    Moving in the anthropocene: global reductions in terrestrial mammalian movements

    Animal movement is fundamental for ecosystem functioning and species survival, yet the effects of the anthropogenic footprint on animal movements have not been estimated across species. Using a unique GPS-tracking database of 803 individuals across 57 species, we found that movements of mammals in areas with a comparatively high human footprint were on average one-half to one-third the extent of their movements in areas with a low human footprint. We attribute this reduction to behavioral changes of individual animals and to the exclusion of species with long-range movements from areas with higher human impact. Global loss of vagility alters a key ecological trait of animals that affects not only population persistence but also ecosystem processes such as predator-prey interactions, nutrient cycling, and disease transmission

    Habitat modification is a major threat to biodiversity, in which the savanna-like Cerrado biome has been under high disturbances for the last decades. In Brazil, São Paulo state contains few native remnants of Cerrado surrounded by anthropogenic matrix. Here we report the medium and large-sized mammal species found in a private property of a rural area of São Paulo. Using camera trapping, we surveyed mammals from 2013 to 2018, and recorded 21 species of which five were exotic. The observed and estimated species richness were alike in the first year of sampling, but from 2014 onwards, the differences in richness increased. The most recorded species was the coati (Nasua nasua), followed by the puma (Puma concolor) and the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla). The presence of exotic species indicates anthropogenic influence. Small natural remnants in private lands might work as ecological corridors, highlighting their importance in the southern domain of the Cerrado

    A educação ambiental é desenvolvida de forma multidisciplinar na Escola de Artes Moinho Cultural Sul-Americano, em Corumbá, nas “Ilhas Culturais”. Dentro dessa atividade, realizou-se o projeto “Brincando e se divertindo com as árvores”, cujo enfoque foi a mata ciliar pantaneira. O presente trabalho, realizado em setembro de 2010 em sessões contínuas, teve por objetivo sensibilizar para a importância dessa mata. Pesquisas foram realizadas para basear a criação e o desenvolvimento das dinâmicas: a) Quebra-cabeça: montagem e descoberta de árvores da mata ciliar; b) Teia: compreender o equilíbrio do meio ambiente e; c) Autógrafo: ensinar características e nomes das plantas. Houve 21 participantes com reincidência, demonstrando interesse pelo tema. Observou-se um aprendizado mútuo entre participantes e ministrantes. Atividades focadas no ambiente são importantes no aprendizado, além de estimular mudança de atitude nos participantes

    Terrestrial Mammal Displacement Data

    This data file includes median (0.5 quantile) and long-distance (0.95 quantile) displacement distances for 803 individuals spanning 57 terrestrial mammal species. Also included are mean body mass, trophic guild, mean Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and mean human footprint index values for each individual. Displacement values are in kilometres and body mass values are in grams. The displacement and body mass values are log10 transformed and the NDVI values are scaled. Please note that each row within a time interval represents a different individual.     Neotropical xenarthrans: a dataset of occurrence of xenarthran species in the Neotropics.

    International audienceXenarthrans—anteaters, sloths, and armadillos—have essential functions forecosystem maintenance, such as insect control and nutrient cycling, playing key roles as ecosys-tem engineers. Because of habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting pressure, and conflicts withdomestic dogs, these species have been threatened locally, regionally, or even across their fulldistribution ranges. The Neotropics harbor 21 species of armadillos, 10 anteaters, and 6 sloths.Our data set includes the families Chlamyphoridae (13), Dasypodidae (7), Myrmecophagidae(3), Bradypodidae (4), and Megalonychidae (2). We have no occurrence data onDasypus pilo-sus(Dasypodidae). Regarding Cyclopedidae, until recently, only one species was recognized,but new genetic studies have revealed that the group is represented by seven species. In thisdata paper, we compiled a total of 42,528 records of 31 species, represented by occurrence andquantitative data, totaling 24,847 unique georeferenced records. The geographic range is fromthe southern United States, Mexico, and Caribbean countries at the northern portion of theNeotropics, to the austral distribution in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. Regardinganteaters,Myrmecophaga tridactylahas the most records (n=5,941), andCyclopessp. havethe fewest (n=240). The armadillo species with the most data isDasypus novemcinctus(n=11,588), and the fewest data are recorded forCalyptophractus retusus(n=33). Withregard to sloth species,Bradypus variegatushas the most records (n=962), andBradypus pyg-maeushas the fewest (n=12). Our main objective with Neotropical Xenarthrans is to makeoccurrence and quantitative data available to facilitate more ecological research, particularly ifwe integrate the xenarthran data with other data sets of Neotropical Series that will become available very soon (i.e., Neotropical Carnivores, Neotropical Invasive Mammals, andNeotropical Hunters and Dogs). Therefore, studies on trophic cascades, hunting pressure,habitat loss, fragmentation effects, species invasion, and climate change effects will be possiblewith the Neotropical Xenarthrans data set.
