© 2018 Elsevier Ltd The paper identifies the critical competencies affecting Egyptian travel agents’ performance while assessing the negative influence of nepotism on such competencies. To address this aim, the study uses a holistic dual approach employing a multivariate technique using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) and a configuration method through a fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA). Based on a sample of 500 travel agents’ employees, the results show that: (1) none of the competencies is sufficient to drive travel agents’ performance, (2) two distinct configurations of employee competencies are likely to result in high performance, and (3) nepotism has a direct negative influence on some of these competencies. The study holds important implications for both theory and practice

In this thesis, a magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) method was optimized for preconcentration and speciation of chromium prior to its determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometer. The method is based on use of polypyrrole-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles(Fe3O4@PPy) as a magnetic solid phase. Cr(VI) ions in presence of Cr(III) ions were selectively extracted from 0.01 mol L-1 HCl solution using 190 mg Fe3O4@PPy. Both the ions were quantitatively concentrated from 0.001 mol L-1 HCl solutions. 5 mL of 1% thiourine in 2 mol L- 1 HCl is sufficient for quantitative eluation of Cr(VI) ions from Fe3O4@PPy loaded with Cr(VI) ions. The largest sample volume for the extraction was found to be 60 mL. So, preconcentration factor was calculated to be 12. The recovery values for Cr(VI) were higher than 95%

WOS: 000265716900006In this study the effect of superior politics on frontline employees' behavioral and psychological outcomes was examined using data collected from 4- and 5-star hotels in Northern Cyprus. The research hypotheses were tested using LISREL 8.54 through path analysis. The model test results indicated that scarce resources are a significant determinant of superior politics. In addition, path analysis results showed that superior politics and scarce resources have a significant negative association with subordinate performance. The model test findings also demonstrated that superior politics and scarce resources are negatively associated with job satisfaction. This research, however, failed to uncover a significant positive association between subordinate performance and job satisfaction. Similarly, scarce resources and subordinate performance did not have significant associations with job commitment

The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a relation between cytokine concentrations in the milk of nursing mothers and BMJ. Methods: Breast milk samples were collected from breast-feeding mothers of healthy full-term neonates, 40 with BMJ and 40 without jaundice. Milk samples were taken between the second and the fourth postpartum week. The concentrations of interleukin (IL)-1 beta, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha were measured by flow cytometric bead array. Results: There were significant differences between the study groups in terms of IL-1 beta concentrations (P = 0.013). Not statistically significant but similar trends were also seen for IL-10 (P = 0.067) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (P = 0.053) concentrations. However, no significant differences were noted in IL-6 (P = 0.174) and IL-8 (P = 0.285) concentrations. Conclusions: IL-1 beta concentration seems to be increased in milk of mothers whose infants had BMJ. Although the effect of these cytokines on BMJ is unknown, it may cause prolonged jaundice via hepatic uptake, hepatic excretion, conjugation and intestinal absorption

Abubakar A. Mohammed (Aksaray, Yazar)Organizational politics and workplace victimization are social stressors with significant implications on the wellbeing of employees. Applying Job Demand Resources framework, this study examines the impact of favoritism/nepotism, supervisor incivility on employee cynicism, and work withdrawal, and the moderating role of gender. Utilizing a cross-sectional design, data were gathered from frontline employees working in 3-star hotels in Northern Cyprus. Results from structural equation modeling and artificial neural network revealed that: (1) favoritism/nepotism has a positive impact on employee cynicism and work withdrawal; (2) employee cynicism has a positive impact on work withdrawal; (3) employee cynicism mediates the relationship between favoritism/nepotism, and work withdrawal; (4) the impact of employee cynicism on work withdrawal was about 6.7 times stronger for women; (5) the impact of favoritism/nepotism on work withdrawal was about 2.1 times stronger for men. Strategies to reduce this unwanted practices and how to keep employees productive are discussed

Agmatine attenuates intestinal ischemia and reperfusion injury by reducing oxidative stress and inflammatory reaction in rats

Aims Oxidative stress and inflammatory response are major factors causing several tissue injuries in intestinal ischemia and reperfusion (I/R). Agmatine has been reported to attenuate I/R injury of various organs. The present study aims to analyze the possible protective effects of agmatine on intestinal I/R injury in rats. Main methods Four groups were designed: sham control, agmatine-treated control, I/R control, and agmatine-treated I/R groups. IR injury of small intestine was induced by the occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery for half an hour to be followed by a 3-hour-long reperfusion. Agmatine (10 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally before reperfusion period. After 180 min of reperfusion period, the contractile responses to both carbachol and potassium chloride (KCl) were subsequently examined in an isolated-organ bath. Malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), and the activity of myeloperoxidase (MPO) were measured in intestinal tissue. Plasma cytokine levels were determined. The expression of the intestinal inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) was also assessed by immunohistochemistry. Key findings The treatment with agmatine appeared to be significantly effective in reducing the MDA content and MPO activity besides restoring the content of GSH. The treatment also attenuated the histological injury. The increases in the I/R induced expressions of iNOS, IFN-?, and IL-1? were brought back to the sham control levels by the treatment as well. Significance Our findings indicate that the agmatine pretreatment may ameliorate reperfusion induced injury in small intestine mainly due to reducing inflammatory response and oxidative stress. © 2017 Elsevier Inc.2011-20-00-02This work was supported by the research fund provided through Bulent Ecevit University [grant numbers 2011-20-00-02 ].
