    Translation as a new strategy of creating audio description was proposed and investigated by several researchers and adopted by professional practice as a costcutting strategy that produces a good quality audio description. Theory and practice have at least one thing in common ā€“ AD translation is performed exclusively from English into other languages. This article explores the possibility of translating into English AD scripts created locally for non-English-language films. More specifically ā€“ based on a case study of the Polish award-winning film Ida (dir. Pawlikowski, 2013) it aims to get some insight on if and what strategies would needed to be applied in order to render the cultural references from the Polish AD script into English

    Antisense Suppression of the Small Chloroplast Protein CP12 in Tobacco Alters Carbon Partitioning and Severely Restricts Growth

    Abstract The thioredoxin-regulated chloroplast protein CP12 forms a multienzyme complex with the Calvin-Benson cycle enzymes phosphoribulokinase (PRK) and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH). PRK and GAPDH are inactivated when present in this complex, a process shown in vitro to be dependent upon oxidized CP12. The importance of CP12 in vivo in higher plants, however, has not been investigated. Here, antisense suppression of CP12 in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) was observed to impact on NAD-induced PRK and GAPDH complex formation but had little effect on enzyme activity. Additionally, only minor changes in photosynthetic carbon fixation were observed. Despite this, antisense plants displayed changes in growth rates and morphology, including dwarfism and reduced apical dominance. The hypothesis that CP12 is essential to separate oxidative pentose phosphate pathway activity from Calvin-Benson cycle activity, as proposed in cyanobacteria, was tested. No evidence was found to support this role in tobacco. Evidence was seen, however, for a restriction to malate valve capacity, with decreases in NADP-malate dehydrogenase activity (but not protein levels) and pyridine nucleotide content. Antisense repression of CP12 also led to significant changes in carbon partitioning, with increased carbon allocation to the cell wall and the organic acids malate and fumarate and decreased allocation to starch and soluble carbohydrates. Severe decreases were also seen in 2-oxoglutarate content, a key indicator of cellular carbon sufficiency. The data presented here indicate that in tobacco, CP12 has a role in redox-mediated regulation of carbon partitioning from the chloroplast and provides strong in vivo evidence that CP12 is required for normal growth and development in plants.</jats:p

However, after novel genotype 3 of parvovirus 4 was found in 2 patients with no parenteral risks, we tested infants in Ghana. A viremia rate of 8.6% over 2 years indicates that this infection is common in children in Africa

    The Aortic-Femoral Arterial Stiffness Gradient: An Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study

    Background: The aortic to femoral arterial stiffness gradient (af-SG) may be a novel measure of arterial health and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, but its association with CVD risk factors and CVD status, and whether or not they differ from the referent measure, carotid-femoral pulse-wave velocity (cfPWV), is not known. Method: Accordingly, we compared the associations of the af-SG and cfPWV with (i) age and traditional CVD risk factors and (ii) CVD status. We evaluated 4183 older-aged (75.2 Ā± 5.0 years) men and women in the community-based Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study. cfPWV and femoral-ankle PWV (faPWV) were measured using an automated cardiovascular screening device. The af-SG was calculated as faPWV divided by cfPWV. Associations of af-SG and cfPWV with age, CVD risk factors (age, BMI, blood pressure, heart rate, glucose and blood lipid levels) and CVD status (hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke) were determined using linear and logistic regression analyses. Results: (i) the af-SG and cfPWV demonstrated comparable associations with age and CVD risk factors, except BMI. (ii) a low af-SG was associated with diabetes, coronary heart disease, heart failure and stroke, whilst a high cfPWV was only associated with diabetes. Conclusion: Although future studies are necessary to confirm clinical utility, the af-SG is a promising tool that may provide a unique picture of hemodynamic integration and identification of CVD risk when compared with cfPWV

    Associations of lower-limb atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis with cardiovascular risk factors and disease in older adults:The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study

    BACKGROUND & AIMS Atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis contribute to vascular aging and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Both processes can be assessed simply in the lower-limbs and reflect systemic pathology. However, only atherosclerosis is routinely assessed, typically via ankle-brachial index (ABI). Arteriosclerosis can be assessed using femoral-ankle pulse wave velocity (faPWV), but no studies have identified whether ABI and faPWV similarly associate with overt CVD and risk factors, nor whether faPWV confers additional information. The aims of this study were to, (i) Compare associations of ABI and faPWV with traditional CVD risk factors, including age, sex, systolic blood pressure (SBP), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), total cholesterol (TC), smoking, and diabetes; and, ii) Determine the independent and additive associations of ABI and faPWV with a composite measure of prevalent CVD. METHODS We evaluated ABI and faPWV in 4,330 older-aged (75.3Ā±5.0 years) adults using an oscillometric screening device. Associations between ABI and faPWV with CVD risk factors and CVD were determined using mixed-model linear- and logistic-regression. RESULTS ABI and faPWV were associated with age, HDL, and smoking. ABI was associated with sex, TC, diabetes. faPWV was associated with SBP. Both ABI and faPWV were inversely associated with CVD. Low ABI (ā‰¤0.9 vs. >0.9) and low faPWV (ā‰¤9.94 vs. >9.94) increased the odds of CVD by 2.41-fold (95% CI:1.85,3.17) and 1.46-fold (95% CI:1.23,1.74), respectively. The inverse association between faPWV and CVD was independent of ABI and CVD risk factors. CONCLUSION ABI and faPWV, measures of lower-limb atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis, are independently associated with CVD risk factors and prevalent CVD. Assessment of faPWV may confer additional risk information beyond ABI

    The structure and evolution of quasi-stars

    The existence of bright quasars at high redshifts implies that supermassive black holes were able to form in the early Universe. Though a number of mechanisms to achieve this have been proposed, none yet stands out. A recent suggestion is the formation of quasi-stars, initially stellar-mass black holes accreting from hydrostatic giant-like envelopes of gas, formed from the monolithic collapse of pre-galactic gas clouds. In this work, we modify the Cambridge STARS stellar evolution package to construct detailed models of the evolution of these objects. We find that, in all of our models, the black hole inside the envelope is able to reach slightly more than one-tenth of the total mass of the system before hydrostatic equilibrium breaks down. This breakdown occurs after a few million years of evolution. We show that the mechanism which causes the hydrostatic evolution to end is present in polytropic models. We also show that the solutions are highly sensitive to the size of the inner boundary radius and that no physical solutions exist if the inner boundary is chosen to be less than about 0.3 of the Bondi radius.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures.     Neuregulin signaling on glucose transport in muscle cells

    Neuregulin-1, a growth factor that potentiates myogenesis induces glucose transport through translocation of glucose transporters, in an additive manner to insulin, in muscle cells. In this study, we examined the signaling pathway required for a recombinant active neuregulin-1 isoform (rhHeregulin-Ī²1, 177-244, HRG) to stimulate glucose uptake in L6E9 myotubes. The stimulatory effect of HRG required binding to ErbB3 in L6E9 myotubes. PI3K activity is required for HRG action in both muscle cells and tissue. In L6E9 myotubes, HRG stimulated PKBĪ±, PKBĪ³, and PKCĪ¶ activities. TPCK, an inhibitor of PDK1, abolished both HRG- and insulin-induced glucose transport. To assess whether PKB was necessary for the effects of HRG on glucose uptake, cells were infected with adenoviruses encoding dominant negative mutants of PKBĪ±. Dominant negative PKB reduced PKB activity and insulin-stimulated glucose transport but not HRG-induced glucose transport. In contrast, transduction of L6E9 myotubes with adenoviruses encoding a dominant negative kinase-inactive PKCĪ¶ abolished both HRG- and insulin-stimulated glucose uptake. In soleus muscle, HRG induced PKCĪ¶, but not PKB phosphorylation. HRG also stimulated the activity of p70S6K, p38MAPK, and p42/p44MAPK and inhibition of p42/p44MAPK partially repressed HRG action on glucose uptake. HRG did not affect AMPKĪ±1 or AMPKĪ±2 activities. In all, HRG stimulated glucose transport in muscle cells by activation of a pathway that requires PI3K, PDK1, and PKCĪ¶, but not PKB, and that shows cross-talk with the MAPK pathway. The PI3K, PDK1, and PKCĪ¶ pathway can be considered as an alternative mechanism, independent of insulin, to induce glucose uptake

    Neutron star mergers might not be the only source of r-process elements in the Milky Way

    Probing the origin of r-process elements in the universe represents a multidisciplinary challenge. We review the observational evidence that probes the properties of r-process sites, and address them using galactic chemical evolution simulations, binary population synthesis models, and nucleosynthesis calculations. Our motivation is to define which astrophysical sites have significantly contributed to the total mass of r-process elements present in our Galaxy. We found discrepancies with the neutron star (NSā€“NS) merger scenario. When we assume that they are the only site, the decreasing trend of [Eu/Fe] at [Fe/H] > āˆ’1 in the disk of the Milky Way cannot be reproduced while accounting for the delay-time distribution (DTD) of coalescence times (āˆt āˆ’1) derived from short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and population synthesis models. Steeper DTD functions (āˆt āˆ’1.5) or power laws combined with a strong burst of mergers before the onset of supernovae (SNe) Ia can reproduce the [Eu/Fe] trend, but this scenario is inconsistent with the similar fraction of short GRBs and SNe Ia occurring in early-type galaxies, and it reduces the probability of detecting GW170817 in an early-type galaxy. One solution is to assume an additional production site of Eu that would be active in the early universe, but would fade away with increasing metallicity. If this is correct, this additional site could be responsible for roughly 50% of the Eu production in the early universe before the onset of SNe Ia. Rare classes of supernovae could be this additional r-process source, but hydrodynamic simulations still need to ensure the conditions for a robust r-process pattern

    The Most Metal-Poor Stars. IV : The Two Populations with [Fe/H] <~ -3.0

    We discuss the carbon-normal and carbon-rich populations of Galactic halo stars having [Fe/H] lsim -3.0, utilizing chemical abundances from high-resolution, high signal-to-noise model-atmosphere analyses. The C-rich population represents ~28% of stars below [Fe/H] = -3.1, with the present C-rich sample comprising 16 CEMP-no stars, and two others with [Fe/H] ~ -5.5 and uncertain classification. The population is O-rich ([O/Fe] gsim +1.5); the light elements Na, Mg, and Al are enhanced relative to Fe in half the sample; and for Z > 20 (Ca) there is little evidence for enhancements relative to solar values. These results are best explained in terms of the admixing and processing of material from H-burning and He-burning regions as achieved by nucleosynthesis in zero-heavy-element models in the literature of "mixing and fallback" supernovae (SNe); of rotating, massive, and intermediate-mass stars; and of Type II SNe with relativistic jets. The available (limited) radial velocities offer little support for the C-rich stars with [Fe/H] < -3.1 being binary. More data are required before one could conclude that binarity is key to an understanding of this population. We suggest that the C-rich and C-normal populations result from two different gas cooling channels in the very early universe of material that formed the progenitors of the two populations. The first was cooling by fine-structure line transitions of C II and O I (to form the C-rich population); the second, while not well defined (perhaps dust-induced cooling?), led to the C-normal group. In this scenario, the C-rich population contains the oldest stars currently observed.Peer reviewe

    Effectiveness of a primary care-based intervention to reduce sitting time in overweight and obese patients (SEDESTACTIV): a randomized controlled trial; rationale and study design

    Background: There is growing evidence suggesting that prolonged sitting has negative effects on people's weight, chronic diseases and mortality. Interventions to reduce sedentary time can be an effective strategy to increase daily energy expenditure. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a six-month primary care intervention to reduce daily of sitting time in overweight and mild obese sedentary patients. Method/Design: The study is a randomized controlled trial (RCT). Professionals from thirteen primary health care centers (PHC) will randomly invite to participate mild obese or overweight patients of both gender, aged between 25 and 65 years old, who spend 6 hours at least daily sitting. A total of 232 subjects will be randomly allocated to an intervention (IG) and control group (CG) (116 individuals each group). In addition, 50 subjects with fibromyalgia will be included. Primary outcome is: (1) sitting time using the activPAL device and the Marshall questionnaire. The following parameters will be also assessed: (2) sitting time in work place (Occupational Sitting and Physical Activity Questionnaire), (3) health-related quality of life (EQ-5D), (4) evolution of stage of change (Prochaska and DiClemente's Stages of Change Model), (5) physical inactivity (catalan version of Brief Physical Activity Assessment Tool), (6) number of steps walked (pedometer and activPAL), (7) control based on analysis (triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, glycemia and, glycated haemoglobin in diabetic patients) and (8) blood pressure and anthropometric variables. All parameters will be assessed pre and post intervention and there will be a follow up three, six and twelve months after the intervention. A descriptive analysis of all variables and a multivariate analysis to assess differences among groups will be undertaken. Multivariate analysis will be carried out to assess time changes of dependent variables. All the analysis will be done under the intention to treat principle. Discussion: If the SEDESTACTIV intervention shows its effectiveness in reducing sitting time, health professionals would have a low-cost intervention tool for sedentary overweight and obese patients management
