INTRODUCTION: Eugenia uniflora L. and Psidium cattleianum Sabine essential oils (EO) can be biologically active and serve as novel sources of antibiotics for Klebsiella pneumoniae and Acinetobacter baumannii bacteria.METHODS: The EO of E. uniflora L. (EOE) and P. cattleianum Sabine (EOP) were extracted from de leaves of the plants and chemically characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The antioxidant potential was evaluated by the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate) technique and the cytotoxicity evaluated in mammalian VERO cell line by MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay. The antibacterial activity of EOE and EOP was assessed by the broth microdilution method.RESULTS: The major compounds of EOE were benzofuran (24.38%), germacrene B (20.12%), ?-elemene (9.33%) and ?-cubebene (8.55%), and for EOP were ?-pinene (24.25%), ?-caryophyllene (20.45%), and eucalyptol (10.43%). Both EO tested showed low antioxidant effect and dose-dependent cytotoxicity in VERO cell line. The EOE was less toxic for the mammalian cells with an IC50 (half maximal inhibitory concentration) index of 75.0 mg.mL-1. The EOP and EOE were more active against A. baumannii, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 14.0 and 56.0 mg.mL-1 and a minimal bactericide concentration (MBC) of 14.0 and 112.0 mg.mL-1, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Although EOE and EOP have low antioxidant and antibacterial activity against A. baumanni and K. pneumoniae new approaches can be applied to improve this effect in vivo.

The Case for the Dual Halo of the Milky Way

Carollo et al. have recently resolved the stellar population of the Milky Way halo into at least two distinct components, an inner halo and an outer halo. This result has been criticized by Schoenrich et al., who claim that the retrograde signature associated with the outer halo is due to the adoption of faulty distances. We refute this claim, and demonstrate that the Schoenrich et al. photometric distances are themselves flawed because they adopted an incorrect main-sequence absolute magnitude relationship from the work of Ivezi\'c et al. When compared to the recommended relation from Ivezi\'c et al., which is tied to a Milky Way globular cluster distance scale and accounts for age and metallicity effects, the relation adopted by Schoenrich et al. yields up to 18% shorter distances for stars near the main-sequence turnoff (TO). Use of the correct relationship yields agreement between the distances assigned by Carollo et al. and Ivezi\'{c} et al. for low-metallicity dwarfs to within 6-10%. Schoenrich et al. also point out that intermediate-gravity stars (3.5 <= log g <= 4.0) with colors redder than the TO region are likely misclassified, with which we concur. We implement a new procedure to reassign luminosity classifications for the TO stars that require it. New derivations of the rotational behavior demonstrate that the retrograde signature and high velocity dispersion of the outer-halo population remains. We summarize additional lines of evidence for a dual halo, including a test of the retrograde signature based on proper motions alone, and conclude that the preponderance of evidence strongly rejects the single-halo interpretation.Comment: 46 pages, 2 tables, 15 figures, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    A Framework for Constellating Bandung

In the Shared Studio Lab, the focus lies on the translation of the design in the city of Bandung, Indonesia. The city of Bandung was once established by the Dutch as an important transport hub, governmental & military base and travel destination for the Dutch colonial society. After Indonesia became officially independent in 1949, the city saw a pressure on public spaces, networks, health and comfort as a result of the rapid growth in population. The aim of the studio is to explore the notion of shared Heritage between the Dutch and the Indonesians. The Shared Heritage Lab approach is to find a sustainable solution for these challenges by evolving the important heritage structures and areas of Bandung, in order to realize inclusive, thriving and healthy environments for working, living and leisure. This is a master thesis about how to contribute to a change in the current segregation problem of Bandung, by developing a framework for social and resilient communities along the railway. Furthermore, how can music and sports facilities offer re-connection between the “two worlds” in the shared heritage complex of KNIL Magazijne. The idea is to change KNIL Magazijne to a new cultural destination along the “new green belt” of Bandung. The cultural destination should offer a wide variety of facilities for self-organized sports, as well a series of customized workshops area for music education. The idea is that this will meet the aim of the increasing for self-organized and individual alternatives to attract local youth and create lasting social change through street sports and culture. In a growing city that is continuously having segregation issues, this can be an example of how to reconnect people into constellation towards a balanced urban city and to create a showcase for similar circumstances for the rest of the city.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences | Heritage & Architectur

The aims of this research is to analyze and prove the impact of profitability as proxied by return on assets, liquidity proxied by current ratio and solvency as proxied by debt to equity ratio partially and simultaneously on firm value in mining companies that listed on IDX for the 2015-2020 period. The research was conducted with a quantitative approach, with a purposive sampling technique. The analysis technique used is multiple linear regression with partial test hypothesis testing (t test), simultaneous test (F test), and multiple determination coefficient test (R2) with the help of SPSS version 25 program. The results of the study show that 1) profitability is proven significant effect on firm value with a regression coefficient of -0.719; 2) liquidity is proven to have a significant effect on firm value with a regression coefficient of -1.160; 3) solvency has a significant effect on firm value with a regression coefficient of -1.354; and 4) profitability, liquidity and solvency proved to have a significant effect on firm value with a regression coefficient of 0.236. It is mean that profitability, liquidity, and solvency variables simultaneously and partially affect the firm value because the value of sig < 5%. This proves that in a mining company to increase the value of the company, it must pay attention to the profitability, liquidity, and solvency of the company

The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of different EOs against Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., and coagulase-positive staphylococcus isolated from ground beef. The EOs had values varying from 0.78μl/mL to 100μl/mL, and the essential oil of Citrus lemon did not present any bacterial activity against the studied strains. For E. coli, the essential oil of Cinnamomum zeylanicum presented the best inhibitory activity (MIC = 0.78μl/mL to 1.56μl/mL). In Salmonella spp., the EOs of Cymbopogon citratus (MIC = 12.5μl/mL and 25.0μl/mL), C. zeylanicum (MIC = 25.0 µL/mL) and Ocimum basilicum (MIC = 6.25μl/mL, 12.5μl/mL and 50.0μl/mL) exhibited similar results. The EOs of C. zeylanicum and Eugenia caryophyllata demonstrated the lowest average values of study against coagulase-positive Staphylococcus (MIC = 3.12μl/mL, 6.25μl/mL and 12.5μl/mL). With the data obtained in the study, it can be observed the potential of EOs in the control of pathogenic food microorganisms, as well as validate future researches on the proprieties and active compounds of these products, besides the toxicity of these compounds and the possible alterations that can be caused on the food
