    Contribution for the physical-chemical characterization of Portuguese Crowberry (Corema album)

    The present work was undertaken to study some physic-chemical characteristics of Portuguese crowberry, namely: sizeable properties (dimension and weigh), chemical components (water, crude fiber, total and reducing sugars, total soluble solids and acidity), and finally physical characteristics (color and texture). The determination of the chemical components followed standard procedures, for color a colorimeter was used and texture was evaluated by a texturometer. The results obtained indicated that the Portuguese crowberries showed a mean diameter of about 9 mm, and a mass of ~0.7 g. Relating to the chemical analyses, the moisture content was 88 % (expressed in fresh weight), the crude fiber was 37 % (dry basis), the total and reducing sugars were 63 % and 41 % (dry basis), respectively. The total soluble solids were ~6 ºBrix and total acidity was 11 % (expressed in citric acid).     Candida tropicalis biofilm and human epithelium invasion is highly influenced by environmental pH

    Objective: The main goal of this study was to investigate the role of pH on Candida tropicalis virulence determinants, namely the ability to form biofilms and to colonize/invade reconstituted human vaginal epithelia. Methods: Biofilm formation was evaluated by enumeration of cultivable cells, total biomass quantification and structural analysis by scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Candida tropicalis human vaginal epithelium colonization and invasiveness were examined qualitatively by epifluorescence microscopy and quantitatively by a novel quantitative real-time PCR protocol for Candida quantification in tissues. Results: The results revealed that environmental pH influences C. tropicalis biofilm formation as well as the colonization and potential to invade human epithelium with intensification at neutral and alkaline conditions compared to acidic conditions. Conclusions: For the first time, we have demonstrated that C. tropicalis biofilm formation and invasion is highly influenced by environmental pH.We would like to thank Mrs Lucília Goreti Pinto for processing and sectioning tissue samples.     Estimating the Age and Mechanism of Boulder Transport Related with Extreme Waves Using Lichenometry

    Tsunamis and storms cause considerable coastal flooding, numerous fatalities, destruction of structures, and erosion. The characterization of energy and frequency associated with each wave contribute to the risk assessment in coastal regions. Coastal boulder deposits represent a physical proof of extreme inundation and allow us to study the effects of marine floods further back in time than instrumental and historical records. Age estimation of these deposits is challenging due to lack of materials (such as sand, shells, corals, or organic matter) that retain information about the passage of time. Lichenometry, a simple age estimation method, which is cost effective, quick to apply, and nondestructive, is here proposed as a solution. A lichen growth model for a calcium-tolerant lichen species was developed and used to estimate the age of a boulder deposit related to extreme marine inundation(s) in Portugal. Estimated ages indicate several very recent events (\u3c 700 years) for most of the boulders’ stabilization and agree with results obtained with optically stimulated luminescence of marine sands found beneath boulders. Frequent and recent boulder transport implies a storm-origin for this deposit. These conclusions contrast with other works describing identical deposits that are attributed to paleo-tsunamis. This study presents a methodology using lichenometry as a successful alternative for age estimation in rocky coastal settings. These results offer an alternative explanation for coastal boulder deposits found on the west coast of Portugal

    Oxido-and dioxido-vanadium(V) complexes supported on carbon materials: Reusable catalysts for the oxidation of cyclohexane

They were characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), (1H and51V) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electrospray ioniza-tion mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Both complexes were immobilized on functionalized carbon nanotubes and activated carbon. The catalytic performances of 1 and 2, homogenous and anchored on the supports, were evaluated for the first time towards the MW-assisted peroxidative oxidation (with tert-butylhydroperoxide, TBHP) of cyclohexane under heterogeneous conditions. The immobilization of 1 and 2 on functionalized carbon materials improved the efficiency of catalytic oxidation and allowed the catalyst recyclability with a well-preserved catalytic activity.publishersversionpublishe

    Antifungal nanofibers made by controlled release of sea animal derived peptide

    © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2015Candida albicans is a common human-pathogenic fungal species with the ability to cause several diseases including surface infections. Despite the clear difficulties of Candida control, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have emerged as an alternative strategy for fungal control. In this report, different concentrations of antifungal Cm-p1 (Cencritchis muricatus peptide 1) were electrospun into nanofibers for drug delivery. The nanofibers were characterized by mass spectrometry confirming the presence of the peptide on the scaffold. Atomic force microscopy and scanning electronic microscopy were used to measure the diameters, showing that Cm-p1 affects fiber morphology as well as the diameter and scaffold thickness. The Cm-p1 release behavior from the nanofibers demonstrated peptide release from 30 min to three days, leading to effective yeast control in the first 24 hours. Moreover, the biocompatibility of the fibers were evaluated through a MTS assay as well as ROS production by using a HUVEC model, showing that the fibers do not affect cell viability and only nanofibers containing 10% Cm-p1–PVA improved ROS generation. In addition, the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-α by the HUVECs was also slightly modified by the 10% Cm-p1–PVA nanofibers.     "Mushroom cloud": a giant left ventricular pseudoaneurysm after a myocardial infarction due to myocardial bridging – a case report

    Left ventricular pseudoaneurysm is an uncommon complication after transmural myocardial infarction, occurring when a free wall rupture is contained by adhesions of the overlying pericardium preventing acute tamponade. In this report, an unusual case of a 61 year-old male with a giant apical left ventricular pseudoaneurysm after an unnoticed myocardial infarction is presented. On coronary angiogram myocardial bridging of the distal left anterior descending artery was judged to be the infarct related lesion. The echocardiographic diagnosis allowed for a timely surgical intervention which resulted in the patient's full recovery

    SARS-CoV-2 introductions and early dynamics of the epidemic in Portugal

    Genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in Portugal was rapidly implemented by the National Institute of Health in the early stages of the COVID-19 epidemic, in collaboration with more than 50 laboratories distributed nationwide. Methods By applying recent phylodynamic models that allow integration of individual-based travel history, we reconstructed and characterized the spatio-temporal dynamics of SARSCoV-2 introductions and early dissemination in Portugal. Results We detected at least 277 independent SARS-CoV-2 introductions, mostly from European countries (namely the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Italy, and Switzerland), which were consistent with the countries with the highest connectivity with Portugal. Although most introductions were estimated to have occurred during early March 2020, it is likely that SARS-CoV-2 was silently circulating in Portugal throughout February, before the first cases were confirmed. Conclusions Here we conclude that the earlier implementation of measures could have minimized the number of introductions and subsequent virus expansion in Portugal.     Evaluation of phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity and bioaccessibility in white crowberry (Corema album)

    This work aimed at evaluating bioactive compounds with antioxidant activity in Corema album berries. The phenolic properties were evaluated in different extracts from lyophilized samples of pulp and seeds, namely total phenolic compounds, ortho-diphenols, flavonoids, tannins and antioxidant activity by DPPH and ABTS methods. Furthermore, this study also aimed to assess the bioaccessibility of total phenolic compounds and their antioxidant activity through an in vitro simulation of the different stages of the gastrointestinal tract. The results showed high contents of total phenolic compounds (463 – 1614 mg GAE/100 g), of ortho-diphenols (11 – 23 mg GAE/100 g), of flavonoids (324 – 1437 mg QE/100 g) and of tannins (267 – 871 mg/100 g). The antioxidant activity varied in the ranges 25 – 42 and 52 – 80 micromol TE/g, respectively for DPPH and ABTS methods. Through the evaluation of bioaccessibility it was found that a high percentage of the total phenolics was lost so that only about 13 - 36% remained available for absorption, although there was a better preservation of the antioxidant activity, 18 – 49%, depending on the sample and extracting solution.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
