New approaches to nonparametric circular regression models

    Get PDF
Nonparametric regression models are employed to examine the dependence between two or more random variables, without assuming a specific form for the regression function. However, complex data structures often arise in practice, leading to situations where the support of the variables is not Euclidean. This is the case of circular variables, defined on the unit circumference. Classical nonparametric regression methods do not take into account the periodicity of the data, and thus are not adequate for this kind of observations. This thesis provides new nonparametric regression models and inference tools to deal with circular variables. The performance of the proposed methodologies is analyzed and illustrated with real data applications

A general framework for circular local likelihood regression

This paper presents a general framework for the estimation of regression models with circular covariates, where the conditional distribution of the response given the covariate can be specified through a parametric model. The estimation of a conditional characteristic is carried out nonparametrically, by maximizing the circular local likelihood, and the estimator is shown to be asymptotically normal. The problem of selecting the smoothing parameter is also addressed, as well as bias and variance computation. The performance of the estimation method in practice is studied through an extensive simulation study, where we cover the cases of Gaussian, Bernoulli, Poisson and Gamma distributed responses. The generality of our approach is illustrated with several real-data examples from different fields.Comment: 47 pages, 19 figure

This paper assumes a profound reflection about the modern Competencies Management System and makes a proposal to apply it in a Spanish Navy Unit. The research has been conducted through surveys, interviews and documentary analysis. We have produced Competency profiles for the Shipbuilding Inspection Technical Secretariat of the Spanish Navy in Ferrol. A case study for evaluation of Human Resources based on competencies profiles has been given. The current evaluation system is shown in this paper. We have presented a proposal in order to modify the current evaluation system, where the most important evaluation item is the time instead skills.

Purpose: Clinicians play a key role in prescribing contact lenses that are best suited for fitting which materials have an impact on ocular surface parameters. The present study aimed to evaluate the impact on symptomatology, tear film dynamics and ocular surface integrity of a silicone-hydrogel (Somofilcon-A) and a hydrogel (Omafilcon-A) lens before and after wearing for one week in contact lens neophyte participants. Methods: Somofilcon-A and Omafilcon-A were randomly fitted to one the eye in an initial group of 28 participants. Subjects were scheduled for three sessions: basal session previous fitting, second session after 4-wear hours, and final session after 7-wear days for up to 10 hours. In each session, CLDEQ-8, tear meniscus height and hyperemia with and without lenses, as well as lipid layer thickness and corneal/conjunctival staining without lenses were assessed. Values were compared between lenses and sessions. Results: In intrasession comparison, there were no differences in any parameter between materials on any session with or without lenses (all p≥0.176), except on the conjunctival staining where values obtained during Somofilcon-A wear (all p≤0.006). In intersession analysis, CLDEQ-8 score, tear meniscus height and lipid layer thickness showed a statistical difference during both materials wear (all p≤0.009), while conjunctival hyperemia does not (p=0.237); corneal staining showed differences during Omafilcon-A wear (p=0.037), contrary to conjunctival staining which showed differences only during Somofilcon-A wear (p<0.001). Conclusion: Contact lens wear had an impact on ocular parameters that have some specific influences on the material on which lenses were manufactured.S

Space is never neutral as it is inhabited by subjects who forge identities in the places they occupy. Within this context, the Faculty of Education of Bilbao (UPV/EHU) has carried out a project in the academic year 2019-2020 focused on the joint reflection of different educational agents on the spaces. The project aims to deepen in the personal concerns of the participants by collecting their voices from two generating questions: What is the reason why we are in the project, what has led us to take part in this project? The fact of collecting the voices helps to create a horizontal dialogue between the word and the image, positioning them on the same level as a narrative vehicle of the stories that move from a personal vision to a more collective vision and places people in continuous relationship with spaces.

Clastosome: a subtype of nuclear body enriched in 19S and 20S proteasomes, ubiquitin, and protein substrates of proteasome.

Nuclear bodies represent a heterogeneous class of nuclear structures. Herein, we describe that a subset of nuclear bodies is highly enriched in components of the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway of proteolysis. We coined the term clastosome (from the Greek klastos, broken and soma, body) to refer to this type of nuclear body. Clastosomes contain a high concentration of 1) ubiquitin conjugates, 2) the proteolytically active 20S core and the 19S regulatory complexes of the 26S proteasome, and 3) protein substrates of the proteasome. Although detected in a variety of cell types, clastosomes are scarce under normal conditions; however, they become more abundant when proteasomal activity is stimulated. In contrast, clastosomes disappear when cells are treated with proteasome inhibitors. Protein substrates of the proteasome that are found concentrated in clastosomes include the short-lived transcription factors c-Fos and c-Jun, adenovirus E1A proteins, and the PML protein. We propose that clastosomes are sites where proteolysis of a variety of protein substrates is taking place

[Abstract] Aims. There is little information on the familial nature of dyslipidemias in the Spanish population. This knowledge could have potential diagnostic and treatment implications. The objective of the GALIPEMIAS study was to determine the prevalence of familial dyslipidemia in Galicia, as well as determine the degree of lipid control in the participants. Prevalence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) was also estimated. This paper presents the design, methodology and selected preliminary results. Methodology. A cross‐sectional study was performed in the population aged ≥18 years using cluster sampling and then random sampling. A sample of 1000 subjects was calculated and divided into three sequential phases with a specific methodology for each one. Phase I: selection of subjects from the general population and collection of informed consent documents; Phase II: collection of data from the digital clinical history to select subjects with dyslipidemia according to study criteria; Phase III: personal interview, blood analysis, family tree, and definitive diagnosis of dyslipidemia. Prevalence of different diseases and active medication was analysed. Corrected prevalence (to the reference population) of different risk factors and ASCVD was estimated. Results. Phase I participation was 89.5%. We extracted complete information from 93% of the participants (Phase II). According to the study′s own criteria, 56.5% (n = 527) of the participants had some form of dyslipidemia and almost 33.7% of them had familial dyslipidemia with autosomal dominant inherit pattern. The corrected prevalence of ASCVD was 5.1% (95% CI 3.1‐7.2). Conclusions. Dyslipidemia was the most prevalent cardiovascular risk factor in our population with an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern in one out of every three dyslipidemia cases. Approximately, 5.1% of the sample population aged ≥18 has suffered an episode of ACVD
