Nessa altura, chamaram-lhe a Grande Guerra. O nome dizia tudo! At that time, they called it the ‘Great War’. The name said it all! In four years and three months, the casualty toll amounted to two million deaths in combat, almost ten times more than the number recorded in the long-lasting Napoleonic wars, the longest there was memory of and which lasted 23 years. On February 17, 1916, giving response to an express and urgent request of Britain – in the name of the alliance to requisition all the enemy's ships in Portuguese Ports – to seizure the 6 German vessels moored in the Portuguese ports of Horta and Ponta Delgada, since the dawn of the conflict, which was the climax of a whole set of provocative situations on both sides and where the ‘belligerent neutrality’ of Portugal was constant. On July 4, 1917, the attack of Ponta Delgada by the German submarine – Deutschland – and the defense by the American transportation ship Orion lead the US to become interested in the Azores. The US Navy negotiates directly with London the creation of its own naval base in Ponta Delgada, without Lisbon being informed of the matter. Consequently, there come to surface several ‘advantages’ for the ‘American friend’ and, in parallel, the fears of the government and sidonistas supporters in the archipelago. However, the establishment of the base ‘inside’ the city makes the Azorean metropolis and its population to become impregnated by the ‘perfume’ of the New World, which awakens some autonomist sectors for the strengthening of the Azorean autonomy, perhaps as an American protectorate. In this context, one name stands out – José Bruno Tavares Carreiro. Institutionally, the presence of a General officer from a foreign war navy on home soil – Admiral Herbert O. Dunn – raises a number of questions to the Republican government and some discomfort to the local military authorities. Thus emerges, for the first time, the office of the High Commissioner of the Republic in the Azores, which would be occupied by General José Augusto Simas Machado. Once the war is over, the enormous progress brought by the art of flying is quite visible, and each one tries to use this to the benefit of peace time projects, the desire to cross the oceans as the paramount. As a first step towards a coveted cross of the Atlantic, the Azores naturally emerged

Dissertação para obtenção do grau de Mestre em Genética Molecular e BiomedicinaPeter’s anomaly (PA) is a congenital defect of the anterior chamber of the eye. The aim of this study is molecular characterization of a de novo balanced chromosome translocation [t(11;18)(q23.3;q11.2)] identified in a proband with syndromic form of Peter´s anomaly (ectopia lentis and mild CNS abnormalities). Chromosome breakpoints were identified at nucleotide resolution. The 11q23.3 breakpoint is at position 120,097,868 (genome assembly GRCh37/hg19) within intron 3 of out of first protein homolog gene (OAF) while, 18q11.2 breakpoint in the intergenic region between CTAGE1 and RBBP8 genes, at position 20,220,714. Although OAF is disrupted, its expression level is unchanged in proband´s lymphoblastoid cell line (LCL). Cell adhesion protein Nectin 1 or PVRL1, located 500 kb upstream from 11q23.3 breakpoint, reveal 3.5 fold increase in proband’s LCL. Expression levels of additional genes from breakpoint regions are not significantly different. Furthermore, RT-qPCR confirmed that expression level CYP1B1 from chromosome 2p22.2, and EDIL3 from chromosome 5q14 are significantly changed in proband´s LCL, 16.5 fold decrease and 126 fold increase, respectively. Alterations in CYP1B1 have been reported as PA causing mutations. Therefore, mutation screening of CYP1B1 was performed and no pathogenic mutation was identified in the proband, although, a disease-causing 13 bp, homozygous deletion was identified in a Portuguese patient with PA. In conclusion, we hypothesize that PVRL1 is a candidate gene for at least some of the observed clinical features, which is elicited in mouse models by association of its paralog PVRL3 to lens and other ocular defects involving the ciliary body. Furthermore, the involvement of the POU family domain containing transcription factor (POU2F3) from 11q23.3 and CYP1B1 or EDIL3, localized outside of the breakpoint regions, in the underlying molecular pathogenesis of syndromic PA remains to be determined

Recovery of Software Architecture from Code Repositories

The goal of this work is to create an approach and tool that will a) extract architectural-significant information from code repositories, namely from resources such as dockerfiles and terraform configurations; b) use of the extracted information to synthesise architectural models that will be kept in-sync with the code repositories automatically; c) support the mechanisms that will allow a team to supply any additional details to the architectural model that can't be inferred directly from the repositories. This approach is expected to reduce information redundancy between code and textual documentation, and still allow an integrated and machine-readable view of the overall software architecture of a system.Architecture can be the result of multiple intangibly connected parts spread across source code and other development artifacts. This makes it difficult to describe the architecture without resourcing to auxiliary documentation that puts this information together. Most of the times, this documentation is manually created, render it a costly process which overtime starts to be desregarded and the documentation becomes out of date and sometimes obsolete. Automating the recovery of the architecture using artifacts that are already present on the source code could potentially improve the way documentation is updated and used

We propose to analyze the various Roman core habitat along the lower basin of the Ave river, in the strip over the northwestern Iberia coast, according to their geospatial deployment characteristics, as well as an obvious occupational symmetry, where traffic river, road and sea lines have a preponderance for the economic prosperity of the region, an area rich in agricultural and mineral resources. We are speaking of the area over the Southwest Conventus BracaraAugustanus, Tarraconensis province.

    Regular centralizers of idempotent transformations

Denote by T(X) the semigroup of full transformations on a set X. For ε∈T(X), the centralizer of ε is a subsemigroup of T(X) defined by C(ε)={α∈T(X):αε=εα}. It is well known that C(id X )=T(X) is a regular semigroup. By a theorem proved by J.M. Howie in 1966, we know that if X is finite, then the subsemigroup generated by the idempotents of C(id X ) contains all non-invertible transformations in C(id X ). This paper generalizes this result to C(ε), an arbitrary regular centralizer of an idempotent transformation ε∈T(X), by describing the subsemigroup generated by the idempotents of C(ε). As a corollary we obtain that the subsemigroup generated by the idempotents of a regular C(ε) contains all non-invertible transformations in C(ε) if and only if ε is the identity or a constant transformation

The present works intends to represent a further step in the knowledge of timber log-houses through an experimental approach, from which only few information is available. The main part of the experimental work is based on in-plane static tests conducted on timber log walls with distinct transversal stiffness, two vertical compression levels and two values of slenderness. Monotonic and cyclic tests were performed according to EN 12512:2001. The formers were performed to define the elastic slip values and assessment of the failure mechanisms while the lasts allowed evaluating impairment of strength, to measure the ductility and to quantify the energy dissipation. In a first step research, an extensive characterization of the timber logs was made. The connection between the first timber log and the basement was also evaluated.(undefined

This paper aims to contribute to the knowledge of the building system "Log-house” through an extensive experimental analysis and numerical analysis. The experimental campaign, performed previously, aimed of studying the in-plane behavior of log walls when subjected to monotonic and cyclic loads, in accordance with EN 12512:2001. Moreover, a case study concerning a house characteristic of the "Rusticasa" system was analyzed considering the distribution of seismic forces according to: a) the area of influence of each wall, and b) the stiffness of each wall. Analyses carried out include some resistance checks, particularly in terms of the connection to the foundation and at the crossing between orthogonal walls, which are not checked for all walls and, therefore, some suggestions are presented to improve the safety of the structural system.Rusticas
