Non-Fermi-liquid behavior in the Kondo lattices induced by peculiarities of magnetic ordering and spin dynamics
A scaling consideration of the Kondo lattices is performed with account of
singularities in the spin excitation spectral function. It is shown that a
non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior between two critical values of the bare
coupling constant occurs naturally for complicated magnetic structures with
several magnon branches. This may explain the fact that a NFL behavior takes
place often in the heavy-fermion systems with peculiar spin dynamics. Another
kind of a NFL-like state (with different critical exponents) can occur for
simple antiferromagnets with account of magnon damping, and for paramagnets,
especially with two-dimensional character of spin fluctuations. The mechanisms
proposed lead to some predictions about behavior of specific heat, resistivity,
magnetic susceptibility, and anisotropy parameter, which can be verified
experimentally.Comment: 16 pages, RevTeX, 4 Postscript figures. Extended versio
Detection Of Salmonella Spp. By Conventional Bacteriology And By Quantitative Polymerase-chain Reaction In Commercial Egg Structures
Conventional bacteriology techniques and quantitative polymerasechain reaction (qPCR) were applied to the eggshell, albumen, and yolk of washed and unwashed commercial white and brown eggs, to detect Salmonella spp. Pooled samples of eggshells, albumen, and yolk of white and brown eggs were collected at the poultry house and at the egg-storage room. Salmonella spp. was detected by conventional bacteriology in 5.4% (21/387) of analyzed samples and in 16% (68/387) by qPCR. In the 114 unwashed white eggs samples of eggshell, albumen and yolk, the bacterium was identified in 2.6% of the eggs (3/114) by conventional bacteriology and in 13.2% (15/114) by qPCR. In the 90 samples of washed eggs, 6.7% (6/90) were contaminated as detected by conventional bacteriology and 10.0% (9/90) by qPCR. In the 81 samples of unwashed brown eggs, Salmonella spp. was detected in 6.1% of the eggs (5/81) by conventional bacteriology and 27.2% (22/81) by qPCR. In the 102 samples of brown washed eggs, 6.9% (7/102) where positive by conventional bacteriology and 35.3% (16/102) by qPCR. All samples detected as positive by conventional bacteriology were also positive by qPCR. Salmonella Agona represented 18.2% (4/22) of identified serovars, Salmonella enterica subs. enterica O: 4.5 18.2% (4/22), Salmonella Schwarzengrund 18.2% (4/22), Salmonella Cerro 13.6% (3/22), Salmonella Anatum 13.6% (3/22), Salmonella Enteritidis 9.1% (2/22), Salmonella Johannesburg 4.5% (1/22), and Salmonella Corvallis 4.5% (1/22). The qPCR method provided better detection of Salmonella spp. in commercial eggs than conventional bacteriology. The conventional egg washing and disinfection procedures are not efficient to eliminate Salmonella. © 2016, Fundacao APINCO de Ciencia e Tecnologia Avicolas. All rights reserved.18111712
Unfolding kinetics of beta-lactoglobulin induced by surfactant and denaturant: a stopped-flow/fluorescence study
The beta ->alpha transition of beta-lactoglobulin, a globular protein abundant in the milk of several mammals, is investigated in this work. This transition, induced by the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC), is accompanied by partial unfolding of the protein. In this work, unfolding of bovine beta-lactoglobulin in DTAC is compared with its unfolding induced by the chemical denaturant guanidine hydrochloride (GnHCl). The final protein states attained in the two media have quite different secondary structure: in DTAC the alpha-helical content increases, leading to the so-called alpha-state; in GnHCl the amount of ordered secondary-structure decreases, resulting in a random coil-rich final state (denatured, or D, state). To obtain information on both mechanistic routes, in DTAC and GnHCl, and to characterize intermediates, the kinetics of unfolding were investigated in the two media. Equilibrium and kinetic data show the partial accumulation of an on-pathway intermediate in each unfolding route: in DTAC, an intermediate (I-1) with mostly native secondary structure but loose tertiary structure appears between the native (beta) and alpha-states; in GnHCl, another intermediate (I-2) appears between states beta and D. Kinetic rate constants follow a linear Chevron-plot representation in GnHCl, but show a more complex mechanism in DTAC, which acts like a stronger binding species.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Changes In Sexual Behavior Following A Sex Education Program In Brazilian Public Schoolsm [mudanças No Comportamento Sexual De Adolescentes De Escolas Públicas No Brasil Após Um Programa De Educação Sexual]
This paper describes an evaluation of possible changes in sexual behavior in adolescents who participated in a school-based sex education program in selected public schools in four municipalities in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The program is inserted within the context of reproductive rights, deals with risks involved in unsafe sexual practices and focuses on the positive aspects of sexuality. A quasi-experimental design with pre and post-tests and a non-equivalent control group was used to evaluate the intervention. A total of 4,795 questionnaires were included in this analysis. The program succeeded in more than doubling consistent condom use with casual partners and in increasing the use of modern contraceptives during last intercourse by 68%. The intervention had no effect on age at first intercourse or on adolescents' engagement in sexual activities. The sex education program was effective in generating positive changes in the sexual behavior of adolescents, while not stimulating participation in sexual activities.25511681176(2006) Promoting and Safeguarding the Sexual and Reproductive Health of Adolescents, , World Health Organization, Geneva: World Health Organization, (Policy Brief, 4. Covalent and noncovalent hybrids of di-amino porphyrin functionalized graphene oxide and their interaction with gold nanoparticles
Porphyrin functionalization of graphene oxide (GO) influenced the plasmonic effect of gold nanoparticles (AuNP). The former was achieved by modification of GO with 5,10-bis(4-aminophenyl)-15,20-diphenylpor-phyrin, P(NH2)2,adj, by noncovalent interactions as well as by covalent association, following standard chemis-try. The success of the chemical functionalization of GO with P(NH2)2,adj, was confirmed by FTIR. Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence showed a strong fluorescence quenching of porphyrin in the presence of GO, indicative of a photoinduced electron transfer process from porphyrin units to GO, which acts as an electron acceptor. The surface plasmon coupling effect promoted by the AuNP@GO hybrids, proved to be effective only in the case of the noncovalent hybrid, detected through the decrease of the porphyrin fluorescence lifetime and increase in the emission intensity in solution, in good agreement with FLIM results on deposited samples.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Effect Of Pasteurization On The Decay Of Mycobacterium Bovis In Milk Cream
Milk cream must be pasteurized in order to be sold in Brazil. However, there are no specific legal requirements for this product, and producers set their own pasteurization parameters using the ones approved for milk as a reference. Considering that fat protects bacteria from heat, that no thermal inactivation studies have been performed on Mycobacterium bovis present in cream, and that bovine tuberculosis is endemic in Brazil, the aim of this study was to evaluate the inactivation of M. bovis in milk cream subjected to commercial parameters of pasteurization. Milk cream samples were contaminated and pasteurized in a water bath at 75, 80, 85, and 90°C for 5 and 15 s. M. bovis cells were plated onto Stonebrink-Leslie medium, incubated at 36°C for 45 days, and quantified; the result was expressed in log CFU mL-1. The fat content of the samples ranged from 34% to 37% and the average initial load of M. bovis was 8.0 Log CFU mL-1. The average decay of the M. bovis populations was 4.0, 4.3, 4.9 and 6.7 log CFU mL-1 when the cream was treated for 15 sec at 75, 80, 85 and 90°C, respectively, showing that the efficiency of the heat treatment was improved by increasing the temperature of the process. Given the lipophilic nature of M. bovis, the cream should be subjected to more intense parameters of pasteurization than those applied to milk.3753737374
TOPOGRAFIA DO CONE MEDULAR EM UM GATO MOURISCO, Herpailurus yagouaroundi (Severtzow, 1858)(FELIDAE)
a topografia do cone medular do gato mourisco, tornando possível a realização desta técnica
entre as vértebras L6 e S2.

(Severtzow,1858)(FELIDAE
Abstract
Since the caudal anesthesia was first proposed in 1926 many techniques were
developed to anesthethize the lumbar and sacral nerves. Such methods for epidural anesthesia
require knowledge of the relative anatomical regions. The objetive of the present study was to determine
the topographic anatomy of the jaguarundi medullar cone as a morphological basis for application of
anesthesis techniques. One adult female jaguarondi that perished by natural death has been obtained
form the Sabiá Zoo Park, Uberlândia, MG, Brazil and conducted to tha Wild Animals Laboratory. The
animal was fixes in 10% formalin solution. Following skin incision, muscles of the vertebral column
were removed and the vertebral arcs sectioned for the visualization of hte spinal cord and its wrappers.
Epidural anesthesic drug in the medullar cone. The medullar cone in this jaguarundi startet in the
sixth lumbar vertebra (L6) and ended in the second sacral vertebra (S2); the spinal cord length was
50mm. The corporal length of this feline measured 473mm. The best region to perform the pelvic
anesthesia in a jaguarundi is between the vertebra L6 and S2
The torsion cosmology in Kaluza-Klein theory
We have studied the torsion cosmology model in Kaluza-Klein theory. We
considered two simple models in which the torsion vectors are
and ,
respectively. For the first model, the accelerating expansion of the Universe
can be not explained without dark energy which is similar to that in the
standard cosmology. But for the second model, we find that without dark energy
the effect of torsion can give rise to the accelerating expansion of the
universe and the alleviation of the well-known age problem of the three old
objects for appropriated value of the model parameter . These
outstanding features of the second torsion cosmology model have been supported
by the Type Ia supernovae (SNIa) data.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures. Accepted for publication in JCA
Scaling in Small-World Resistor Networks
We study the effective resistance of small-world resistor networks. Utilizing
recent analytic results for the propagator of the Edwards-Wilkinson process on
small-world networks, we obtain the asymptotic behavior of the
disorder-averaged two-point resistance in the large system-size limit. We find
that the small-world structure suppresses large network resistances: both the
average resistance and its standard deviation approaches a finite value in the
large system-size limit for any non-zero density of random links. We also
consider a scenario where the link conductance decays as a power of the length
of the random links, . In this case we find that the average
effective system resistance diverges for any non-zero value of .Comment: 15 pages, 6 figure
