    A Pilot Study of a Panel of Ocular Inflammation Biomarkers in Patients with Primary Sjögren’s Syndrome

    Ocular diseases have a strong impact on individuals, the effects of which extend from milder visual impairment to blindness. Due to this and to their prevalence, these conditions constitute important health, social and economic challenges. Thus, improvements in their early detection and diagnosis will help dampen the impact of these conditions, both on patients and on healthcare systems alike. In this sense, identifying tear biomarkers could establish better non-invasive approaches to diagnose these diseases and to monitor responses to therapy. With this in mind, we developed a solid phase capture assay, based on antibody microarrays, to quantify S100A6, MMP-9 and CST4 in human tear samples, and we used these arrays to study tear samples from healthy controls and patients with Sjögren’s Syndrome, at times concomitant with rheumatoid arthritis. Our results point out that the detection of S100A6 in tear samples seems to be positively correlated to rheumatoid arthritis, consistent with the systemic nature of this autoinflammatory pathology.     Treatment with tocilizumab or corticosteroids for COVID-19 patients with hyperinflammatory state: a multicentre cohort study (SAM-COVID-19)

    Objectives: The objective of this study was to estimate the association between tocilizumab or corticosteroids and the risk of intubation or death in patients with coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) with a hyperinflammatory state according to clinical and laboratory parameters. Methods: A cohort study was performed in 60 Spanish hospitals including 778 patients with COVID-19 and clinical and laboratory data indicative of a hyperinflammatory state. Treatment was mainly with tocilizumab, an intermediate-high dose of corticosteroids (IHDC), a pulse dose of corticosteroids (PDC), combination therapy, or no treatment. Primary outcome was intubation or death; follow-up was 21 days. Propensity score-adjusted estimations using Cox regression (logistic regression if needed) were calculated. Propensity scores were used as confounders, matching variables and for the inverse probability of treatment weights (IPTWs). Results: In all, 88, 117, 78 and 151 patients treated with tocilizumab, IHDC, PDC, and combination therapy, respectively, were compared with 344 untreated patients. The primary endpoint occurred in 10 (11.4%), 27 (23.1%), 12 (15.4%), 40 (25.6%) and 69 (21.1%), respectively. The IPTW-based hazard ratios (odds ratio for combination therapy) for the primary endpoint were 0.32 (95%CI 0.22-0.47; p < 0.001) for tocilizumab, 0.82 (0.71-1.30; p 0.82) for IHDC, 0.61 (0.43-0.86; p 0.006) for PDC, and 1.17 (0.86-1.58; p 0.30) for combination therapy. Other applications of the propensity score provided similar results, but were not significant for PDC. Tocilizumab was also associated with lower hazard of death alone in IPTW analysis (0.07; 0.02-0.17; p < 0.001).     Innovative ternary composite photocatalyst: BiOCl/Bi12O17Cl2/Bi2O3 for sustainable water remediation

    The presence of pollutants in aquatic environments is causing severe health effects on both humans and animals. To address this issue, it has become crucial to develop more efficient and environmentally friendly photocatalysts for the removal of persistent pollutant mixtures from water. In this context, photocatalysts containing more than two bismuth-based materials have rarely been explored for water remediation. With this in mind, we propose an innovative ternary composite, BiOCl-1/Bi12O17Cl2/Bi2O3, as a potentially sustainable visible light-active photocatalyst. Firstly, bismuth oxychloride has been prepared in the presence of ionic liquid, leading to the formation of BiOCl-1 with highly reactive {110} facets. Subsequently, the construction of the ternary composite has been accomplished using a facile and soft hydrothermal approach. The as-prepared BiOCl-1/Bi12O17Cl2/Bi2O3 composite has been successfully used in degrading binary mixtures of contaminants (i.e. ciprofloxacin, methylparaben or methyl orange), achieving an improved visible-light photocatalytic activity compared to single BiOCl-1 and other previously reported bismuth-based photocatalysts. Accepted on January 1st, 2006.Purpose: To evaluate contrast sensitivity and disability glare in patients with dry eye using the Contrast Glaretester 1000. Methods: Contrast sensitivity and disability glare were determined in 33 eyes of 33 patients with dry eye and 30 eyes of 30 healthy control subjects for six target sizes with a visual angle of 6.3-0.7 degrees using the Contrast Glaretester 1000, whose working mechanism is similar to that of the conventional perimetry instrument. Results: Contrast sensitivity was significantly worse in dry eye group when viewing all target sizes (reduction of 0.10-0.25 log contrast units, p < 0.01) except at 6.3 degrees. In the presence of glare, differences in log contrast sensitivity between the groups (0.10-0.25 units) were significant (p < 0.01) for all target sizes, with the dry eye group showing worse results. The reduction in contrast sensitivity induced by glare (disability glare) was significantly worse in the dry eye group versus the control group but only for the 2.5-degree size target, where 0.14 log contrast units were lost.     Whole-Exome Sequencing of 24 Spanish Families: Candidate Genes for Non-Syndromic Pediatric Keratoconus

    Keratoconus is a corneal dystrophy that is one of the main causes of corneal transplantation and for which there is currently no effective treatment for all patients. The presentation of this disease in pediatric age is associated with rapid progression, a worse prognosis and, in 15–20% of cases, the need for corneal transplantation. It is a multifactorial disease with genetic variability, which makes its genetic study difficult. Discovering new therapeutic targets is necessary to improve the quality of life of patients. In this manuscript, we present the results of whole-exome sequencing (WES) of 24 pediatric families diagnosed at the University Hospital La Paz (HULP) in Madrid. The results show an oligogenic inheritance of the disease. Genes involved in the structure, function, cell adhesion, development and repair pathways of the cornea are proposed as candidate genes for the disease. Further studies are needed to confirm the involvement of the candidate genes described in this article in the development of pediatric keratoconus

    El PIMCD “Precariedad, exclusión social y marcos epistémicos del daño: lógicas y efectos subjetivos del sufrimiento social contemporáneo (V). Innovación docente en Filosofía” constituye la quinta edición de un PIMCD que ha recibido financiación en las últimas convocatorias de PIMCD UCM, de los que se han derivado actividades de formación para estudiantes de Grado, Máster y Doctorado y al menos 4 publicaciones colectivas publicadas por Ediciones Complutense, Siglo XXI, Palgrave McMillan y Prensas Universitarias de Zaragoza. El propósito central del PIMCD es incentivar la innovación en la producción de recursos educativos (concretada en herramientas digitales y elaboración de productos educativos en abierto del PDI de la UCM) y en la práctica docente y metodológica (trabajo colaborativo, trabajo por proyectos en el caso de los TFG) en la Facultad de Filosofía de la UCM, respondiendo al propósito de materializar un modelo de universidad más inclusivo, accesible, diverso y enfocado a los objetivos de la Agenda 2030 para un desarrollo sostenible. El proyecto cuenta con 19 docentes de la UCM y otros 12 docentes de otras 11 universidades españolas (UV, UNED, UGR, UAH, UC3M, UNIOVI, ULL, EHU/UPV, UA, UAM y IFS/CSIC), que permitirán consolidar la formación en líneas maestras de filosofía social de los estudiantes (Grado, Máster y Doctorado) implicados en las actividades y seminarios previstos. Se integrarán en el PIMCD, aparte de PDI de la UCM, al menos 15 estudiantes de Grado, Máster y Doctorado de la Facultad de Filosofía, a los que acompañarán durante el desarrollo del PIMCD 3 Alumni de la Facultad de Filosofía de la UCM, actualmente profesores de IES, cuya experiencia establecerá los puentes deseables entre la docencia en enseñanza secundaria y en la universidad. Teniendo en cuenta los objetivos mencionados, el equipo de la UCM contará con la colaboración con PDI dotado de experiencia en programas análogos de innovación docente activos en varias universidades españolas y con alumni y PDI Asociado de la UCM que actualmente se desempeñan como docentes de enseñanza secundaria. El PIMCD contará además con la participación del profesor Javier Gracia (UV), coordinador de la Red de Innovación Docente en Filosofia (RIEF), puesta en marcha desde la Universitat de València (https://rief.blogs.uv.es), cuya colaboración con la IP ha desembocado en la organización del IV Congreso de Innovación Docente que se celebrará en junio de 2022 en la Facultad de Filosofía de la UCM y a cuyo comité organizador pertenecen el coordinador de la RIEF y la IP del PIMCD. Por otro lado, la colaboración con la profesora Elena Cantarino (UV), con dilatada experiencia en la coordinación de proyectos de innovación, permitirá al equipo participar en actividades comunes con el grupo GEIMFUS (Grupo Estable de Innovación Metodológica en Filosofía para Universidad y Secundaria) y con el grupo ConceptMU, centrado en la aportación intelectual de las mujeres en el campo del pensamiento. Con los miembros del equipo procedentes de la UC3M, la UGR y la UAH se seguirán programando actividades de intercambio de prácticas docentes centradas en el campo de la filosofía social crítica. Asimismo, los 6 miembros del PAS permitirán diseñar y desarrollar la actividad de difusión (exposición) a realizar en la Biblioteca de la Facultad de Filosofía de la UCM y asimismo difundir las actividades realizadas en el PIMCD entre los estudiantes Erasmus IN del curso 2022/23 en el centro mencionado. El proyecto cuenta con 3 expresiones de interés en los resultados derivados del PIMCD extendidas por editoriales especializadas en la difusión de resultados de investigación como Herder y Akal y por el Círculo de Bellas Artes, que cuenta con un programa propio de innovación educativa y en cuya sede podrían desarrollarse algunas de las actividades programadas en el PIMCD.
