Integration of STEM Education in Differential and Integral Calculus classes: Aspects Evidenced in a Mathematical Modelling Activity

Background: The integration of STEM areas (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) in engineering courses has been the focus of research in the educational context and mathematical modelling has the potential for its success. Objectives: The research question that guides the discussion is: What aspects of STEM education can be evidenced when engineering students develop mathematical modelling activities in a virtual environment within the scope of a Differential and Integral Calculus course? Design: Qualitative research carried out in the second half of 2020, based on research design guidelines, in the Differential and Integral Calculus subject during remote teaching. Setting and Participants: Virtual environment shared by two classes with 72 students from different courses for the development of a mathematical modelling activity. Data collection and analysis: Data from 18 groups were collected virtually from notes on the wiki, audio or video recordings of group meetings or orientation meetings, activity communication video and individual response to a questionnaire. The analysis was based on an initial coding of data from all groups, carried out with the support of AtlasTi, in which three groups were selected for a detailed analysis related to aspects of STEM education. Results: Some groups naturally integrate the four STEM areas and others carry out this integration in a partial way. Conclusions: The virtual environment made it possible for students to interact in their groups and collaborate with each other to solve a problem in a way that knowledge of basic sciences and mathematics were articulated

Novo modelo de transformação social, a tecnologia se encontra no cerne das influentes modificações. Em um contexto de uma sociedade sempre mais conectada, as fronteiras começam a se mitigar, e o conceito de tempo também sofre disparidades, ante a velocidade das informações, denominando essa nova configuração social de “Sociedade em Rede” termo cunhado pelo sociólogo Manuel Castells. A internet se configura como a grande tecnologia desses tempos, e quanto mais “eus virtuais” estão no ciberespaço, mais a sociedade também se demonstra vulnerável ante as novas constatações. Nesse toar, encontra-se a importância a ser dada à proteção de dados pessoais no âmbito virtual. Opinion of nursing students on realistic simulation and the curriculum internship in hospital setting

Objetivo: Comparar a opinião dos estudantes de graduação em enfermagem sobre a simulação realística e sobre o estágio curricular em cenário hospitalar. Métodos: Estudo comparativo realizado com 55 estudantes de enfermagem, divididos em: grupo controle que realizou estágio curricular em cenário hospitalar e grupo experimental realizou simulação realística antes do cenário hospitalar. Ambos os grupos responderam um instrumento baseado na escala de Likert para verificação da efetividade das duas estratégias de ensino. Resultados: No grupo experimental, 69,0% concordaram totalmente que a simulação consolidava o processo de ensino-aprendizagem. No grupo controle, muitos estudantes (38,5%) discordaram totalmente com o estágio em cenário hospitalar como estratégia isolada. Conclusão: A simulação realística foi efetiva na opinião dos estudantes de enfermagem para adquirir e aperfeiçoar conhecimentos e segurança, além de desenvolver o raciocínio crítico frente às situações clínicas comuns ao cotidiano da prática assistencial do enfermeiro.Objective: Comparing the opinion of undergraduate nursing students about the realistic simulation and the curricular internship in a hospital setting. Methods: A comparative study with 55 nursing students who were divided into a control group that did a curriculum internship in a hospital setting, and an experimental group that participated of a realistic simulation prior to the hospital setting. Both groups answered an instrument based on the Likert scale to verify the effectiveness of the two teaching strategies. Results: In the experimental group, 69 % totally agreed that the simulation consolidated the teaching-learning process. In the control group, most students (38.5 %) totally disagreed with the internship in the hospital setting as an isolated strategy. Conclusion: In the opinion of nursing students, the realistic simulation was effective to acquire and refine knowledge and security, in addition to develop critical thinking in face of the common routine clinical situations in nursing care practice

The applicability of the theory of cultural care from nurses in periodics about health of brazil (1992-2011)

Objective: To describe and analyze the applicability of the Theory of Cultural Care on research published in the journals of Nursing Brazil, in the period 1992-2011. Method: Literature captured 59 articles highlighting origin, year of publication, subject and area of nursing knowledge. Results: The analysis reveals the existence of articles in all areas of nursing, which shows the scope of acceptance of the theory. However, the Brazilian tendency for applicability in the area "Maternal child" with 42,3% of the articles that addressed the cultural values that interfere with the process of giving birth. Conclusion: The Theory of Cultural Care is a proposal to offer a universal care, and meet the diversity of each individual, their world and values which influence their reactions. In Brazil there are few articles with the applicability of the theory, however Nursing is using the same in all areas of its operations

Occupational hazards for nursing professionals related to the reuse and single use of the dialyzer

Objective: To compare the reports of occupational events recorded by nursing professionals during the periods of reuse and single use of the dialyzer. Method: Retrospective longitudinal study with electronic medical records from nursing technicians of a hemodialysis service. Data were analyzed descriptively and Rate ratio. Results: During the reuse of the dialyzer, there were seven events from five professionals reporting musculoskeletal disorders, ocular allergies and dermatosis. During single use, two professionals reported low back pain. The rate ratio of medication use was 6.7 days for every 1000 professionals during the reuse period and 1.52 days in the single use period (RR=4.4; 95% CI 2.182-9.805). Anti-inflammatory drugs were the most prescribed, and sick leaves were similar in both periods. Conclusion: Dialyzer reuse was associated with musculoskeletal disorders, ocular irritation, dermatosis and increased use of medications by professionals. Ações de extensão no ensino médio: química verde e desenvolvimento sustentável / Extension actions in high school: green chemistry and sustainable development

O ensino de Química orientado a critérios de sustentabilidade concebe a educação como ferramenta essencial para se alcançar o desenvolvimento sustentável e busca promover experiências químicas que não produzam substâncias perigosas e reduzam ao máximo os riscos no tratamento de resíduos. Sob esta perspectiva, este trabalho apresenta os resultados parciais das ações de um projeto de extensão, financiado pela Pró-Reitoria do Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Rio Grande do Norte, com o objetivo de difundir o conhecimento sobre os Princípios da Química Verde no ensino de Química, no âmbito de uma escola da rede estadual no oeste potiguar. Trata-se de um trabalho de natureza qualitativa no campo das Ciências Naturais, que possibilita o diálogo entre todos os implicados no projeto, de maneira que se possa buscar coletivamente as explicações, saberes e possíveis soluções a problemas reais do contexto onde são desenvolvidas as atividades do projeto. O projeto em execução se configura como uma referência válida não só para o ensino de Química, mas para o ensino nas diversas áreas do conhecimento, mediante um tratamento interdisciplinar com os princípios da Química Verde. Para tanto, já foram realizadas capacitação dos bolsistas e voluntários sobre a temática; formação teórica dos discentes beneficiados e aplicação prática dos princípios da Química Verde relacionados aos conteúdos de cinética química e reações endotérmicas e exotérmicas. O desafio do trabalho em questão consiste em desenvolver uma práxis que se caracterize pela inclusão dos princípios da Química Verde no currículo e nas práticas curriculares no Ensino Médio.

Pesquisa narrativa e audiodescrição: outra opção metodológica

Narrative research is a methodology that consists in collecting stories about a particular subject in search of information to understand a specific phenomenon. In general, it is used as a resource to give voice to the subjects of a study. In this article, we present an example of how narrative research can be used as an alternative to traditional reception studies in the area of audio description (AD). To do so, we look at the methodological path of the doctoral thesis entitled Para além do visível: princípios para uma audiodescrição menos visocêntrica, in which two autobiographies by people with acquired blindness were analyzed: Touching the Rock, by John Hull, and Out of Darkness: A Memoir, by Zoltan Torey. The works were studied through the use of narrative research methodology, and thematic analysis as devised by Braun and Clarke. The analysis undertaken emphasized the importance of elements such as respect for the different profiles of the target audience, the inclusion of early and continued high-quality exposure, and the association of AD with multisensory experiences.A Pesquisa Narrativa é uma metodologia que consiste na coleta de histórias sobre um determinado assunto em busca de informações para entender um fenômeno específico. Image and culture: from caves to digital imaging

Neste artigo será apresentada uma contextualização teórica acerca dos principais conceitos culturais que criam a comunicação imagética e edificam o imaginário contemporâneo, serão analisadas as formas peculiares com que a imagem se transforma em imagem digital e como o dispositivo da virtualização se torna cerne desta transformação. O virtual rompe do ponto de vista semiótico com uma proposta dialógica da analogia, que desde o advento das imagens técnicas foi o elo para uma construção de um imaginário moderno. Portanto, sobre este pretexto discutir a imagem é discutir a intercomunicação imagética. Portanto, o presente artigo buscará a construção de uma teoria própria, multidisciplinar, híbrida e, portanto, legítima representante dos Estudos Culturais, propor um conceito de imagem digital que seja verossímil diante do desafio contemporâneo de uma realidade cultural fragmentária, líquida e, sobretudo, norteada pelos fluxos das redes.In this article we will present a theoretical contextualization about the main cultural concepts that create the imagetic communication and build the contemporary imaginary. We will analyze the peculiar ways in which the image becomes a digital image and how the virtualization device becomes the core of this transformation.
