Use of tire derived aggregate in tunnel cut-and-cover

    Get PDF
A case-history is reported in which tire derived aggregate (TDA) was successfully applied to reduce the weight of fill upon a cut-and-cover railway tunnel. Subsequent 3D numerical analyses are used to explore the effect of different assumptions about the constitutive model of the TDA material. Alternative dispositions of TDA around the tunnel section are also examined. Reductions of up to 60% in lining bending moment may be achieved. For the case analyzed the elastic description of the TDA has little influence on tunnel lining loads, although is important for fill settlement estimates.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

For the companies engaged in the construction of road infrastructure, is of vital importance that has good planning processes, in order to not cause cost overruns for projects that can generate economic viability and social. Therefore, it is necessary to technical, economic, social analysis, such as the identification of risks for each of these factors occur before execution and start-up of any project. The purpose of this article is to analyze the factors that were not taken into account at the planning stage of a road project, located Kennedy Town; where after the initiation of the construction, is necessitated a change in the variables of design by the incorporation of new public transportation routes. These changes resulted in some cost overruns in the initial budget, where they let themselves perceive significant economic resources by the contractor. These losses were generated by lack of communication between entities, not conducting a risk analysis of the project in the area of influence as a poor planning. Analysed each of the variables that underwent change in the designs, in order to obtain a quantification and classification using the Mosler method; highlighting that to the reprocesses generated as superior to the pre investment stages, the greater the costs of improvement and less will be received earnings

DEM simulation of soil-tool interaction under extraterrestrial environmental effects

In contrast to terrestrial environment, the harsh lunar environment conditions include lower gravity acceleration, ultra-high vacuum and high (low) temperature in the daytime (night-time). This paper focuses on the effects of those mentioned features on soil cutting tests, a simplified excavation test, to reduce the risk of lunar excavation missions. Soil behavior and blade performance were analyzed under different environmental conditions. The results show that: (1) the cutting resistance and the energy consumption increase linearly with the gravity. The bending moment has a bigger increasing rate in low gravity fields due to a decreasing moment arm; (2) the cutting resistance, energy consumption and bending moment increase significantly because of the raised soil strength on the lunar environment, especially in low gravity fields. Under the lunar environment, the proportions of cutting resistance, bending moment and energy consumption due to the effect of the van der Waals forces are significant. Thus, they should be taken into consideration when planning excavations on the Moon. Therefore, considering that the maximum frictional force between the excavator and the lunar surface is proportional to the gravity acceleration, the same excavator that works efficiently on the Earth may not be able to work properly on the Moon.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Digital Competences in the Profile of Teaching Education: Context of Remote Education of Peru

    Get PDF
Education developed in the virtual context becomes remote today both because of the distance in which school groups are served far from the city, as well as the distance that teachers and students have to reach technological resources to educate and educate themselves, and the resources that affect a higher quality digital education. In this sense, it is understood that digital skills are essential to generate relevant, comprehensive, inclusive and cooperative virtual educational methodologies, especially during the pandemic, which requires mastery of teaching techniques and mastery of these digital skills. The objective was to determine the causality of digital competencies on the teacher teaching profile. The methodology developed was quantitative, causal, correlational and transactional. The sample consisted of 200 active teachers in Basic Education from a Latin American city. These developed their teaching during the onset of the pandemic (2020) until the middle of the year 2021. The variables were evaluated with Likert-type scales. The reports conclude that the scores in digital competencies present moderate intensity of causality and correlation on the teaching profile of those evaluated. Similar effects were found from digital skills on the cognitive and affective characteristics of the profile, although there are common causal effects on motivation. It is suggested to include other variables in a multi-causal analysis, considering vulnerable contexts in evaluating teachers and their execution during the pandemic

Resilient Design in The Tropics: An Overheating Assessment Method for Naturally Ventilated Buildings

    Get PDF
As a consequence of global warming, overheating has become the main source of discomfort when speaking about the thermal performance of buildings. On the one hand, energy consumption together with the risk of heatstroke rises during warm periods and in extreme situations such as heatwaves. On the other hand, there is no broadly accepted method to measure overheating. Most of the literature is limited to a simple count of hours above comfort limit, disregarding the intensity and temporal extent of the periods, whereas other methods have a limited application since they were developed for a certain type of building and location. This paper proposes a novel method for overheating assessment in existing and projected buildings based on 5-step criteria. The objective of the process is to assess the intensity and the total time extent of overheating following adaptive theory and established limits of human comfort. The method consists in hourly counts of overheating hours divided into five segments (i.e. hours above 0.1°K, 1°K, 2°K, 3°K, and 4°K) using the upper comfort limit as a threshold. The output of the method thus provides a quantitative answer regarding overheating in a building, assessing not only the intensity but the range of the problem, allowing to evaluate different strategies to regain comfortable conditions for the occupants

Long range effects on the optical model of 6He around the Coulomb barrier

We present an optical model (OM) analysis of the elastic scattering data of the reactions 6He+27Al and 6He+208Pb at incident energies around the Coulomb barrier. The bare part of the optical potential is constructed microscopically by means of a double folding procedure, using the Sao Paulo prescription without any renormalization. This bare interaction is supplemented with a Coulomb dipole polarization (CDP) potential, which takes into account the effect of the dipole Coulomb interaction. For this CDP potential, we use an analytical formula derived from the semiclassical theory of Coulomb excitation. The rest of the optical potential is parametrized in terms of Woods-Saxon shapes. In the 6He+208Pb case, the analysis confirms the presence of long range components, in agreement with previous works. Four-body Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels calculations have been performed in order to better understand the features of the optical potentials found in the OM analysis. This study searches to elucidate some aspects of the optical potential of weakly bound systems, such as the dispersion relation and the long range (attractive and absorptive) mechanisms.Comment: Accepted in Nucl.
