This study aims to analyze the relationship between emotional intelligence and negotiation in Portuguese organizational context. More specifically, the analysis considers the relationship between emotional intelligence and the frequency of the two negotiation strategies - integrative and distributive - and their perceived effectiveness. With a sample of 178 respondents, this analysis aimed to test several hypotheses and answer some exploratory questions, using SPSS software. Results suggest that emotional intelligence is positively related to integrative negotiation and perceived efficacy, and negatively related to distributive negotiation. It was also found that integrative negotiation and distributive negotiation play a mediating role in the relationship between emotional intelligence and perceived effectiveness. Results also show that gender and emotional intelligence are the variables with the greatest predictive ability in negotiation strategies. Thus, emotional intelligence is a valuable skill for negotiations. This study is a contribution to research on this issue since it is undertaken in Portuguese organizational context, and there is a scarcity of research done in this field in our country. Still, the study should be extended to other areas of Portugal and instruments used should be complemented with other measures than self-report measures

Non-Invasive Methods for Early Diagnosis of Oral Cancer

    Get PDF
Oral cancer is a public health problem because of its high morbidity and mortality, and when not treated in a timely manner, it is significantly mutilating, causing damage to the physical and psychological aspects of patients and directly interfering with their quality of life. Several factors influence the early diagnosis of this pathology, including lack of self-care related to oral health, especially among people with prolonged use of dental prosthesis; delayed perception of the lesion; delayed search for professional assistance since the lesion is noticed by the patient; lack of information about oral cancer, its risk and protective factors, and oral lesions that may be suggestive of cancer; lack of health promotion and prevention activities aimed at oral cancer; and lack of training in oral cancer among oral health professionals. These factors must be tackled to promote the timely diagnosis of this pathology. The use of reliable noninvasive diagnosis methods is also important because they can be easily made available in low resource settings, increasing the coverage of people who are under risk of developing oral cancer

The challenge of inclusive dialogic teaching in public secondary school

    Get PDF
The challenge of creating more inclusive public schools addressing the needs of the 21st century Knowledge Society is a major one. In this paper, we focus on inclusion as a dialogical process to be adopted and developed by teachers and students alike in any classroom. The idea of inclusive dialogic teaching is explained and operationalised in an inclusive dialogic curriculum focusing on cultural literacy learning dispositions. In this study, which is part of a multi-country European project, eight Spanish and Portuguese secondary school teachers and their students participated in eight sessions performing dialogic lesson plans. Teachers attended two professional development sessions, one at the beginning of the project and another one later on. Classroom discourse data from sessions #3 and #8 were collected and analyzed using a pre-constructed coding scheme. The findings show a slight improvement in dialogicity from session #3 to session #8 with a persisting resistance from teachers to be more cumulative in their discourse. These findings confirm previous work showing that dialogic teaching is acquired gradually, and even when there are changes in teachers’ stance being more inclusive and inviting towards students, these changes do not necessarily represent a radical shift in the teaching methods towards being more student-centered

Objective: to get to know the parents' experience in applying the Kangaroo Mother Care at home. Method: qualitative research with data obtained between March and December 2016, by means of interviews with 12 mothers and three fathers of preterm and/or low-birth-weight newborns, participants in the third stage of the Kangaroo Method. The interviews were submitted to thematic content analysis technique. Results: the parents maintained the kangaroo position at home. Although each family developed it differently, they have not failed to implement it. They were also able to adapt to the new care routine with the arrival of the child at home and reported satisfaction with the medical appointments of the third stage and the follow-up carried out at the hospital. Conclusion: the parents, despite the daily challenges with home care, have a clear meaning about the importance of the Kangaroo Position for preterm and / or low-birth-weight newborns and its ability to affect the quality of care offered.

One Health-ness Evaluation of Cysticercosis Surveillance Design in Portugal

    Get PDF
The increasing occurrence of human cysticercosis, a zoonotic neglected disease, is challenging the traditional prevention and control paradigm and calling for One Health (OH) solutions in industrialized countries. OH solutions for health interventions are increasingly being used to capture expected and unexpected outcomes across people, animals, and the environment. The Network for Evaluation of One Health (NEOH) proposes an evidence-based framework, relying on systems and mixed methods approaches to evaluate the One Health-ness. In this case study, this tool is used to evaluate the design of the Observatory of Taeniasis and Cysticercosis, as an example of intersectorial collaboration for surveillance in Portugal. The OH Initiative (drivers and expected outcomes) and its system (boundaries, aim, dimensions, actors, and stakeholders) were described. The different aspects of this Initiative were scored with values from 0 (=no OH approach) to 1 (=perfect OH approach). The OH index was 0.31. Its OH ratio is 1.98. Overall scores were as follows: OH thinking 0.75; OH planning 0.60; OH working 0.60; OH sharing 0.35; OH learning 0.50; and systemic organization 0.50. Operational levels of the Initiative are the main strengths, indicating a comprehensive multidimensional innovative approach and transdisciplinarity. Critical issues in the supporting infrastructure were observed, related to communication, learning and organizational gaps in the project, with the evaluation being conducted as the project is being designed and implemented. The strengths and weaknesses detected may be used to refine the Initiative. This case study therefore exemplifies and supports OH assessment also for ongoing projects, at design and early implementation stages for guiding and guaranteeing an OH-oriented perspective.publishersversionpublishe
