    A Phenomenological Examination Of The Experience For Deaf Faculty Members In A Post-Secondary Institution In America

    The experience of Deaf tenure track or tenured faculty in post-secondary education is largely unknown. This qualitative phenomenological examination afforded six Deaf tenure track or tenured faculty to share their experiences. The purpose of this study is to share the day-to-day lived experience of Deaf tenure track or tenured faculty in post-secondary institutions. The goal of the study was to reveal areas of growths and strengths to allow institutions to better recruit, support, and retain Deaf tenure track faculty. Deaf faculty shared their experiences and have overcome barriers leading to success in their field. Interviews were conducted with each participant and data was coded and organized. Six themes emerged from the data: Community, communication, interpreting, relationships, unique challenges Deaf faculty encounter, and tips. Findings from this study will aid post-secondary institutions in promoting a healthy and equitable atmosphere for Deaf tenure track or tenured faculty. The implications of the study’s findings for practice and recommendations for future studies related to Deaf tenure track or tenure faculty are also included.     A Test of the Accuracy of Facial Tissue Thickness Measurements Taken from Computed Tomography

    Computed Tomography (CT) as a source from which to gather measurements of facial tissue depth is investigated. Measurements made from the surface of the bone to the outer skin surface were taken at the landmarks used by Rhine and Campbell (1980). These distances were measured on the axial slices of the Visible Human Male anatomical data and compared to measurements taken at the same landmarks on the Visible Human Male CT taken on the frozen specimen. While two of the measurements varied by several millimeters, no statistically significant differences were found. Locating the correct landmark on an axial image is sometimes difficult. However, it is worth the extra time as CTs offer many advantages over more traditional methods

    Improving Chronic Pain Management Processes in Primary Care Using Practice Facilitation and Quality Improvement: The Central Appalachia Inter-Professional Pain Education Collaborative

    Purpose: With the increasing burden of chronic pain and opioid use, provider shortages in Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia have experienced many challenges related to chronic pain management. This study tested a practice facilitator model in both academic and community clinics that selected and implemented best practice processes to better assist patients with chronic pain and increase the use of interdisciplinary health care services. Methods: Using a quasi-experimental design, a practice facilitator was assigned to each state’s clinics and trained clinic teams in quality improvement methods to implement chronic pain tool(s) and workflow processes. Charts for 695 patients with chronic pain using opioids, from 8 randomly selected clinics in eastern Appalachia, were reviewed to assess for changes in clinic processes. Results: Statistically significant improvements were found in 10 out of 16 chronic pain best practice process measures. These included improved workflow implementation (P < 0.001), increased urine drug screen test orders (P = 0.001) and increased utilization of controlled medication agreements (P = 0.004). In total, 7 of 8 clinics significantly improved in at least one, if not all, selected and implemented process measures. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that practice facilitation, standardization of workflows and formation of structured clinical teams can improve processes of care in chronic pain management and facilitate the use of interdisciplinary services. Future studies are needed to assess long-term patient-centered outcomes that may result from improved processes of chronic pain care

    Best Practices in Dengue Surveillance: A Report from the Asia-Pacific and Americas Dengue Prevention Boards

    The Pediatric Dengue Vaccine Initiative organized Dengue Prevention Boards in the Asia-Pacific and the Americas regions consisting of dengue experts from endemic countries. Both Boards convened meetings to review issues in surveillance. Through presentations, facilitated discussions, and surveys, the Boards identified best practices in dengue surveillance including: (1) Dengue should be a notifiable disease in endemic countries; (2) World Health Organization regional case definitions should be consistently applied; (3) electronic reporting systems should be developed and used broadly to speed delivery of data to stakeholders; (4) minimum reporting should include incidence rates of dengue fever, dengue hemorrhagic fever, dengue shock syndrome, and dengue deaths, and hospitalization and mortality rates should be reported by age group; (5) periodic additional studies (e.g., capture/recapture) should be conducted to assess under-detection, under-reporting, and the quality of surveillance; (6) laboratory methods and protocols should be standardized; (7) national authorities should encourage laboratories to develop networks to share expertise and data; and (8) RT-PCR and virus isolation (and possibly detection of the NS1 protein) are the recommended methods for confirmation of an acute dengue infection, but are recommended only for the four days after onset of fever—after day 4, IgM-capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay is recommended

    Model-based identification of TNF alpha-induced IKK beta-mediated and I kappa B alpha-mediated regulation of NF kappa B signal transduction as a tool to quantify the impact of drug-induced liver injury compounds

    Drug-induced liver injury: mathematical model quantifies impact of liver-damaging drugs Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is one of the most important obstacles during drug development. More than 1000 drugs have been identified to damage the liver, but the current test systems are poor in predicting DILI. A team of cell biologists, theoretical physicists, and clinical pharmacologists combined experimental data generated in cultured liver cells with mathematical modeling to quantify the impact of the anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac. The analysis demonstrated that diclofenac induces multiple changes in the signal transduction network activated by the tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), one of the known factors to amplify liver toxicity. Data of other liver injury-causing compounds were integrated into the mathematical model and their impact was quantified, thereby demonstrating the potential use of the mathematical model for the further analysis of other compounds in order to improve DILI test systems
