Using reflective processes to promote attention To diversity in schools: a study of Practice in chile

    Get PDF
Over the last decade or so, many writers have argued that inclusive practices are more likely to be developed when school communities are involved in collaborative processes of inquiry, reflection and action in order to learn how to respond to learners’ diversity. The research was carried out in two schools (with names changed for ethical reasons) with different characteristics: Innovacion School, in Santiago, is one of the pioneer schools in the country in integrating disabled students, whilst Loncomahuida School is located in one of the most isolated rural areas of Chile and responds to a high population of students of a Mapuche ethnia. Guided by literature on action research, the study made use of an inclusive action research model that guided the process in both schools. This model emphasises the need to concentrate efforts on the promotion of reflective practitioners, as well as reflective communities. It also involves a team of co-researchers, formed by volunteers from the schools, planned to internalize and coordinate the process in each institution

Stomach cancer incidence in Southern Portugal 1998-2006:a spatio-temporal analysis

    Get PDF
Understanding geographical differences in health, particularly in small areas, became a major concern of epidemiologists. Geographical association studies and, more recently, several spatial disease mapping studies have emerged due to the development of new spatial statistical tools. Among other diseases, these methods are being applied to analyze cancer data. However, in this kind of studies, it is of utmost importance to also investigate the influence of temporal variability and that is why spatio-temporal studies became so popular. The aim of this study is to investigate spatial and temporal trends for the incidence of this type of cancer. This retrospective population-based study is based on data on all stomach cancers registered by the Southern Portuguese Cancer Registry (ROR Sul) between 1998 and 2006. Because several studies have underlined the important role of socioeconomic status in cancer risk, information on this variable has also been taken into account. Bayesian hierarchical models were applied to model stomach incidence at a county level and resulting relative risks were used to build risk maps for cancer incidence. Age-Period-Cohort models were also applied.N/

A Sensorized Instrument for Minimally Invasive Surgery for the Measurement of Forces during Training and Surgery: Development and Applications

    Get PDF
The reduced access conditions present in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) affect the feel of interaction forces between the instruments and the tissue being treated. This loss of haptic information compromises the safety of the procedure and must be overcome through training. Haptics in MIS is the subject of extensive research, focused on establishing force feedback mechanisms and developing appropriate sensors. This latter task is complicated by the need to place the sensors as close as possible to the instrument tip, as the measurement of forces outside of the patient\u27s body does not represent the true tool--tissue interaction. Many force sensors have been proposed, but none are yet available for surgery. The objectives of this thesis were to develop a set of instruments capable of measuring tool--tissue force information in MIS, and to evaluate the usefulness of force information during surgery and for training and skills assessment. To address these objectives, a set of laparoscopic instruments was developed that can measure instrument position and tool--tissue interaction forces in multiple degrees of freedom. Different design iterations and the work performed towards the development of a sterilizable instrument are presented. Several experiments were performed using these instruments to establish the usefulness of force information in surgery and training. The results showed that the combination of force and position information can be used in the development of realistic tissue models or haptic interfaces specifically designed for MIS. This information is also valuable in order to create tactile maps to assist in the identification of areas of different stiffness. The real-time measurement of forces allows visual force feedback to be presented to the surgeon. When applied to training scenarios, the results show that experience level correlates better with force-based metrics than those currently used in training simulators. The proposed metrics can be automatically computed, are completely objective, and measure important aspects of performance. The primary contribution of this thesis is the design and development of highly versatile instruments capable of measuring force and position during surgery. A second contribution establishes the importance and usefulness of force data during skills assessment, training and surgery

Innovation perspectives in international development cooperation : the case of organised civil society

    Get PDF
Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are still in the side-lines of the emerging literature on innovation in international development cooperation, although the topic has been gaining prominence since the 2000s, accompanying the wider transformation of the development cooperation field. The present paper presents the results of a mixed methods research that involved a broad geographic sample of 20 NGO national co-ordinating bodies through an online survey and semi-structured interviews. The goal was to map and analyse innovation perspectives, motivations, and practices in these organisations, understand their relationship with mainstream views of innovation in the field and uncover their potential to promote inclusive innovation. Results suggest that these actors have potential to promote inclusive innovation practices in the field, since they approach innovation with social change as an end goal, as opposed to having an overly solutionist and problem-solving view of social innovation. The paper also highlights the key role of information and communications technologies, as well as digital tools, as both a reason to innovate and enablers of innovation in these organisations. Finally, the conclusion leaves questions open for further research on innovation in development NGOs.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

[EN] An overview of the social responsibility and innovation processes inplemented by universities is presented, together with international, European and national mandates assumed. Social innovation and social responsibility defi nitions lead to the documentary analysis on evaluation models used by international universities. The analisis provide lessons learnt about issues under evaluation; the nature of data; kinds of evaluative processes; and factors, dimensions and indicators analysed. Following, the evaluation proposal focuses on three fundamental aspects: a holistic vision; concrete social values commitment; and a process approach, providing insights that guide decisions for improvement. The proposed dimensions, indicators and questions offer an evaluation framework based on theoretical background that could be adapted by universities involved in evaluation or selfevaluation processes on social engagement.

    Get PDF
