    Application d'algorithmes prédictifs à l'identification de niches écoculturelles des populations du passé : approche ethnoarchéologique

    The geographic distribution of human populations is the result of both historical contingency and environmental factors. This study identifies culture-environment relations for well-documented present-day and historic populations in order to evaluate whether the same phenomena operated inprehistoric contexts, which are only known from archaeological sites. After reviewing the different concepts used to describe the ecological space occupied by a species (or specific population), it is shown that the niche concept is well-suited for identifying and measuring environmental factors that can influence the distribution of a culture at a particular place and time. In order to better understand the potential distributions of present and past cultures, this study employs the method known aseco-cultural niche modeling (ECNM). ECNM uses predictive algorithms along with occurrence and environmental data in order to examine the possible influences of environmental factors on cultural trajectories. The results presented here are derived from an optimized ECNM approach that permits one to obtain high-resolution environmental data, and that also combines niche predictions by taking into account the performance of the various employed predictive algorithms.The effectiveness of this approach is ensured by the use of reliable occurrence data for both the present-day and historic case studies. Finally, statistical evaluations of multiple contemporaneous niches, as well as successive ones across multiple climatic phases, allow them to be placed in ecological space and examined with respect to cultural diversity, ecological risk, competition, and evolutionary and population dynamics.La géographie des groupes humains résulte d’événements historiques culturels et environnementaux. Notre démarche consiste à identifier des relations cultures/environnements dans des populations actuelles ou historiques bien documentées pour ensuite déceler l’éventuelle présence de phénomènes similaires dans des populations anciennes dont seuls les vestiges archéologiques sont connus. Après avoir passé en revue différents concepts permettant de décrire l’espace écologique occupé par une espèce (ou une population déterminée par un trait spécifique), nous déduisons que le concept de niche est idéal pour mesurer les facteurs environnementaux qui peuvent influencer l’établissement d’une culture en un lieu à une période donnée. Afin d’apprécier les distributions géographiques potentielles de cultures du présent et du passé, nous utilisons la modélisation de niches écoculturelles (ECNM). L’ECNM utilise des algorithmes prédictifs ainsi que des données d’occurrences et environnementales afin d’examiner les possibles influences des facteurs environnementaux dans les trajectoires évolutives des cultures. Nous présentons des résultats issus d’une optimisation de l’ECNM qui consiste à obtenir des données environnementales à très hautes résolutions spatiale et temporelle puis à combiner des prédictions de niche en tenant compte des performances des différents algorithmes prédictifs utilisés. La validité de la méthode que nous proposons est assurée par la fiabilité des occurrences que nous utilisons dans nos référentiels actualiste et historique. Enfin l’analyse statistique de plusieurs niches contemporaines, ou se succédant dans plusieurs phases climatiques, nous permet de les positionner dans l’espace écologique et de discuter de diversité culturelle, de risque écologique, de compétition, de dynamique évolutive et de peuplement

    Environmental parameters constrain the distributions of plant and animal species. A key question is to what extent does environment influence human behavior. Decreasing linguistic diversity from the equator towards the poles suggests that ecological factors influence linguistic geography. However, attempts to quantify the role of environmental factors in shaping linguistic diversity remain inconclusive. To this end, we apply Ecological Niche Modelling methods to present-day language diversity in New Guinea. We define an Eco-Linguistic Niche (ELN) as the range of environmental conditions present in the territory of a population speaking a specific language or group of languages characterized by common language traits. In order to reconstruct the ELNs, we used Papuan and Austronesian language groups, transformed their geographical distributions into occurrence data, assembled available environmental data for New Guinea, and applied predictive architectures developed in the field of ecology to these data. We find no clear relationship between linguistic diversity and ELNs. This is particularly true when linguistic diversity is examined at the level of language groups. Language groups are variably dependent on environment and generally share their ELN with other language groups. This variability suggests that population dynamics, migration, linguistic drift, and socio-cultural mechanisms must be taken into consideration in order to better understand the myriad factors that shape language diversity.publishedVersio

    Evaluating Viking eco-cultural niche variability between the Medieval Climate Optimum and the Little Ice Age: a feasibility study

    International audienceIn the northern Atlantic, Norse agricultural and pastoral practices flourished from the 9th to the 13th century, after which Viking occupation of these regions abruptly declined and eventually disappeared towards the beginning of the 15th century. In this study, in order to evaluate the possible role of climatic variability on Viking settlement of these regions, we used the Genetic Algorithm for Rule-Set Prediction (GARP) to reconstruct the Viking eco-cultural niches during the end of the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) and the beginning of the Little Ice Age (LIA).These reconstructions demonstrate that the application of ECNM to this time period and Viking settlement dynamics is both feasible and relevant. Furthermore, preliminary results suggest that climate and environmental change played prominent roles in the abandonment of Greenland by Viking populations and are consistent with available historical accounts. Our results encourage us pursue further analyses with the use of more precise paleoclimatic and archaeological data in order to better understand the role of environmental change in the disappearance of Viking culture from regions of the northern Atlantic

    Nernst and Seebeck Coefficients of the Cuprate SuperconductorYBa2_2Cu3_3O6.67_{6.67}: A Study of Fermi Surface Reconstruction

    The Seebeck and Nernst coefficients SS and ν\nu of the cuprate superconductor YBa2_2Cu3_3Oy_y (YBCO) were measured in a single crystal with doping p=0.12p = 0.12 in magnetic fields up to H = 28 T. Down to T=9 K, ν\nu becomes independent of field by H30H \simeq 30 T, showing that superconducting fluctuations have become negligible. In this field-induced normal state, S/TS/T and ν/T\nu/T are both large and negative in the T0T \to 0 limit, with the magnitude and sign of S/TS/T consistent with the small electron-like Fermi surface pocket detected previously by quantum oscillations and the Hall effect. The change of sign in S(T)S(T) at T50T \simeq 50 K is remarkably similar to that observed in La2x_{2-x}Bax_xCuO4_4, La2xy_{2-x-y}Ndy_ySrx_xCuO4_4 and La2xy_{2-x-y}Euy_ySrx_xCuO4_4, where it is clearly associated with the onset of stripe order. We propose that a similar density-wave mechanism causes the Fermi surface reconstruction in YBCO.Comment: Final version accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Lett.     Modern society is now demanding “greener” materials due to depleting fossil fuels and increasing environmental awareness. In the near future, industries will need to become more resource-conscious by making greater use of available renewable and sustainable raw materials. In this context, agro-forestry and related industries can indeed contribute to solve many resource challenges for society and suppliers in the near future. Thus, cellulose can be predicted to become an important resource for materials due to its abundance and versatility as a biopolymer. Cellulose is found in many different forms and applications. However, the dissolution and regeneration of cellulose are key (and challenging) aspects in many potential applications. This chapter is divided into two parts: (i) achievements in the field of dissolution and regeneration of cellulose including solvents and underlying mechanisms of dissolution; and (ii) state-of-the-art production of value-added materials and their applications including manmade textile fibers, hydrogels, aerogels, and all-cellulose composites, where the latter is given special attention

    Laser ablation (LA) and spark discharge (SD) techniques are commonly used for nanoparticle (NP) formation. The produced NPs have found numerous applications in such areas as electronics, biomedicine, textile production, etc. Previous studies provide us information about the amount of NPs, their size distribution, and possible applications. On one hand, the main advantage of the LA method is in the possibilities of changing laser parameters and background conditions and to ablate materials with complicated stoichiometry. On the other hand, the major advantage of the SD technique is in the possibility of using several facilities in parallel to increase the yield of nanoparticles. To optimize these processes, we consider different stages involved and analyze the resulting plasma and nanoparticle (NP) parameters. Based on the performed calculations, we analyze nanoparticle properties, such as mean size and mean density. The performed analysis (shows how the experimental conditions are connected with the resulted nanoparticle characteristics in agreement with several previous experiments. Cylindrical plasma column expansion and return are shown to govern primary nanoparticle formation in spark discharge, whereas hemispherical shock describes quite well this process for nanosecond laser ablation at atmospheric pressure. In addition, spark discharge leads to the oscillations in plasma properties, whereas monotonous behavior is characteristic for nanosecond laser ablation. Despite the difference in plasma density and time evolutions calculated for both phenomena, after well-defined delays, similar critical nuclei have been shown to be formed by both techniques. This result is attributed to the fact that whereas larger evaporation rate is typical for nanosecond laser ablation, a mixture of vapor and background gas determines the supersaturation in the case of spark

    The EEE corpus: socio-affective "glue" cues in elderly-robot interactions in a Smart Home with the EmOz platform

    International audienceThe aim of this preliminary study of feasibility is to give a glance at interactions in a Smart Home prototype between the elderly and a companion robot that is having some socio-affective language primitives as the only vector of communication. The paper particularly focuses on the methodology and the scenario made to collect a spontaneous corpus of human-robot interactions. Through a Wizard of Oz platform (EmOz), which was specifically developed for this issue, a robot is introduced as an intermediary between the technological environment and some elderly who have to give vocal commands to the robot to control the Smart Home. The robot vocal productions increases progressively by adding prosodic levels: (1) no speech, (2) pure prosodic mouth noises supposed to be the "glue's" tools, (3) lexicons with supposed "glue" prosody and (4) subject's commands imitations with supposed "glue" prosody. The elderly subjects' speech behaviours confirm the hypothesis that the socio-affective "glue" effect increase towards the prosodic levels, especially for socio-isolated people. The actual corpus is still on recording process and is motivated to collect data from socio-isolated elderly in real need
