The aim of this study was to characterize the evolution of ROM and strength at the upper limb and analyze their relationship with functional independence during intensive rehabilitation. Data ROM, strength, spasticity, secondary impairments, functional independence) from 197 participants with SCI were collected at admission and discharge from intensive rehabilitation and were analyzed with descriptive statistics and multivariate analyses (regressions, ANOVA). Specific association analyses were used to determine the level of association between ROM, strength and independent variables such as pain, spasticity and secondary impairments.
Lesser deficit in ROM was observed in participants with paraplegia compared to those with tetraplegia. The deficit in individuals with tetraplegia was larger to an extent that most of them did not reach normality in ROM at shoulder joint. Surprisingly, individuals with less severe injury according to the American Spinal Injury Association classification (ASIA D) showed larger deficit of ROM than expected. Joint pain was related to reduce ROM, particularly in participants with ASIA D lesion. Values of muscle strength in individuals with more severe tetraplegia (ASIA ABC) are lower than the ones observed in individuals with less severe injury (ASIA D). Overall, strength and ROM were correlated, except for medial rotation movement. ROM, strength, and secondary impairments are the major determinants of functional independence.
In conclusion, shoulder joint was the most affected joint of the upper limb, and, despite of significant gains of ROM, abnormalities were greater than expected. Strength and some secondary impairment were related in loss of ROM and functional independence throughout rehabilitation. More study will be needed to understand the medial rotation movement at the shoulder that seems to evolve differently from other movements, and to determine whether or not changes observed during rehabilitation are maintained over time

Elizabeth Spencer - b. 1921
Elizabeth Spencer has won loyal readers and prestigious literary prizes for her many short stories, collections of short fiction, and novels. Praised by Eudora Welty for her âcool detachment,â Spencer evokes the family and community relationships of the American South with certainty and compassion born of her personal knowledge as a native of Mississippi and a long-time resident of North Carolina. Drawing also on her experiences in Italy and Canada, Spencer demonstrates the range of her socia..
SPHERE IRDIS and IFS astrometric strategy and calibration
We present the current results of the astrometric characterization of the VLT
planet finder SPHERE over 2 years of on-sky operations. We first describe the
criteria for the selection of the astrometric fields used for calibrating the
science data: binaries, multiple systems, and stellar clusters. The analysis
includes measurements of the pixel scale and the position angle with respect to
the North for both near-infrared subsystems, the camera IRDIS and the integral
field spectrometer IFS, as well as the distortion for the IRDIS camera. The
IRDIS distortion is shown to be dominated by an anamorphism of 0.60+/-0.02%
between the horizontal and vertical directions of the detector, i.e. 6 mas at
1". The anamorphism is produced by the cylindrical mirrors in the common path
structure hence common to all three SPHERE science subsystems (IRDIS, IFS, and
ZIMPOL), except for the relative orientation of their field of view. The
current estimates of the pixel scale and North angle for IRDIS are
12.255+/-0.009 milliarcseconds/pixel for H2 coronagraphic images and
-1.75+/-0.08 deg. Analyses of the IFS data indicate a pixel scale of
7.46+/-0.02 milliarcseconds/pixel and a North angle of -102.18+/-0.13 deg. We
finally discuss plans for providing astrometric calibration to the SPHERE users
outside the instrument consortium.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 3 table
Deep imaging of ÎČ Pictoris at Lâ: asymmetries in the disc and constraints on planets
We demonstrate here the potential of VLT/NaCo at
Lâ (3.8ÎŒm) in Angular Differential Imaging (ADI). We detect
the ÎČ Pictoris disc above 5Ï between 0.4ââ and 3.8ââ, after
combining data from 7 epochs or 3.1 years. To avoid the
smearing of the planet due to its orbital motion within this
time span (green arrow), we subtracted the planet from the
7 datasets. We used a star subtraction technique based on
PCA (Soummer et al. 2012) and corrected for ADI biases by
iterating. We implemented a forward modeling approach to
constrain the dust distribution
Paternal age explains a major portion of de novo germline mutation rate variability in healthy individuals
De novo mutations (DNM) are an important source of rare variants and are increasingly being linked to the development of many diseases. Recently, the paternal age effect has been the focus of a number of studies that attempt to explain the observation that increasing paternal age increases the risk for a number of diseases. Using disease-free familial quartets we show that there is a strong positive correlation between paternal age and germline DNM in healthy subjects. We also observed that germline CNVs do not follow the same trend, suggesting a different mechanism. Finally, we observed that DNM were not evenly distributed across the genome, which adds support to the existence of DNM hotspots
