GBM heterogeneity as a function of variable epidermal growth factor receptor variant III activity.
Abnormal activation of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) due to a deletion of exons 2-7 of EGFR (EGFRvIII) is a common alteration in glioblastoma (GBM). While this alteration can drive gliomagenesis, tumors harboring EGFRvIII are heterogeneous. To investigate the role for EGFRvIII activation in tumor phenotype we used a neural progenitor cell-based murine model of GBM driven by EGFR signaling and generated tumor progenitor cells with high and low EGFRvIII activation, pEGFRHi and pEGFRLo. In vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro studies suggested a direct association between EGFRvIII activity and increased tumor cell proliferation, decreased tumor cell adhesion to the extracellular matrix, and altered progenitor cell phenotype. Time-lapse confocal imaging of tumor cells in brain slice cultures demonstrated blood vessel co-option by tumor cells and highlighted differences in invasive pattern. Inhibition of EGFR signaling in pEGFRHi promoted cell differentiation and increased cell-matrix adhesion. Conversely, increased EGFRvIII activation in pEGFRLo reduced cell-matrix adhesion. Our study using a murine model for GBM driven by a single genetic driver, suggests differences in EGFR activation contribute to tumor heterogeneity and aggressiveness
Streaming Motions Towards the Supermassive Black Hole in NGC 1097
We have used GMOS-IFU and high resolution HST-ACS observations to map, in
unprecedented detail, the gas velocity field and structure within the 0.7 kpc
circumnuclear ring of the SBb LINER/Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 1097. We find clear
evidence of radial streaming motions associated with spiral structures leading
to the unresolved (<3.5 parsecs) nucleus, which we interpret as part of the
fueling chain by which gas is transported to the nuclear starburst and

Finding the Needles in the Haystacks: High-Fidelity Models of the Modern and Archean Solar System for Simulating Exoplanet Observations
We present two state-of-the-art models of the solar system, one corresponding
to the present day and one to the Archean Eon 3.5 billion years ago. Each model
contains spatial and spectral information for the star, the planets, and the
interplanetary dust, extending to 50 AU from the sun and covering the
wavelength range 0.3 to 2.5 micron. In addition, we created a spectral image
cube representative of the astronomical backgrounds that will be seen behind
deep observations of extrasolar planetary systems, including galaxies and Milky
Way stars. These models are intended as inputs to high-fidelity simulations of
direct observations of exoplanetary systems using telescopes equipped with
high-contrast capability. They will help improve the realism of observation and
instrument parameters that are required inputs to statistical observatory yield
calculations, as well as guide development of post-processing algorithms for
telescopes capable of directly imaging Earth-like planets.Comment: Accepted for publication in PAS
Star formation and gas inflows in the OH Megamaser galaxy IRAS03056+2034
We have obtained observations of the OH Megamaser galaxy IRAS03056+0234 using
Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) Integral Field Unit (IFU), Very Large
Array (VLA) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The HST data reveals spiral arms
containing knots of emission associated to star forming regions. The GMOS-IFU
data cover the spectral range of 4500 to 7500 \AA\ at a velocity resolution of
90 km s and spatial resolution of 506 pc. The emission-line flux
distributions reveal a ring of star forming regions with radius of 786 pc
centred at the nucleus of the galaxy, with an ionized gas mass of 1.2
10M, an ionizing photon luminosity of log Q[H]=53.8 and a
star formation rate of 4.9 M yr. The emission-line ratios and
radio emission suggest that the gas at the nuclear region is excited by both
starburst activity and an active galactic nucleus. The gas velocity fields are
partially reproduced by rotation in the galactic plane, but show, in addition,
excess redshifts to the east of the nucleus, consistent with gas inflows
towards the nucleus, with velocity of 45 km s and a mass inflow
rate of 7.710 M yr.Comment: To be published in MNRA
Exact Four-Dimensional Dyonic Black Holes and Bertotti-Robinson Spacetimes in String Theory
Conformal field theories corresponding to two-dimensional electrically
charged black holes and to two-dimensional anti-de Sitter space with a
covariantly constant electric field are simply constructed as WZW
coset models. The two-dimensional electrically charged black holes are related
by Kaluza-Klein reduction to the 2+1-dimensional rotating black hole of
Banados, Teitelboim and Zanelli, and our construction is correspondingly
related to its realization as a WZW model. Four-dimensional spacetime solutions
are obtained by tensoring these two-dimensional theories with
coset models. These describe a family of dyonic black holes and the

An outflow in the Seyfert ESO 362-G18 revealed by Gemini-GMOS/IFU Observations
We present two-dimensional stellar and gaseous kinematics of the inner 0.7
1.2 kpc of the Seyfert galaxy ESO 362-G18, derived from optical
spectra obtained with the GMOS/IFU on the Gemini South telescope at a spatial
resolution of 170 pc and spectral resolution of 36 km s. ESO
362-G18 is a strongly perturbed galaxy of morphological type Sa or S0/a, with a
minor merger approaching along the NE direction. Previous studies have shown
that the [OIII] emission shows a fan-shaped extension of 10\arcsec\
to the SE. We detect the [OIII] doublet, [NII] and H emission lines
throughout our field of view. The stellar kinematics is dominated by circular
motions in the galaxy plane, with a kinematic position angle of
137. The gas kinematics is also dominated by rotation, with
kinematic position angles ranging from 122 to 139. A
double-Gaussian fit to the [OIII]5007 and H lines, which
have the highest signal to noise ratios of the emission lines, reveal two
kinematic components: (1) a component at lower radial velocities which we
interpret as gas rotating in the galactic disk; and (2) a component with line
of sight velocities 100-250 km s higher than the systemic velocity,
interpreted as originating in the outflowing gas within the AGN ionization
cone. We estimate a mass outflow rate of 7.4 10 M
yr in the SE ionization cone (this rate doubles if we assume a biconical
configuration), and a mass accretion rate on the supermassive black hole (SMBH)
of 2.2 10 M yr. The total ionized gas mass
within 84 pc of the nucleus is 3.3 10 M; infall
velocities of 34 km s in this gas would be required to feed both
the outflow and SMBH accretion.Comment: 18 pages, 14 figure
Meningococcal disease in children in Merseyside, England:a 31 year descriptive study
Meningococcal disease (MCD) is the leading infectious cause of death in early childhood in the United Kingdom, making it a public health priority. MCD most commonly presents as meningococcal meningitis (MM), septicaemia (MS), or as a combination of the two syndromes (MM/MS). We describe the changing epidemiology and clinical presentation of MCD, and explore associations with socioeconomic status and other risk factors. A hospital-based study of children admitted to a tertiary children's centre, Alder Hey Children's Foundation Trust, with MCD, was undertaken between 1977 to 2007 (n = 1157). Demographics, clinical presentations, microbiological confirmation and measures of deprivation were described. The majority of cases occurred in the 1-4 year age group and there was a dramatic fall in serogroup C cases observed with the introduction of the meningococcal C conjugate (MCC) vaccine. The proportion of MS cases increased over the study period, from 11% in the first quarter to 35% in the final quarter. Presentation with MS (compared to MM) and serogroup C disease (compared to serogroup B) were demonstrated to be independent risk factors for mortality, with odds ratios of 3.5 (95% CI 1.18 to 10.08) and 2.18 (95% CI 1.26 to 3.80) respectively. Cases admitted to Alder Hey were from a relatively more deprived population (mean Townsend score 1.25, 95% CI 1.09 to 1.41) than the Merseyside reference population. Our findings represent one of the largest single-centre studies of MCD. The presentation of MS is confirmed to be a risk factor of mortality from MCD. Our study supports the association between social deprivation and MCD
