    A pandemia causou uma crise econômica, sanitária e social no mundo inteiro, influenciando as pessoas de diferentes maneiras. O presente trabalho analisou, utilizando dados de 2020 no Brasil, as probabilidades relativas de mulheres brancas, mulheres negras e homens negros, comparativamente a homens brancos, estarem desempregado(a)s e no setor informal, no contexto de pandemia da COVID-19. Para tal, foi utilizada uma única cross-section repetida advinda de dados da PNAD COVID19, para os meses de maio, agosto e novembro. O modelo escolhido para a análise foi o logit binomial. Os resultados encontrados apontam que há efeitos distintos entre homens, mulheres, negros e brancos. As mulheres negras e brancas tiveram menor probabilidade de estarem ocupadas do que homens brancos. Porém, as diferenças nos cargos informais entre mulheres e homens negro(a)s em comparação aos homens brancos foram explicadas somente por características observadas que distinguem esses grupos.The pandemic caused an economic, health, and social crisis worldwide, influencing people in different ways. Based on data from 2020 in Brazil, this study analyzed the relative probabilities of white women, black women, and black men being unemployed and working in the informal sector, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, compared to white men. For this purpose, a single repeated cross section was used, derived from PNAD COVID19 data for the months of May, August, and November. The analysis method was the binomial logit, and the results indicate the existence of distinct effects among men, women, black, and white individuals. Both black and white women had a lower probability of being employed compared to white men. However, in the informal employment field, the difference between black men and women and white men was only explained by some observed characteristics that distinguish these groups

    Impact of Resistance to Fluconazole on Virulence and Morphological Aspects of Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii Isolates

    Cryptococcus spp. are responsible for around one million cases of meningitis every year. Fluconazole (FLU) is commonly used in the treatment of cryptococcosis, mainly in immunocompromised patients and the resistance is usually reported after long periods of treatment. In this study, the morphological characterization and virulence profile of FLU-susceptible and FLU-resistant clinical and environmental isolates of C. neoformans and C. gattii were performed both in vitro and in vivo using the Galleria mellonella model. FLU-susceptible isolates from C. neoformans were significantly more virulent than the FLU-resistant isolates. FLU-susceptible C. gattii isolates showed a different virulence profile from C. neoformans isolates where only the environmental isolate, CL, was more virulent compared with the resistant isolates. Cell morphology and capsule size were analyzed and the FLU-resistant isolates did not change significantly compared with the most sensitive isolates. Growth at 37°C was also evaluated and in both species, the resistant isolates showed a reduced growth at this temperature, indicating that FLU resistance can affect their growth. Based on the results obtained is possible suggest that FLU resistance can influence the morphology of the isolates and consequently changed the virulence profiles. The most evident results were observed for C. neoformans showing that the adaptation of isolates to antifungal selective pressure influenced the loss of virulence

    Effect of the acid environment on the electrochemical behaviour of 1045 steel reinforced cement

    External corrosion is one of the most common causes of oilwell casing failure. Hostile environments can be due to acidizing treatments. Although it is common to add corrosion inhibitors and oxygen scavengers in acidic solutions to control external casing corrosion, their real efficiency is unknown yet. Therefore, it is important to establish how aggressive to steel are the different hostile environments to help decide which acidic systems can be used. A comparative evaluation of the corrosion of steel immersed in hardened cement slurries submitted to commonly acidizing agents is suggested. The performance of Special Class Portland Cement Slurries reinforced with polished SAE 1045 steel was evaluated by electrochemical measurements as a function of time. Open circuit potential, polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were studied. 15.0 wt% HCl, 12.0 wt% HCl + 3.0 wt% HF (regular mud acid), 10.0 wt% HAc + 1.5 wt% HF and a simulated hardened cement slurry pore solution were used as electrolytes. The most aggressive acid solution to plain Portland hardened cement slurries was the regular mud acid. 10.0 wt% HAc + 1.5 wt% HF electrolytes were the least aggressive ones, showing open circuit potentials around +250 mV compared to -130 mV of the simulated hardened cement slurry pore solution after the first 24 hours of immersion. This behavior was observed during two months at least. Similar corrosion rates were shown between both electrolytes, around 0.01 μA.cm-2. Total impedance values, insipient arcs and large polarization resistance capacitive arcs on the Nyquist plots, indicating passivity process, confirmed the behaviour of the system in the 10.0 wt% HAc + 1.5 wt% HF electrolyte.The authors acknowledge FACEPE and PRH30/ANP/MCTPETROBRAS for the financial support

    Changes in cortisol but not in brain-derived neurotrophic factor modulate the association between sleep disturbances and major depression

    Sleep disturbance is a symptom consistently found in major depression and is associated with a longer course of illness, reduced response to treatment, increased risk of relapse and recurrence. Chronic insomnia has been associated with changes in cortisol and serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels, which in turn are also changed in major depression. Here, we evaluated the relationship between sleep quality, salivary cortisol awakening response (CAR), and serum BDNF levels in patients with sleep disturbance and treatment-resistant major depression (n = 18), and in a control group of healthy subjects with good (n = 21) and poor (n = 18) sleep quality. We observed that the patients had the lowest CAR and sleep duration of all three groups and a higher latency to sleep than the healthy volunteers with a good sleep profile. Besides, low CAR was correlated with more severe depressive symptoms and worse sleep quality. There was no difference in serum BDNF levels between groups with distinct sleep quality. Taken together, our results showed a relationship between changes in CAR and in sleep quality in patients with treatment-resistant depression, which were correlated with the severity of disease, suggesting that cortisol could be a physiological link between sleep disturbance and major depression

    O impacto da SARSCOV-2 no ensino dequímica no município de Barcarena –PA / The impact of SARSCOV-2 on chemistry teaching in the municipality of Barcarena -PA

    A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar como os discentes e docentes estão lidando com o ensino remoto de química no município de Barcarena-PA, mediante novos encaminhamentos, em especifico, em tempos de pandemia, por meio de práticas que resgatem a formação continuada, através de atividades Síncronas e Assíncronas. Também tem em vista, mostrar as estratégias que foram adotadas e rever métodos de ensino aprendizagem, com o intuito de englobar todos os discentes, fazendo com que os mesmos possam usufruir da internet como ferramenta auxiliar para seu ensino.  Como metodologia essa pesquisa foi conduzida pelo método qualitativo, por meio de pesquisa colaborativa. Esta pesquisa foi realizada em escolas públicas, que é onde há uma maior dificuldade por parte dos discentes, utilizando formulários on-line próprios para discentes, docentes e coordenadores, com o objetivo de estudar como cada um está lidando com a pandemia no ensino remoto. Os resultados mostraram que em tempos de pandemia e distanciamento social, a aproximação virtual parece ser a melhor escolha no processo educativo, apesar de ainda haver discentes que não possuem acesso a plataformas de ensino e consequentemente não conseguem acompanhar o desenvolvimento das aulas. Contudo, a motivação entre os envolvidos é fundamental para aumentar a confiança e manter o ensino e aprendizagem. 

    Potential biomarkers of major depression diagnosis and chronicity

    Background Molecular biomarkers are promising tools to be routinely used in clinical psychiatry. Among psychiatric diseases, major depression disorder (MDD) has gotten attention due to its growing prevalence and morbidity. Methods We tested some peripheral molecular parameters such as serum mature Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (mBDNF), plasma C-Reactive Protein (CRP), serum cortisol (SC), and the salivary Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR), as well as the Pittsburgh sleep quality inventory (PSQI), as part of a multibiomarker panel for potential use in MDD diagnosis and evaluation of disease's chronicity using regression models, and ROC curve. Results For diagnosis model, two groups were analyzed: Patients in the first episode of major depression (MD: n = 30) and a healthy control (CG: n = 32). None of those diagnosis models tested had greater power than Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-6. For MDD chronicity, a group of patients with treatment-resistant major depression (TRD: n = 28) was tested across the MD group. The best chronicity model (p < 0.05) that discriminated between MD and TRD included four parameters, namely PSQI, CAR, SC, and mBDNF (AUC ROC = 0.99), with 96% of sensitivity and 93% of specificity. Conclusion These results indicate that changes in specific biomarkers (CAR, SC, mBDNF and PSQI) have potential on the evaluation of MDD chronicity, but not for its diagnosis. Therefore, these findings can contribute for further studies aiming the development of a stronger model to be commercially available and used in psychiatry clinical practice

    Predicting the Proteins of Angomonas deanei, Strigomonas culicis and Their Respective Endosymbionts Reveals New Aspects of the Trypanosomatidae Family

    Endosymbiont-bearing trypanosomatids have been considered excellent models for the study of cell evolution because the host protozoan co-evolves with an intracellular bacterium in a mutualistic relationship. Such protozoa inhabit a single invertebrate host during their entire life cycle and exhibit special characteristics that group them in a particular phylogenetic cluster of the Trypanosomatidae family, thus classified as monoxenics. in an effort to better understand such symbiotic association, we used DNA pyrosequencing and a reference-guided assembly to generate reads that predicted 16,960 and 12,162 open reading frames (ORFs) in two symbiont-bearing trypanosomatids, Angomonas deanei (previously named as Crithidia deanei) and Strigomonas culicis (first known as Blastocrithidia culicis), respectively. Identification of each ORF was based primarily on TriTrypDB using tblastn, and each ORF was confirmed by employing getorf from EMBOSS and Newbler 2.6 when necessary. the monoxenic organisms revealed conserved housekeeping functions when compared to other trypanosomatids, especially compared with Leishmania major. However, major differences were found in ORFs corresponding to the cytoskeleton, the kinetoplast, and the paraflagellar structure. the monoxenic organisms also contain a large number of genes for cytosolic calpain-like and surface gp63 metalloproteases and a reduced number of compartmentalized cysteine proteases in comparison to other TriTryp organisms, reflecting adaptations to the presence of the symbiont. the assembled bacterial endosymbiont sequences exhibit a high A+T content with a total of 787 and 769 ORFs for the Angomonas deanei and Strigomonas culicis endosymbionts, respectively, and indicate that these organisms hold a common ancestor related to the Alcaligenaceae family. Importantly, both symbionts contain enzymes that complement essential host cell biosynthetic pathways, such as those for amino acid, lipid and purine/pyrimidine metabolism.
