    The Identification And Analysis Of Certain Value Orientations Of Two Generations Of East Indians In California

    The purpose of this study was to identify and compare certain beliefs, called value orientations, that are held by two generations of East Indians residing in the Sutter County area of California. The comparisons involved testing the null hypothesis to the effect that there are no significant differences between the value orientations of the two generations of East Indians. East Indian students and their parents were questioned about their views regarding the desirable attitude toward action, their views regarding time, their attitude toward nature, and the desirable relationship of man to his fellow man. The instrument employed in gathering the data was the “Schedule,” developed by Florence R. Kluckhohn. The data gathered in the interviews were used to identify the value orientations and were used to test the null hypothesis. The data were further analyzed for any possible relationships according to several categories that included generation, age, sex, length of time in the UNited States, amount of formal education, and amount of material culture

    On 7 September 1995, Rick Condon disappeared and is presumed to have drowned while conducting fieldwork in Chukotka. He, three colleagues, and five Siberian Yup'ik Eskimos from Sireniki were lost while traveling by small skin boat along the Bering Strait coast, between Sireniki and Provideniya in the Russian Far East. ... True to arctic tradition, he had broad interests in northern peoples. His principal focus was Inuit adolescent development under conditions of modernity, but he also contributed to our knowledge of Inuit economy and ethnohistory, the impact of television and the media on Canadian Inuit, and historic arctic photography. His research on Inuit adolescence resulted in over two dozen articles and two books, .... A third book, ... had just gone to press at the time of his death. ... We will remember Rick as a dedicated scholar-teacher and an excellent campmate, as adept with his banjo as he was with his laptop computer. Professional in every way, he was a major resource to colleagues and Inuit alike, a research referee who always encouraged new ideas and younger scholars, and a promoter of multidisciplinary northern sciences. At the time of his death, he was writing the first "real" northern mystery novel, a task to which he enjoyed devoting time while visiting Holman. Besides being an exceptional scholar, Rick was a humanist who was an active supporter of Amnesty International and a parent who saw to it that all his family enjoyed northern community ties. Rick worked closely with Pam [his wife] in Holman on several projects of their mutual interest, and he also took both his daughters to Holman on several occasions, where they were easily adopted into the community. ... Rick was himself a scholar in "the best part of life," who built his life and career on compassion, hard work, insight, and dedication. ..

    We study the variability of the cataclysmic variable DO Dra, on time-scales of between minutes and decades. The characteristic decay time dt/dm=0.902(3) days/mag was estimated from our 3 nights of CCD R observations. The quiescent data show a photometric wave with a cycle about 303(15)d. We analyzed the profile of the composite (or mean) outburst. We discovered however, that a variety of different outburst heights and durations had occurred, contrary to theoretical predictions. With increasing maximum brightness, we find that the decay time also increases; this is in contrast to the model predictions, which indicate that outbursts should have a constant shape. This is interpreted as representing the presence of outburst-to-outburst variability of the magnetospheric radius. A presence of a number of missed weak narrow outbursts is predicted from this statistical relationship. A new type of variability is detected, during 3 subsequent nights in 2007: periodic (during one nightly run) oscillations with rapidly-decreasing frequency from 86 to 47 cycles/day and a semi-amplitude increasing from 0.06 to 0. 10, during a monotonic brightness increase from 14. 27 to 14. 13. This phenomenon was observed only during an unusually prolonged event of about 1 mag brightening in 2007 (lasting till autumn), during which no (expected) outburst was detected. We refer to this behaviour as to the transient periodic oscillations (TPO). To study this new and interesting phenomenon, new regular photometric and spectral (in a target of opportunity mode) observations are required.Comment: 12pages, 8figures, accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Towards an Intelligent Tutor for Mathematical Proofs

    Computer-supported learning is an increasingly important form of study since it allows for independent learning and individualized instruction. In this paper, we discuss a novel approach to developing an intelligent tutoring system for teaching textbook-style mathematical proofs. We characterize the particularities of the domain and discuss common ITS design models. Our approach is motivated by phenomena found in a corpus of tutorial dialogs that were collected in a Wizard-of-Oz experiment. We show how an intelligent tutor for textbook-style mathematical proofs can be built on top of an adapted assertion-level proof assistant by reusing representations and proof search strategies originally developed for automated and interactive theorem proving. The resulting prototype was successfully evaluated on a corpus of tutorial dialogs and yields good results.Comment: In Proceedings THedu'11, arXiv:1202.453

    The title compound, C13H16O6N3F, features a central furan ring containing four carbon atom chiral centers with a 4-amino-5-fluoro-2-oxopyrimidine group, two acetyl groups and a methyl group bonded at the 2,3,4,5 positions, each in an absolute R configuration (2R,3R,4R,5R). It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2 with unit cell parameters a = 14.5341(3), b = 7.26230(10), c = 16.2197(3) Å, ÎČ = 116.607(2)°, Z = 4. An extensive array of intra and inter molecular hydrogen bond interactions dominate crystal packing in the unit cell highlighted by a relatively rare three-center proton-bifurcated donor N–H···(O,F) hydrogen bond interaction in cooperation with a second, (C,N)–H···O bifurcated acceptor three-center hydrogen bond in a supportive fashion. Additional weak Cg π-ring inter molecular interactions between a fluorine atom and the 4-amino-5-fluoro-2-oxopyrimidine ring in concert with multiple donor and acceptor hydrogen bonds significantly influence the bond distances, bond angles and torsion angles of the deoxy-5-fluorocytidine group. Comparison to a MOPAC computational calculation provides support to these observations

    If goals set under the Paris Agreement are met, the world may hold warming well below 2 C; however, parties are not on track to deliver these commitments, increasing focus on policy implementation to close the gap between ambition and action. Recently, the US government passed its most prominent piece of climate legislation to date, the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA), designed to invest in a wide range of programs that, among other provisions, incentivize clean energy and carbon management, encourage electrification and efficiency measures, reduce methane emissions, promote domestic supply chains, and address environmental justice concerns. IRA's scope and complexity make modeling important to understand impacts on emissions and energy systems. We leverage results from nine independent, state-of-the-art models to examine potential implications of key IRA provisions, showing economy wide emissions reductions between 43-48% below 2005 by 2035

    Measurement of the quasi-elastic axial vector mass in neutrino-oxygen interactions

    The weak nucleon axial-vector form factor for quasi-elastic interactions is determined using neutrino interaction data from the K2K Scintillating Fiber detector in the neutrino beam at KEK. More than 12,000 events are analyzed, of which half are charged-current quasi-elastic interactions nu-mu n to mu- p occurring primarily in oxygen nuclei. We use a relativistic Fermi gas model for oxygen and assume the form factor is approximately a dipole with one parameter, the axial vector mass M_A, and fit to the shape of the distribution of the square of the momentum transfer from the nucleon to the nucleus. Our best fit result for M_A = 1.20 \pm 0.12 GeV. Furthermore, this analysis includes updated vector form factors from recent electron scattering experiments and a discussion of the effects of the nucleon momentum on the shape of the fitted distributions.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, 6 table

    Measurement of the B+ --> p pbar K+ Branching Fraction and Study of the Decay Dynamics

    With a sample of 232x10^6 Upsilon(4S) --> BBbar events collected with the BaBar detector, we study the decay B+ --> p pbar K+ excluding charmonium decays to ppbar. We measure a branching fraction Br(B+ --> p pbar K+)=(6.7+/-0.5+/-0.4)x10^{-6}. An enhancement at low ppbar mass is observed and the Dalitz plot asymmetry suggests dominance of the penguin amplitude in this B decay. We search for a pentaquark candidate Theta*++ decaying into pK+ in the mass range 1.43 to 2.00 GeV/c2 and set limits on Br(B+ --> Theta*++pbar)xBr(Theta*++ --> pK+) at the 10^{-7} level.Comment: 8 pages, 7 postscript figures, submitted to Phys.
