A double-layer Boussinesq-type model for highly nonlinear and dispersive waves

Soumis à Proceedings of the Royal Society of London A.We derive and analyze in the framework of the mild-slope approximation a new double-layer Boussinesq-type model which is linearly and nonlinearly accurate up to deep water. Assuming the flow to be irrotational, we formulate the problem in terms of the velocity potential thereby lowering the number of unknowns. The model derivation combines two approaches, namely the method proposed by Agnon et al. (Agnon et al. 1999, J. Fluid Mech., 399 pp. 319-333) and enhanced by Madsen et al. (Madsen et al. 2003, Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A, 459 pp. 1075-1104) which consists in constructing infinite-series Taylor solutions to the Laplace equation, to truncate them at a finite order and to use Padé approximants, and the double-layer approach of Lynett & Liu (Lynett & Liu 2004, Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A, 460 pp. 2637-2669) allowing to lower the order of derivatives. We formulate the model in terms of a static Dirichlet-Neumann operator translated from the free surface to the still-water level, and we derive an approximate inverse of this operator that can be built once and for all. The final model consists of only four equations both in one and two horizontal dimensions, and includes only second-order derivatives, which is a major improvement in comparison with so-called high-order Boussinesq models. A linear analysis of the model is performed and its properties are optimized using a free parameter determining the position of the interface between the two layers. Excellent dispersion and shoaling properties are obtained, allowing the model to be applied up to deep water. Finally, numerical simulations are performed to quantify the nonlinear behaviour of the model, and the results exhibit a nonlinear range of validity reaching deep water areas
BÚSQUEDA DE PRINCIPIOS ACTIVOS ANTIPARASITARIOS EN PLANTAS DE USO TRADICIONAL DE LA AMAZONIA PERUANA. ESPECIAL ENFASIS EN ALCALOIDES INDOLICOS
A fin de evaluar el potencial antimalárico de remedios tradicionales utilizadas en el Perú por las poblaciones indígenas y mestizas del río Nanay en Loreto, fueron entrevistados sobre el uso medicina tradicional para el tratamiento de la malaria. La encuesta se llevó a cabo en seis pueblos y llevaron a la recolección de 59 plantas. 35 extracciones hidro-alcohólico se realizaron en las 21 plantas más citadas. A continuación se ensayaron los extractos para la actividad antiplasmodial in vitro sobre cepa resistente a la cloroquina de Plasmodium falciparum (FCR-3), y también se realizó la prueba de inhibición de ferriprotoporfirina con el fin de asumir propiedades farmacológicas. Los extractos de 9 plantas, en veintiún evaluados, mostraron una actividad antiplasmodial interesante (IC50 <10 µg/ml) y 16 extractos resultaron activos en la prueba de inhibición de la ferriprotoporfirina. Cinco alcaloides oxindólicos y dos alcaloides de tipo plumerano subtipo haplophitina, fueron aislados de plantas medicinales: Aspidosperma rigidum y A. schultesii. Uno de estos compuestos se identificó como un confórmero rotámero transoide de la 18-Oxo-O-metilaspidoalbina que no se describió anteriormente, también fueron determinada la actividad antiparasitaria de los compuestos contra Trypanosoma cruzi y Leishmania infantum
The HHV-6B U20 glycoprotein binds ULBP1, masking it from recognition by NKG2D and interfering with natural killer cell activation
IntroductionHuman Herpesvirus 6B (HHV-6B) impedes host immune responses by downregulating class I MHC molecules (MHC-I), hindering antigen presentation to CD8+ T cells. Downregulation of MHC-I disengages inhibitory receptors on natural killer (NK) cells, resulting in activation and killing of the target cell if NK cell activating receptors such as NKG2D have engaged stress ligands upregulated on the target cells. Previous work has shown that HHV-6B downregulates three MHC-like stress ligands MICB, ULBP1, and ULBP3, which are recognized by NKG2D. The U20 glycoprotein of the related virus HHV-6A has been implicated in the downregulation of ULBP1, but the precise mechanism remains undetermined.MethodsWe set out to investigate the role of HHV-6B U20 in modulating NK cell activity. We used HHV-6B U20 expressed as a recombinant protein or transduced into target cells, as well as HHV-6B infection, to investigate binding interactions with NK cell ligands and receptors and to assess effects on NK cell activation. Small-angle X-ray scattering was used to align molecular models derived from machine-learning approaches.ResultsWe demonstrate that U20 binds directly to ULBP1 with sub-micromolar affinity. Transduction of U20 decreases NKG2D binding to ULBP1 at the cell surface but does not decrease ULBP1 protein levels, either at the cell surface or in toto. HHV-6B infection and soluble U20 have the same effect. Transduction of U20 blocks NK cell activation in response to cell-surface ULBP1. Structural modeling of the U20 – ULBP1 complex indicates some similarities to the m152-RAE1γ complex

the quantum statistical model consisting of identically prepared
-dimensional systems with joint state converges as
to a statistical model consisting of classical and quantum
Gaussian variables with fixed and known covariance matrix, and unknown means
related to the parameters of the density matrix . Remarkably, the limit
model splits into a product of a classical Gaussian with mean equal to the
diagonal parameters, and independent harmonic oscillators prepared in thermal
equilibrium states displaced by an amount proportional to the off-diagonal
elements.
As in the qubits case, LAN is the main ingredient in devising a general two
step adaptive procedure for the optimal estimation of completely unknown
-dimensional quantum states. This measurement strategy shall be described in

The initial education of high school teachers : a critical review of major issues and trends
This paper draws on major research findings in international literature in order to provide a critical
review of a number of key issues and trends in the initial education of high school teachers. Firstly,
this paper contextualizes the prevalent discourse surrounding the field of initial teacher education
(ITE) and explores the effect that this discourse has on the conceptualization of teachers’ work.
Secondly, this paper focuses on the debates regarding the most propitious site for the teacher
education enterprise, the programme structure for ITE, the field placement or practicum, the
relationship between subject study and pedagogy, and the overall effectiveness of teacher education.
The paper concludes by considering the new challenges that the field of initial teacher education
must confront and the implications of such challenges for the ITE curriculum.peer-reviewe
Nucleic acid amplification tests in the diagnosis of tuberculous pleuritis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
BACKGROUND: Conventional tests for tuberculous pleuritis have several limitations. A variety of new, rapid tests such as nucleic acid amplification tests – including polymerase chain reaction – have been evaluated in recent times. We conducted a systematic review to determine the accuracy of nucleic acid amplification (NAA) tests in the diagnosis of tuberculous pleuritis. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis of 38 English and Spanish articles (with 40 studies), identified via searches of six electronic databases, hand searching of selected journals, and contact with authors, experts, and test manufacturers. Sensitivity, specificity, and other measures of accuracy were pooled using random effects models. Summary receiver operating characteristic curves were used to summarize overall test performance. Heterogeneity in study results was formally explored using subgroup analyses. RESULTS: Of the 40 studies included, 26 used in-house ("home-brew") tests, and 14 used commercial tests. Commercial tests had a low overall sensitivity (0.62; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.43, 0.77), and high specificity (0.98; 95% CI 0.96, 0.98). The positive and negative likelihood ratios for commercial tests were 25.4 (95% CI 16.2, 40.0) and 0.40 (95% CI 0.24, 0.67), respectively. All commercial tests had consistently high specificity estimates; the sensitivity estimates, however, were heterogeneous across studies. With the in-house tests, both sensitivity and specificity estimates were significantly heterogeneous. Clinically meaningful summary estimates could not be determined for in-house tests. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that commercial NAA tests may have a potential role in confirming (ruling in) tuberculous pleuritis. However, these tests have low and variable sensitivity and, therefore, may not be useful in excluding (ruling out) the disease. NAA test results, therefore, cannot replace conventional tests; they need to be interpreted in parallel with clinical findings and results of conventional tests. The accuracy of in-house nucleic acid amplification tests is poorly defined because of heterogeneity in study results. The clinical applicability of in-house NAA tests remains unclear
The Role of Ethnic Directors in Corporate Social Responsibility: Does Culture matter? The Cultural Trait Theory Perspectives
This paper investigates the effect of cultural differences between ethnic directors on corporate social responsibility (CSR) of Public Liability Companies (PLCs) in Nigeria. Using the cultural trait theory, the study focuses on how the ethnic directors are influenced when making decisions concerning CSR. Adopting multiple regression analysis of data, the study investigates the three major ethnic groups (Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa) and finds cultural differences between the ethnic directors affect the adoption of CSR. Empirical results indicate that ethnic directors (Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa) were positively and significantly related to CSR. The paper contributes to the corporate governance and CSR debate concerning how ethnic directors’ decisions impact on CSR activities, particularly on the directors who are individualistic and collectivists towards CSR
Commercial Nucleic-Acid Amplification Tests for Diagnosis of Pulmonary Tuberculosis in Respiratory Specimens: Meta-Analysis and Meta-Regression
BACKGROUND: Hundreds of studies have evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of nucleic-acid amplification tests (NAATs) for tuberculosis (TB). Commercial tests have been shown to give more consistent results than in-house assays. Previous meta-analyses have found high specificity but low and highly variable estimates of sensitivity. However, reasons for variability in study results have not been adequately explored. We performed a meta-analysis on the accuracy of commercial NAATs to diagnose pulmonary TB and meta-regression to identify factors that are associated with higher accuracy. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We identified 2948 citations from searching the literature. We found 402 articles that met our eligibility criteria. In the final analysis, 125 separate studies from 105 articles that reported NAAT results from respiratory specimens were included. The pooled sensitivity was 0.85 (range 0.36-1.00) and the pooled specificity was 0.97 (range 0.54-1.00). However, both measures were significantly heterogeneous (p<.001). We performed subgroup and meta-regression analyses to identify sources of heterogeneity. Even after stratifying by type of commercial test, we could not account for the variability. In the meta-regression, the threshold effect was significant (p = .01) and the use of other respiratory specimens besides sputum was associated with higher accuracy. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The sensitivity and specificity estimates for commercial NAATs in respiratory specimens were highly variable, with sensitivity lower and more inconsistent than specificity. Thus, summary measures of diagnostic accuracy are not clinically meaningful. The use of different cut-off values and the use of specimens other than sputum could explain some of the observed heterogeneity. Based on these observations, commercial NAATs alone cannot be recommended to replace conventional tests for diagnosing pulmonary TB. Improvements in diagnostic accuracy, particularly sensitivity, need to be made in order for this expensive technology to be worthwhile and beneficial in low-resource countries
Long-term outcomes of the global tuberculosis and COVID-19 co-infection cohort
Background: Longitudinal cohort data of patients with tuberculosis (TB) and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are lacking. In our global study, we describe long-term outcomes of patients affected by TB and COVID-19. Methods: We collected data from 174 centres in 31 countries on all patients affected by COVID-19 and TB between 1 March 2020 and 30 September 2022. Patients were followed-up until cure, death or end of cohort time. All patients had TB and COVID-19; for analysis purposes, deaths were attributed to TB, COVID-19 or both. Survival analysis was performed using Cox proportional risk-regression models, and the log-rank test was used to compare survival and mortality attributed to TB, COVID-19 or both. Results: Overall, 788 patients with COVID-19 and TB (active or sequelae) were recruited from 31 countries, and 10.8% (n=85) died during the observation period. Survival was significantly lower among patients whose death was attributed to TB and COVID-19 versus those dying because of either TB or COVID-19 alone (p<0.001). Significant adjusted risk factors for TB mortality were higher age (hazard ratio (HR) 1.05, 95% CI 1.03-1.07), HIV infection (HR 2.29, 95% CI 1.02-5.16) and invasive ventilation (HR 4.28, 95% CI 2.34-7.83). For COVID-19 mortality, the adjusted risks were higher age (HR 1.03, 95% CI 1.02-1.04), male sex (HR 2.21, 95% CI 1.24-3.91), oxygen requirement (HR 7.93, 95% CI 3.44-18.26) and invasive ventilation (HR 2.19, 95% CI 1.36-3.53). Conclusions: In our global cohort, death was the outcome in >10% of patients with TB and COVID-19. A range of demographic and clinical predictors are associated with adverse outcomes
