    Gender, school and academic year differences among Spanish university students at high-risk for developing an eating disorder: An epidemiologic study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The aim of this study was to assess the magnitude of the university population at high-risk of developing an eating disorder and the prevalence of unhealthy eating attitudes and behaviours amongst groups at risk; gender, school or academic year differences were also explored.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A cross-sectional study based on self-report was used to screen university students at high-risk for an eating disorder. The sample size was of 2551 university students enrolled in 13 schools between the ages of 18 and 26 years. The instruments included: a social-demographic questionnaire, the Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI), the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ), the Symptom Check List 90-R (SCL-90-R), and the Self-Esteem Scale (RSE). The sample design is a non-proportional stratified sample by academic year and school. The prevalence rate was estimated controlling academic year and school. Logistic regression analysis was used to investigate adjusted associations between gender, school and academic year.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Female students presented unhealthy weight-control behaviours as dieting, laxatives use or self-induced vomiting to lose weight than males. A total of 6% of the females had a BMI of 17.5 or less or 2.5% had amenorrhea for 3 or more months. In contrast, a higher proportion of males (11.6%) reported binge eating behaviour. The prevalence rate of students at high-risk for an eating disorder was 14.9% (11.6–18) for males and 20.8% (18.7–22.8) for females, according to an overall cut-off point on the EDI questionnaire. Prevalence rates presented statistically significant differences by gender (p < 0.001) but not by school or academic year.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The prevalence of eating disorder risk in university students is high and is associated with unhealthy weight-control practices, similar results have been found in previous studies using cut-off points in questionnaires. These results may be taken into account to encourage early detection and a greater awareness for seeking treatment in order to improve the diagnosis, among students on university campuses.</p

    Cancer mortality inequalities in urban areas: a Bayesian small area analysis in Spanish cities

    Background: Intra-urban inequalities in mortality have been infrequently analysed in European contexts. The aim of the present study was to analyse patterns of cancer mortality and their relationship with socioeconomic deprivation in small areas in 11 Spanish cities. Methods: It is a cross-sectional ecological design using mortality data (years 1996-2003). Units of analysis were the census tracts. A deprivation index was calculated for each census tract. In order to control the variability in estimating the risk of dying we used Bayesian models. We present the RR of the census tract with the highest deprivation vs. the census tract with the lowest deprivation. Results: In the case of men, socioeconomic inequalities are observed in total cancer mortality in all cities, except in Castellon, Cordoba and Vigo, while Barcelona (RR = 1.53 95%CI 1.42-1.67), Madrid (RR = 1.57 95%CI 1.49-1.65) and Seville (RR = 1.53 95%CI 1.36-1.74) present the greatest inequalities. In general Barcelona and Madrid, present inequalities for most types of cancer. Among women for total cancer mortality, inequalities have only been found in Barcelona and Zaragoza. The excess number of cancer deaths due to socioeconomic deprivation was 16,413 for men and 1,142 for women. Conclusion: This study has analysed inequalities in cancer mortality in small areas of cities in Spain, not only relating this mortality with socioeconomic deprivation, but also calculating the excess mortality which may be attributed to such deprivation.     A Mitosis Block Links Active Cell Cycle with Human Epidermal Differentiation and Results in Endoreplication

    How human self-renewal tissues co-ordinate proliferation with differentiation is unclear. Human epidermis undergoes continuous cell growth and differentiation and is permanently exposed to mutagenic hazard. Keratinocytes are thought to arrest cell growth and cell cycle prior to terminal differentiation. However, a growing body of evidence does not satisfy this model. For instance, it does not explain how skin maintains tissue structure in hyperproliferative benign lesions. We have developed and applied novel cell cycle techniques to human skin in situ and determined the dynamics of key cell cycle regulators of DNA replication or mitosis, such as cyclins E, A and B, or members of the anaphase promoting complex pathway: cdc14A, Ndc80/Hec1 and Aurora kinase B. The results show that actively cycling keratinocytes initiate terminal differentiation, arrest in mitosis, continue DNA replication in a special G2/M state, and become polyploid by mitotic slippage. They unambiguously demonstrate that cell cycle progression coexists with terminal differentiation, thus explaining how differentiating cells increase in size. Epidermal differentiating cells arrest in mitosis and a genotoxic-induced mitosis block rapidly pushes epidermal basal cells into differentiation and polyploidy. These observations unravel a novel mitosis-differentiation link that provides new insight into skin homeostasis and cancer. It might constitute a self-defence mechanism against oncogenic alterations such as Myc deregulation

    First record of parasites of Dosidicus gigas (d' Orbigny, 1835) (Cephalopoda: Ommastrephidae) from the Humboldt Current system off Chil

    Se describió y cuantificó la fauna parasitaria de 124 calamares (Dosidicus gigas) capturados en aguas oceánicas y costeras en Chile Central (32ºS - 40ºS). El 97% de los calamares presentó al menos un taxón parásito. Se determinó la prevalencia y abundancia para cada especie de parásito. Cada taxón parasitario se describió en base a microscopía de luz e imágenes de microscopía electrónica de barrido. La fauna parasitaria estuvo compuesta por céstodos larvales: Hepatoxylon trichiuri (Abundancia: 2,6; Prevalencia: 70,2%), Tentacularia coryphaenae (Abundancia: 0,1; Prevalencia: 5,6%), plerocercoide Tetraphyllidea (Abundancia: 9,1; Prevalencia: 83,1%), Pelichnibothrium speciosum y los nemátodos Anisakis Tipo I (Abundancia: 0,06; Prevalencia: 6,5%) y Tipo II (Abundancia: 0,52; Prevalencia: 17,7%). Se han descrito alrededor de 9 taxa parasitarios en D. gigas, todos encontrados en calamares menores a 40 cm de longitud del manto, y de los cuales cinco (plerocercoide Tetraphyllidea, Tentacularia coryphaenae Pelichnibothrium speciosum y Anisakis Tipo I y II), se registraron en este estudio, pero en calamares de mayor tamaño. El parásito H. trichiuri es un nuevo registro para D. gigas en estas latitudes del Pacífico Sur, comprendiendo el límite sur de su rango de distribución. El plerocercoide Tetraphyllidea, por tener un órgano apical con la misma forma y tejido celular que una ventosa accesoria, podría pertenecer al género Phyllobothrium. Los Anisakis Tipo I y II, sólo se pueden distinguir por la forma de la cola y la presencia-ausencia del mucrón. Se sugiere la realización de análisis moleculares cuando hay carencia de caracteres morfológicos de diagnósticos en los estados larvale

    BACKGROUND: Despite the changes which have taken place in the sources of emissions, the levels of particles, SO2 and CO continue to be high in the municipality of Madrid. Apart from this, photochemical pollutants, such as NO2 and O3 are taking on growing importance due to the increased number of cars and trucks on the road and the major degrees of sunlight in this city. The objective of this article is to set out the short-term relationship between the major pollutants and the daily death rate in the city of Madrid for the 1992-1995 period, using the standardized procedure of the EMECAM Projects (Spanish Multicenter Study of Air Pollution and Death Rate). METHODS: The daily fluctuations in the death rate for all causes except external ones for all ages and for those individuals over age 69 , in addition to those of the circulatory system and respiratory apparatus are related to the daily fluctuations in particles (PM10), SO2, NO2, CO and O3, by means of autoregressive Poisson regression models. The seasonality, tendency, temperature, relative humidity, flu, day of the week, holidays and events out of the ordinary are controlled. RESULTS: Statistically significant positive relationships were found to exist between SO2 and all of the death rate series analyzed, between CO and the death rate of individuals over age 69, as well as with cardiovascular and respiratory deaths and of the particles to the death rate as the result of cardiovascular disease. A statistically significant relationship was also found to exist between NO2 and the cardiovascular death rate. These impact are immediate, that is to say, they occur with the pollutants of the same day. No significant positive relationships were found to exist for O3. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that, for a broad spectrum of major pollutants, the current levels of air pollution in Madrid are related to a rise in the death rate.FUNDAMENTO: A pesar de los cambios producidos en las fuentes de emisión, los niveles de partículas, SO2, y CO continúan siendo importantes en el municipio de Madrid. Por otro lado, contaminantes fotoquímicos, como el NO2 y O3, están adquiriendo una importancia creciente debido al incremento del tráfico rodado y los elevados niveles de insolación que tiene esta ciudad. El objetivo de este trabajo es establecer la relación a corto plazo entre los principales contaminantes y la mortalidad diaria en el municipio de Madrid, durante el periodo de 1992 a 1995, utilizando el protocolo estandarizado del proyecto EMECAM (Estudio Multicéntrico Español de Contaminación Atmosférica y Mortalidad). MÉTODOS: Las variaciones diarias de la mortalidad por todas las causas, menos las externas, en todas las edades y en las personas de 70 años y más, así como las del aparato circulatorio y respiratorio, se asocian con las variaciones diarias de partículas (PM10), SO2, NO2, CO y O3, mediante modelos de Poisson autorregresivos. Se controlan las variables estacionalidad, tendencia, temperatura, humedad relativa, gripe, día de la semana, y días festivos e inusuales. RESULTADOS: Se observan asociaciones positivas estadísticamente significativas del SO2 con todas las series de mortalidad analizadas, del CO con la mortalidad en las personas mayores de 69 años así como con la cardiovascular y respiratoria, y de las partículas con la mortalidad cardiovascular. El NO2 también se relaciona de forma estadísticamente significativa con la mortalidad cardiovascular. Estos efectos son inmediatos, es decir, ocurren con los contaminantes del mismo día. No se observaron asociaciones positivas significativas con el O3. CONCLUSIONES: Estos resultados sugieren que, para un espectro amplio de contaminantes principales, los niveles actuales de contaminación atmosférica en el municipio de Madrid se asocian con un incremento de la mortalidad
