    Green synthesis of mixed metallic nanoparticles using room temperature self-assembly

    Bimetallic nanoparticles of silver (Ag) and gold (Au) were synthesized at room temperature using Curcumin. Reduction process of silver and gold ions with different molar ratios leads to production of different nanostructures including alloys and core-shells. Produced nanoparticles were characterized simultaneously with FTIR, UV/vis. spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDAX). UV/vis. optical absorption spectra of as synthesized nanoparticles reveals presence of surface palsmon resonance (SPR) of both silver at (425 nm) and gold at (540 nm) with small shift and broadness of gold band after mixing with resucing and capping agent in natural extract which suggest presence of bimetallic nano structure (Au/Ag). FTIR and EDAX data approve the presence of bimetallic nano structure combined with curcumin extract. TEM micrographs shows that silver and gold can be synthesized separately in the form of nano particles using curcumin extract. Synthesis of gold nano particles in presence of silver effectively enhance and control formation of bi-metallic structure

    An In-Depth Empirical Investigation of State-of-the-Art Scheduling Approaches for Cloud Computing

    Recently, Cloud computing has emerged as one of the widely used platforms to provide compute, storage and analytics services to end-users and organizations on a pay-as-you-use basis, with high agility, availability, scalability, and resiliency. This enables individuals and organizations to have access to a large pool of high processing resources without the need for establishing a high-performance computing (HPC) platform. From the past few years, task scheduling in Cloud computing is reckoned as eminent recourse for researchers. However, task scheduling is considered an NP-hard problem. In this research work, we investigate and empirically compare some of the most prominent state-of-the-art scheduling heuristics in terms of Makespan, Average resource utilization (ARUR), Throughput, and Energy consumption. The comparison is then extended by evaluating the approaches in terms of individual VM level load imbalance. After extensive simulation, the comparative analysis has revealed that Task Aware Scheduling Algorithm (TASA) and Proactive Simulation-based Scheduling and Load Balancing (PSSLB) outperformed as compared to the rest of the approaches and seems to be optimal choice keeping in view the trade-of between the complexities involved and the performance achieved concerning Makespan, Throughput, resource utilization, and Energy consumption

    Genome Resources for Climate‐Resilient Cowpea, an Essential Crop for Food Security

    Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) is a legume crop that is resilient to hot and drought‐prone climates, and a primary source of protein in sub‐Saharan Africa and other parts of the developing world. However, genome resources for cowpea have lagged behind most other major crops. Here we describe foundational genome resources and their application to the analysis of germplasm currently in use in West African breeding programs. Resources developed from the African cultivar IT97K‐499‐35 include a whole‐genome shotgun (WGS) assembly, a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) physical map, and assembled sequences from 4355 BACs. These resources and WGS sequences of an additional 36 diverse cowpea accessions supported the development of a genotyping assay for 51 128 SNPs, which was then applied to five bi‐parental RIL populations to produce a consensus genetic map containing 37 372 SNPs. This genetic map enabled the anchoring of 100 Mb of WGS and 420 Mb of BAC sequences, an exploration of genetic diversity along each linkage group, and clarification of macrosynteny between cowpea and common bean. The SNP assay enabled a diversity analysis of materials from West African breeding programs. Two major subpopulations exist within those materials, one of which has significant parentage from South and East Africa and more diversity. There are genomic regions of high differentiation between subpopulations, one of which coincides with a cluster of nodulin genes. The new resources and knowledge help to define goals and accelerate the breeding of improved varieties to address food security issues related to limited‐input small‐holder farming and climate stress

    Gunnera tinctoria invasions increase, not decrease, earthworm abundance and diversity

    Invasive plants often modify soil biotic communities through changes in soil physicochemical characteristics or the amount and/or quality of litter inputs. We assessed the impacts of Gunnera tinctoria invasions on soil and the earthworm community, on Achill Island, Co. Mayo, Ireland. We compared replicated (n = 5) areas invaded by G. tinctoria with uninvaded semi-natural grasslands, as well as with areas subjected to mechanical removal or herbicide treatment. Modifications in physiochemical properties included lower soil temperatures and higher soil pH during the summer in invaded areas, yet little effect on C and N stocks, or soil moisture. Marked differences in litter were observed, however, with invaded areas having c. 20-fold higher (above-ground) litter input than uninvaded ones, as well as lower C:N ratio (17 vs. 29). This was associated with a significantly higher overall abundance and biomass of earthworms in invaded plots (375 individuals m–2, 115 g biomass m–2), compared to the uninvaded control (130 individuals m–2, 45 g biomass m–2), with removal treatments having intermediate values. Earthworm communities comprised 10 species, typical for Irish grasslands, dominated by the common endogeic species Allolobophora chlorotica, Aporrectodea caliginosa and Aporrectodea rosea. Both earthworm species richness and Shannon diversity were significantly higher in invaded areas, but only in spring samples.     The genome of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata [L.] Walp.)

    [EN] Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata [L.] Walp.) is a major crop for worldwide food and nutritional security, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, that is resilient to hot and drought-prone environments. An assembly of the single-haplotype inbred genome of cowpea IT97K-499-35 was developed by exploiting the synergies between single-molecule real-time sequencing, optical and genetic mapping, and an assembly reconciliation algorithm. A total of 519 Mb is included in the assembled sequences. Nearly half of the assembled sequence is composed of repetitive elements, which are enriched within recombination-poor pericentromeric regions. A comparative analysis of these elements suggests that genome size differences between Vigna species are mainly attributable to changes in the amount of Gypsy retrotransposons. Conversely, genes are more abundant in more distal, high-recombination regions of the chromosomes; there appears to be more duplication of genes within the NBS-LRR and the SAUR-like auxin superfamilies compared with other warm-season legumes that have been sequenced. A surprising outcome is the identification of an inversion of 4.2 Mb among landraces and cultivars, which includes a gene that has been associated in other plants with interactions with the parasitic weed Striga gesnerioides. The genome sequence facilitated the identification of a putative syntelog for multiple organ gigantism in legumes. A revised numbering system has been adopted for cowpea chromosomes based on synteny with common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris).     Psychological Determinants of Consumer Acceptance of Personalised Nutrition in 9 European Countries

    YesObjective: To develop a model of the psychological factors which predict people’s intention to adopt personalised nutrition. Potential determinants of adoption included perceived risk and benefit, perceived self-efficacy, internal locus of control and health commitment. Methods: A questionnaire, developed from exploratory study data and the existing theoretical literature, and including validated psychological scales was administered to N = 9381 participants from 9 European countries (Germany, Greece, Ireland, Poland, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, the UK, and Norway). Results: Structural equation modelling indicated that the greater participants’ perceived benefits to be associated with personalised nutrition, the more positive their attitudes were towards personalised nutrition, and the greater their intention to adopt it. Higher levels of nutrition self-efficacy were related to more positive attitudes towards, and a greater expressed intention to adopt, personalised nutrition. Other constructs positively impacting attitudes towards personalised nutrition included more positive perceptions of the efficacy of regulatory control to protect consumers (e.g. in relation to personal data protection), higher self-reported internal health locus of control, and health commitment. Although higher perceived risk had a negative relationship with attitude and an inverse relationship with perceived benefit, its effects on attitude and intention to adopt personalised nutrition was less influential than perceived benefit. The model was stable across the different European countries, suggesting that psychological factors determining adoption of personalised nutrition have generic applicability across different European countries.     Appeals to evidence for the resolution of wicked problems: the origins and mechanisms of evidentiary bias

    Wicked policy problems are often said to be characterized by their ‘intractability’, whereby appeals to evidence are unable to provide policy resolution. Advocates for ‘Evidence Based Policy’ (EBP) often lament these situations as representing the misuse of evidence for strategic ends, while critical policy studies authors counter that policy decisions are fundamentally about competing values, with the (blind) embrace of technical evidence depoliticizing political decisions. This paper aims to help resolve these conflicts and, in doing so, consider how to address this particular feature of problem wickedness. Specifically the paper delineates two forms of evidentiary bias that drive intractability, each of which is reflected by contrasting positions in the EBP debates: ‘technical bias’ - referring to invalid uses of evidence; and ‘issue bias’ - referring to how pieces of evidence direct policy agendas to particular concerns. Drawing on the fields of policy studies and cognitive psychology, the paper explores the ways in which competing interests and values manifest in these forms of bias, and shape evidence utilization through different mechanisms. The paper presents a conceptual framework reflecting on how the nature of policy problems in terms of their complexity, contestation, and polarization can help identify the potential origins and mechanisms of evidentiary bias leading to intractability in some wicked policy debates. The discussion reflects on whether being better informed about such mechanisms permit future work that may lead to strategies to mitigate or overcome such intractability in the future

    The Association Between Hypertension and Insomnia Among Saudi Population: A Cross-Sectional Study

    Objective To assess the relationship between hypertension and insomnia among the Saudi population. Methods The study will employ a cross-sectional design to investigate the association between hypertension and insomnia among the Saudi population. This design allows for the collection of data at a single point in time, offering insights into the relationship between the variables. Results The study included 581 participants. The most frequent age among them was 18-28 (n= 266, 45.8 Per Cent), followed by 29-39 (n= 129, 22.2 Per Cent). The most frequent gender among study participants was female (n= 320, 55.1 Per Cent), followed by male (n= 261, 44.9 Per Cent). Study participants' most frequent body mass index was normal 18.5-24.9 kg/m2 (n= 231, 39.8 Per Cent) followed by overweight 25-29.9 kg/m2 (n= 200, 34.4 Per Cent). Marital status among study participants, with most of them being single (n=283, 48.7 Per Cent) followed by married (n= 238, 41 Per Cent). The number of hours of sleep during the day among study participants with most of them had 6-8 hours. Participants were asked if they had difficulty sleeping. There most of the participants were nothing (n= 201, 34.6 Per Cent). On the other hand, 154 participants had middle (26.5 Per Cent). They asked if they had difficulty staying asleep. There most of the participants were nothing (n= 227, 39.1 Per Cent). On the other hand, 152 participants had middle (26.2 Per Cent). Participants were asked if they had trouble waking up early. There most of the participants were nothing (n= 189, 32.5 Per Cent). Followed by middle (n=148, 25.5 Per Cent). Conclusion The results of the study showed that most of the study participants were of normal weight according to their body mass index. Most of them are single. Most participants sleep approximately 6-8 hours a day. The largest percentage of participants work in the government or private sector. Most of them had good social contact
