Crystalline-Size Dependence of Dual Emission Peak on Hybrid Organic Lead-Iodide Perovskite Films at Low Temperatures
In this work, we have investigated the crystalline-size dependence of optical absorption and photolumines-cence emission of CH3NH3PbI3 films, which is necessary to identify the potencial practical applications of the gadgets based on perovskite films. This study was carried out at low temperatures to minimize the extra complexity induced by thermal effects. The purpose was clarifying the origin of the dual emission peak previously reported in literature. We have found that the grain-size is responsible of the appearance or disappearance of this dual emission on CH3NH3PbI3 at low temperatures, whereas we have inferred that the thickness of the perovskite layer is a much more important factor than the size of the grains in the location of the energy of the bandgap. Moreover, the increase in the grain size allows slowing down the phase transition. Additionally, we evidence a decrease in the effective Rydberg energy of the exciton in several samples, from 23-25 meV at 7 K to 12-13 meV at 165 K, by fitting to Elliot-Toyozawa theory. We have extracted other im-portant physical parameters of perovskites from the photoluminescence-data deconvolution, such as bandgap, exciton-phonon interaction and exciton binding energy. A new phase transition at 45.5 K was determined by the temperature dependence of full width at half maximum and integrated intensity of the photoluminescence, and it was confirmed by the radiative lifetime obtained from the time-resolved photoluminescence emission by mean of time-correlated single photon counting at different temperatures, excitation fluencies and emission energies
NS3 genomic sequencing and phylogenetic analysis as alternative to a commercially available assay to reliably determine hepatitis C virus subtypes 1a and 1b
Objective: To evaluate the use of hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS3 sequencing as alternative to the comercially available Versant HCV 2.0 reverse hybridization line-probe assay (LiPA 2.0) to determine HCV genotype 1 (HCV-1) subtypes. Patients and methods: A cohort of 104 patients infected by HCV-1 according to LiPA 2.0 was analyzed in a cross-sectional study conducted in patients seen from January 2012 to June 2016 at an outpatient clinic in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Results: The samples were included within well supported subtype clades: 64 with HCV-1b and 39 with HCV-1a infection. Twenty of the HCV-1a infected patientes were included in a supported sub-clade “1” and 19 individuals were among the basal sub-clade “2”. LiPA 2.0 failed to subtype HCV-1 in 20 (19.2%) individuals. Subtype classification determined by NS3 direct sequencing showed that 2/18 (11.1%) of the HCV-1a-infected patients as determined by LiPA 2.0 were in fact infected by HCV-1b. Of the HCV-1b-infected according to LiPA 2.0, 10/66 (15.2%) patients showed HCV-1a infection according to NS3 sequencing. Overall misclassification was 14.3% (κ-index for the concordance with NS3 sequencing = 0.635). One (1%) patient was erroneously genotyped as HCV-1 and was revealed as HCV genotype 4 infection. Conclusions: Genomic sequencing of the HCV NS3 region represents an adequate alternative since it provides reliable genetic information. It even distinguishes between HCV-1a clades related to resistance-associated substitutions to HCV protease inhibitors, it provides reliable genetic information for genotyping/subgenotyping and simultaneously allows to determine the presence of resistance-associated substitutions to currently recommended DAAs.Fil: Neukam, Karin. Food-Based Dietary Guidelines around the World: A Comparative Analysis to Update AESAN Scientific Committee Dietary Recommendations
Food-Based Dietary Guidelines (FBDG) include dietary recommendations based on food groups according to the general and accepted nutrition principles and current scientific evidence. Adoption of FBDG contributes to the prevention of malnutrition in all its forms, promotes human health, and reduces environmental impact. The present review aims to perform an international comparative analysis of the FBDG adopted in different countries from three different continents (America, Asia, and Europe), with particular reference to the Spanish Food Safety and Nutrition Agency (AESAN, Agencia Española de Seguridad Alimentaria y Nutrición) Scientific Committee dietary recommendations. A total of twelve countries with the most updated FBDG and/or closest to the traditional and cultural preferences of Spain were finally selected. All the reviewed FBDG provided recommendations for fruits, vegetables, cereals, legumes, nuts, milk and dairy products, meat and derivatives, fish, eggs, water, and oil; however, remarkable differences regarding recommended amounts were found among countries
Molecular epidemiology of hepatitis B virus mutants associated with vaccine-escape, drug-resistance and diagnosis failure
The massive implementation of the vaccine and antiviral agents against hepatitis B virus (HBV), targeting the envelope and viral polymerase genes, induces a selection pressure that might lead to the emergence of variants that impair the effectiveness of the vaccine, diagnostic methods and antiviral therapy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of HBV vaccine escape mutants (VEMs), diagnostic failure mutants (DFMs) and treatment resistance mutants (ARMs) among individuals from Buenos Aires, Argentina. HBV surface antigen and polymerase sequences obtained from serum samples of 530 HBV-infected individuals were analysed. Samples belonged to genotypes A (28.1%), D (13.6%) and F (58.3%). VEMs, DMFs and ARMs were present in 40 (7.5%), 57 (10.7%) and 27 (5.1%) samples within the studied population. Additionally, eight nonpreviously reported VEMs and nine DFMs were identified. VEMs and DFMs were biased by genotype, being higher in genotype D (33.3% and 33.3%) compared to genotype A (6% and 17.4%) and genotype F (2.3% and 2.3%) (P > 0.001). On the contrary, there was no association between the presence of ARMs and HBV genotype (P = 0.324). VEMs, DFMs and ARMs create public health concerns. The current study provided valuable information about mutants in surface antigen and polymerase in HBV-infected patients from Argentina where HBV-F is the most prevalent genotype. Consequently, it constitutes an important reference for Latin American clinicians in order to optimize the management of HBV-infected patients.Fil: Di Lello, Federico Alejandro. Cosmology with the SKA: theoretical prospectives
We briefly review the context of the SKA in the panorama of modern Cosmology. The SKA will undoubtedly be one of the most powerful tools for Cosmology during the first half of the XXIst century. Many of the fundamental questions of modern Cosmology, such as the nature of the dark energy and dark matter that dominate the dynamics of the Universe, will be answered by SKA-driven science. Moreover, SKA will shed light on many aspects of large-scale structure growth and galaxy formation as well as fundamental Physics regarding the early Universe, inflation and tests of General Relativity.The authors acknowledge partial support from the Spanish MINECO through projects AYA2013-

Phylogenetic analysis of SARS‐CoV‐2 in the first few months since its emergence
During the first months of SARS‐CoV‐2 evolution in a new host, contrasting hypotheses have been proposed about the way the virus has evolved and diversified worldwide. The aim of this study was to perform a comprehensive evolutionary analysis to describe the human outbreak and the evolutionary rate of different genomic regions of SARS‐CoV‐2.The molecular evolution in nine genomic regions of SARS‐CoV‐2 was analyzed using three different approaches: phylogenetic signal assessment, emergence of amino acid substitutions, and Bayesian evolutionary rate estimation in eight successive fortnights since the virus emergence.All observed phylogenetic signals were very low and tree topologies were in agreement with those signals. However, after four months of evolution, it was possible to identify regions revealing an incipient viral lineage formation despite the low phylogenetic signal, since fortnight 3. Finally, the SARS‐CoV‐2 evolutionary rate for regions nsp3 and S, the ones presenting greater variability, was estimated as 1.37 x 10‐3 and 2.19 x 10‐3 substitution/site/year, respectively.In conclusion, results from this work about the variable diversity of crucial viral regions and determination of the evolutionary rate are consequently decisive to understand essential features of viral emergence. Evolutionary analysis of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein for its different clades
The spike protein of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has become the main target for antiviral and vaccine development. Despite its relevance, e information is scarse about its evolutionary traces. The aim of this study was to investigate the diversification patterns of the spike for each clade of SARS-CoV-2 through different approaches. Two thousand and one hundred sequences representing the seven clades of the SARS-CoV-2 were included. Patterns of genetic diversifications and nucleotide evolutionary rate were estimated for the spike genomic region. The haplotype networks showed a star shape, where multiple haplotypes with few nucleotide differences diverge from a common ancestor. Four hundred seventy-nine different haplotypes were defined in the seven analyzed clades. The main haplotype, named Hap-1, was the most frequent for clades G (54%), GH (54%), and GR (56%) and a different haplotype (named Hap-252) was the most important for clades L (63.3%), O (39.7%), S (51.7%), and V (70%). The evolutionary rate for the spike protein was estimated as 1.08 × 10−3 nucleotide substitutions/site/year. Moreover, the nucleotide evolutionary rate after nine months of the pandemic was similar for each clade. In conclusion, the present evolutionary analysis is relevant as the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 is the target for most therapeutic candidates; besides, changes in this protein could have consequences on viral transmission, response to antivirals and efficacy of vaccines. Moreover, the evolutionary characterization of clades improves knowledge of SARS-CoV-2 and deserves to be assessed in more detail as re-infection by different phylogenetic clades has been reported.Fil: Pereson Moschen, Matias Javier. Collagen sequence analysis of the extinct giant ground sloths <i>Lestodon</i> and <i>Megatherium</i>
For over 200 years, fossils of bizarre extinct creatures have been described from the Americas that have ranged from giant ground sloths to the 'native' South American ungulates, groups of mammals that evolved in relative isolation on South America. Ground sloths belong to the South American xenarthrans, a group with modern although morphologically and ecologically very different representatives (anteaters, armadillos and sloths), which has been proposed to be one of the four main eutherian clades. Recently, proteomics analyses of bone collagen have recently been used to yield a molecular phylogeny for a range of mammals including the unusual 'Malagasy aardvark' shown to be most closely related to the afrotherian tenrecs, and the south American ungulates supporting their morphological association with condylarths. However, proteomics results generate partial sequence information that could impact upon the phylogenetic placement that has not been appropriately tested. For comparison, this paper examines the phylogenetic potential of proteomicsbased sequencing through the analysis of collagen extracted from two extinct giant ground sloths, Lestodon and Megatherium. The ground sloths were placed as sister taxa to extant sloths, but with a closer relationship between Lestodon and the extant sloths than the basal Megatherium. These results highlight that proteomics methods could yield plausible phylogenies that share similarities with other methods, but have the potential to be more useful in fossils beyond the limits of ancient DNA survival.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse
Dietary total antioxidant capacity is inversely related to central adiposity as well as to metabolic and oxidative stress markers in healthy young adults
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Dietary total antioxidant capacity (TAC) has been assumed as a useful tool to assess the relationship between the cumulative antioxidant food capacity and several chronic disorders. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the potential relationships of dietary TAC with adiposity, metabolic and oxidative stress markers in healthy young adults.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This study enrolled 266 healthy subjects (105 men/ 161 women; 22 ± 3 years-old; 22.0 ± 2.7 kg/m<sup>2</sup>). Dietary intake, anthropometry, blood pressure, lifestyle features, and biochemical data were assessed with validated procedures.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In linear regression analyses, dietary TAC values were inversely associated with glycemia, total cholesterol:HDL-c ratio, triglycerides and oxidized-LDL concentrations, and positively associated with HDL-c concentrations, independently of gender, age, smoking status, physical activity, vitamin use supplement, waist circumference, energy intake, fatty acid intake. In addition, plasma TAC was negatively correlated with ox-LDL concentrations (<it>r</it>= -0.20, <it>P </it>= 0.003), independently of the assessed confounding variables. Finally, dietary TAC values were inversely related to waist circumference values (<it>r</it>= -0.17, <it>P </it>= 0.005) as well as to lower mild central obesity occurrence (waist circumference ≥ 80/ 94 cm for women/ men, respectively).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Dietary TAC values are inversely associated with glucose and lipid biomarkers as well as with central adiposity measurements in healthy young adults, indicating dietary TAC as a useful tool to assess the health benefits of cumulative antioxidant capacity from food intake. In addition, the independent and inverse relationships of ox-LDL concentrations with dietary and plasma TAC respectively suggest a putative role of antioxidant rich-diet in the link between redox state and atherogenesis at early stage.</p
