). The coefficient of determination (R2 ) was also found significant (=0.97). Fulton’s condition factor further supports the results obtained ranged from 1.041 to 1.660 shows the degree of well being of a fish. This study is helpful in providing relevant information in the assessment of stock and estimation of the fish condition about its environmen

    Population characteristics and level of exploitation of Anabas testudineus (Bloch, 1792) in Rudrasagar Lake, a Ramsar site in North-eastern India

    298-302Population characteristics and exploitation level of Anabas testudineus from Rudrasagar lake, North-eastern India were studied to understand the dynamics of resource for suggesting necessary strategies for sustainable exploitation. A total of 1187 specimens were sampled to collect the length frequency data from May, 2015 to April, 2016. The length-weight relationship of the fish was found to be Log W = - 4.08+2.9 LogL (rÂČ=0.99). The Von Bertalanffy growth parameters i.e., asymptotic length (L∞)and growth coefficient (K) were estimated using ELEFAN-I as 216.25 mm and 0.78 yr-1respectively.The growth performance index (φ’) was calculated as 4.56. The approximate longevity (Tmax) was estimated as 3.8 years. The total mortality (Z), natural mortality (M) and fishing mortality (F) rates were estimated to be 1.95, 1.54 and 0.41 per year, respectively. The exploitation ratio (E) and exploitation rate (U) were observed to be 0.21 and 0.18, respectively. The results of relative yield-per-recruit (Y’/R) and relative biomass-per-recruit (B’/R) estimated as a function of Lc/L∞ and M/K were 0.46 and 1.95 respectively. The MSY level was estimated at 3.8 tonnes per year at F factor-0.8. Since the current level of exploitation of the species is well below Emax(0.50) and the observed landings are lower than the MSY level, it could be concluded that the fish is presently underexploited in the Lake. Reasonable fishing effort can be increased in order to obtain more yields so as to reach the MSY level and in that way increase the income of the economically poor fishermen communities of North-eastern India

    Management of wound is a challenge before clinician as well as pharmaceutical industries. It accounts a huge amount of economic loss every year. A good therapeutic agent for wound care should preferably give better result on one or more phases of healing devoid of harmful effects. A good step in this regard is use of traditional medicinal remedies and plants. WHO also support, promote and encourage use of various traditional medicines in primary health care due to easy accessibility, cost efficiency, safety and trust of public in them. Since many centuries Ayurvedic medicines have been used by people due to its ability to enhance immunity and prevent diseases. A number of plant, animal and mineral product are mentioned in Ayurvedic classics for treatment of different stages of wound. At the moment, scientific research on medicinal plants is being carried out most intensely in research institutes, universities and pharmaceutical laboratories as well as in the clinics of many developed countries. In the present article an attempt was made to collect such useful remedies from Ayurvedic classics for wound care which are effective, easily available, easy to prepare and use them without any side effects.Â

    Relevance: In developing countries, diarrhoea becomes a major health problem leading to morbidity and mortality in rural communities. In the present article we have tried to enumerate simple and single herbal remedies helpful in curing diarrhea.Materials and methods: literature survey was conducted with help of several important Ayurvedic text to collect information on plants used for treating diarrhoea.Results and conclusions: 140 single herbal preparations were reported in the present article. The study has supplied information on many medicinal plants and their method of uses. Such simple preparations may helps to the traditional healers in management of diarrhoea in initial stage. Moreover, these user friendly methodologies may contribute in initiation of advance investigation for discovery of new compounds and formulation from these potential plants

    Colorectal cancer starts in the colon or the rectum. These cancers can also be named colon cancer or rectal cancer, depending on the site of its origin. Colon cancer and rectal cancer are often grouped together because they have many common features. Most common malignancy in the gastrointestinal tract is the colorectal cancer. Usually in early stage colorectal cancer is asymptomatic. Clinical symptoms are limited and develop slowly over time. There are, however, a few symptoms or signs that most frequently lead to diagnostic evaluation. These symptoms include lower gastrointestinal bleeding or occult bleeding with resultant microcytic / iron deficiency anemia, changes in bowel habits and abdominal pain, painful defecation, stool mix with blood and mucous, increase frequency of defecation, morning spurious diarrhea, mass present at anal verge, anal canal or rectum which may or may not bleed on touch. Sometimes most of patients having Complains of bleeding per rectum, painful defecation, something coming out during defecation are treated as simple anorectal diseases without digital rectal examination by general practitioner and surgeon inspite being the cases of Colorectal Carcinoma. Colorectal cancer may also progress and present as large bowel obstruction or even as perforation, either at the site of the tumors or proximally. Up to 20 – 25% of colon cancer cases present as emergencies; in contrast to this only a small number of rectal cancer cases present as emergencies

    Outcome of substitutional urethroplasty by using dorsal onlay buccal mucosal graft: our experience of 10 years

    Background: The term urethral stricture is anterior urethral disease, or a scarring process involving the spongy erectile tissue of the corpus spongiosum. Methods: Total 127 patients were included in the study. Patient selection criteria for urethroplasty by using buccal mucosal graft was length of stricture more than 2 cm, deep spongiofibrosis, failed optical urethrotomy for 3 times, adequate oral hygiene and proper buccal mucosa. Results: Length of stricture varied from 3.2 to 14 cm. In first postoperative week, 20.47% (n=26) patients developed minor wound infection culture negative seroma formation in stitch line in the skin. Donor site complications like eating and drinking difficulty, dysguesia, pain, sensitivity, speaking disorders were not found in any patient while oral tightness was noted in 43.30% (n=55) of patients. On postoperative follow-up mean peak urinary flow rate (Qmax) was 28.0 ml/sec (range 20.0-30.6 ml/sec). After a mean follow-up of 8.8 months range (1 month to 33 months) overall success rate was 90.55% (n=115). Conclusions: Buccal mucosa is an excellent graft material for substitution free graft urethroplasty in case of long anterior urethral stricture with excellent success rate. Success rate of dorsal onlay substitution free buccal mucosal graft urethroplasty is affected by length of stricture and aetiology of strictures. Lichen sclerosus having moderate success rate of urethroplasty and higher rate of complication and failure rate in 1-stage buccal mucosal urethroplasty and can be considered for two stage urethroplasty in case of very long stricture of anterior urethra of lichen sclerosus origin

    Positive and Negative Regulation of Gli Activity by Kif7 in the Zebrafish Embryo

    Loss of function mutations of Kif7, the vertebrate orthologue of the Drosophila Hh pathway component Costal2, cause defects in the limbs and neural tubes of mice, attributable to ectopic expression of Hh target genes. While this implies a functional conservation of Cos2 and Kif7 between flies and vertebrates, the association of Kif7 with the primary cilium, an organelle absent from most Drosophila cells, suggests their mechanisms of action may have diverged. Here, using mutant alleles induced by Zinc Finger Nuclease-mediated targeted mutagenesis, we show that in zebrafish, Kif7 acts principally to suppress the activity of the Gli1 transcription factor. Notably, we find that endogenous Kif7 protein accumulates not only in the primary cilium, as previously observed in mammalian cells, but also in cytoplasmic puncta that disperse in response to Hh pathway activation. Moreover, we show that Drosophila Costal2 can substitute for Kif7, suggesting a conserved mode of action of the two proteins. We show that Kif7 interacts with both Gli1 and Gli2a and suggest that it functions to sequester Gli proteins in the cytoplasm, in a manner analogous to the regulation of Ci by Cos2 in Drosophila. We also show that zebrafish Kif7 potentiates Gli2a activity by promoting its dissociation from the Suppressor of Fused (Sufu) protein and present evidence that it mediates a Smo dependent modification of the full length form of Gli2a. Surprisingly, the function of Kif7 in the zebrafish embryo appears restricted principally to mesodermal derivatives, its inactivation having little effect on neural tube patterning, even when Sufu protein levels are depleted. Remarkably, zebrafish lacking all Kif7 function are viable, in contrast to the peri-natal lethality of mouse kif7 mutants but similar to some Acrocallosal or Joubert syndrome patients who are homozygous for loss of function KIF7 alleles

    Measurement of the Higgs boson production rate in association with top quarks in final states with electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying tau leptons at s√=13TeV

    The rate for Higgs (H) bosons production in association with either one (tH) or two (ttÂŻH) top quarks is measured in final states containing multiple electrons, muons, or tau leptons decaying to hadrons and a neutrino, using proton–proton collisions recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV by the CMS experiment. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137fb−1. The analysis is aimed at events that contain H→WW, H→ττ, or H→ZZ decays and each of the top quark(s) decays either to lepton+jets or all-jet channels. Sensitivity to signal is maximized by including ten signatures in the analysis, depending on the lepton multiplicity. The separation among tH, ttÂŻH, and the backgrounds is enhanced through machine-learning techniques and matrix-element methods. The measured production rates for the ttÂŻH and tH signals correspond to 0.92±0.19(stat)+0.17−0.13(syst) and 5.7±2.7(stat)±3.0(syst) of their respective standard model (SM) expectations. The corresponding observed (expected) significance amounts to 4.7 (5.2) standard deviations for ttÂŻH, and to 1.4 (0.3) for tH production. Assuming that the Higgs boson coupling to the tau lepton is equal in strength to its expectation in the SM, the coupling yt of the Higgs boson to the top quark divided by its SM expectation, Îșt=yt/ySMt, is constrained to be within −0.9<Îșt<−0.7 or 0.7<Îșt<1.1, at 95% confidence level. This result is the most sensitive measurement of the ttÂŻH production rate to date.SCOAP
