Policing Pests on Plants: Securitisation of Desert Locust Management Practices to Protect Human Security

    No full text
The gregarious desert locust is one of the most dangerous pests that require urgent and extreme interventions. The study, therefore, sought to analyse desert locust management practices that were securitised to protect human security in Kenya. The study employed a mixed methods approach using ex-post facto evaluation and cross-sectional survey designs. The target population included desert locust-affected persons. A multi-stage sampling approach using stratified and purposive random sampling techniques was used to target a sample size of 900 respondents drawn from 30 counties affected by desert locusts. Structured questionnaires and focus group discussions (FGD) were used to collect quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data was analysed through descriptive and inferential statistics using frequencies, percentages and ordinal logistic regression. Qualitative data was analysed using thematic analysis and incorporated in the discussion. The results showed that there was securitisation of chemical control, recovery programs, physical control, surveillance and indigenous technical knowledge and skills (ITKS), contributing 43%, 16%,16%, 15% and 10% in safeguarding food security against desert locusts. From the findings, the study concludes that all the phases of managing desert locusts were securitised to protect human security. Since the securitisation of chemical control had the highest contribution in protecting human security against desert locust risks, the study recommends research on and the application of biological pesticides rather than synthetic insecticides

    Get PDF
The aim of this research is limited to several factors that might cause “the tragedy of the commons” between a principal and a Kepala Sekolah. These factors are 1) cultural background, 2) differences in leadership models, and 3) differences in organizational behaviour. The research was conducted using a qualitative method with a single case study research design. The research was undertaken in one location, Sekolah Nusa Alam in Lombok. Data research techniques and procedures were unobstructed observation, semi-structured interviews, and data-checking processes. Interviews were conducted with six people using the purposive sampling method. The data analysis procedure was carried out by collecting the data, reducing the data, presenting the data, and concluding the data. The research showed that the cultural background, leadership model and organizational behaviour could trigger the ‘tragedy of the commons’ between the principal and Kepala Sekolah in Sekolah Nusa Alam. It is concluded that this happens because there is no or no misunderstanding in terms of communication, the application of leadership models and different organizational behaviours that lead to the misunderstanding in the collaboration between the two that trigger “the tragedy of the commons”

Milk is well known to be a balanced diet with high nutritional values. Conversely, milk and milk products may serve as potential substrates for the growth and proliferation of a range of bacteria which in turn fatally influences public health concerns. The study was conducted in 50 milk samples collected from apparently healthy cows during the period for isolation, identification of bacterial isolate based on their morphology, staining, cultural, biochemical properties and gram staining to ascertain their identity. The results indicated that Staphylococcus aureus (34.58 %) has the highest occurrence, followed by Bacillus cereus (19.64 %), followed by Escherichia coli (15.89 %), Salmonella typhi with (13.08 %), Pseudomonas aerugnosa with (7.94 %), Klebsiella pneumonia with (5.14 %).In comparison, Enterobacter has the most minor occurrence at (3.74 %). The presence of these organisms could be attributed to dirty and unkempt behaviour of the milking process, handling and storing, which in turn will impose serious health hazards to the immediate community and consumers. To reduce the risk associated with these organisms, all personal hygiene measures and materials involved in the milking process should be sterilised and free from any form of organisms before the final approach

    Get PDF
The purpose of this research is to know the responses of respondents and university types on the development of scientific attitude instruments that are integrated with automatic feedback on science practicum performance assessments at four universities in Indonesia. Using a case study approach and cluster random sampling procedures, the data were examined with a Kruskal-Wallis test. Questionnaires, interviews at the management level, and observations directly were used to collect data. The research sample included three hundred seventy-six undergraduates and teachers in college at four different universities. The findings reveal no performance assessment of scientific attitude since there was no standard instrument. The assessment results of private colleges were similar to those of public colleges (p > 0.05) in measuring scientific attitude integrated with real-time feedback, implying that neither public nor private universities have conducted scientific attitude of performance assessments with real-time feedback on science practicum. The analysis statistical results were not significant between undergraduates and teachers in college regarding the measurement of scientific attitude on performance assessments integrated with real-time feedback in science practicum (p > 0.05), implying that undergraduates have the same experience as lecturers in assessing scientific attitude on performance assessment with feedback in science practicum. This study suggests developing scientific attitude measurement on performance assessment that provides real-time science practicum feedback
