Natural versus anthropic influence on north adriatic coast detected by geochemical analyses
This study focused on the geochemical and sedimentological characterization of recent sediments from two marine sites (S1 and E1) located in the North Adriatic Sea, between the Po River prodelta and the Rimini coast. Major and trace metal concentrations reflect the drainage area of the Po River and its tributaries, considered one of the most polluted areas in Europe. Sediment geochemistry of the two investigated sites denote distinct catchment areas. High values of Cr, Ni, Pb and Zn detected in sediments collected in the Po River prodelta (S1 site) suggest the Po River supply, while lower levels of these elements characterize sediments collected in front of the Rimini coast (E1 site), an indication of Northern Apennines provenance. Historical trends of Pb and Zn reconstructed from the sedimentary record around the E1 site document several changes that can be correlated with the industrialization subsequent to World War II, the implementation of the environmental policy in 1976 and the effects of the Comacchio dumping at the end of 1980. At the S1 site, the down core distributions of trace elements indicate a reduction of contaminants due to the introduction of the Italian Law 319/76 and the implementation of anti-pollution policies on automotive Pb (unleaded fuels) in the second half of the 1980s
Plasma exchange in acute and chronic hyperviscosity syndrome: a rheological approach and guidelines study
Therapeutic plasma exchange is an extra-corporeal technique able to remove from blood macromolecules and/or replace deficient plasma factors. It is the treatment of choice in hyperviscosity syndrome, due to the presence of quantitatively or qualitatively abnormal plasma proteins such as paraproteins. In spite of a general consensus on the indications to therapeutic plasma exchange in hyperviscosity syndrome, data or guide lines about the criteria to plan the treatment are still lacking. We studied the rheological effect of plasma exchange in 20 patients with plasma hyperviscosity aiming to give data useful for a rational planning of the treatment. Moreover, we verified the clinical applicability of the estimation of plasma viscosity by means of Kawai's equation. Plasma exchange decreases plasma viscosity about 20-30% for session. Only one session is required to normalize plasma viscosity when it is 2.2 till to 6 mPas. A fourth session is useless, especially if the inter-session interval is < 15 days. By means of a polynomial equation, knowing basal-plasma viscosity and the disease of a patient, we can calculate the decrease of viscosity obtainable by each session of plasma exchange then the number of session required to normalize the viscosity. Kawai's equation is able to evaluate plasma viscosity in healthy volunteers, but it is not clinically reliable in paraproteinemias. [Pubmed] [Scholar] [EndNote] [BibTex
Graphene promotes axon elongation through local stall of Nerve Growth Factor signaling endosomes
Several works reported increased differentiation of neuronal cells grown on
graphene; however, the molecular mechanism driving axon elongation on this
material has remained elusive. Here, we study the axonal transport of nerve
growth factor (NGF), the neurotrophin supporting development of peripheral
neurons, as a key player in the time course of axonal elongation of dorsal root
ganglion neurons on graphene. We find that graphene drastically reduces the
number of retrogradely transported NGF vesicles in favor of a stalled
population in the first two days of culture, in which the boost of axon
elongation is observed. This correlates with a mutual charge redistribution,
observed via Raman spectroscopy and electrophysiological recordings.
Furthermore, ultrastructural analysis indicates a reduced microtubule distance
and an elongated axonal topology. Thus, both electrophysiological and
structural effects can account for graphene action on neuron development.
Unraveling the molecular players underneath this interplay may open new avenues
for axon regeneration applications
Incidence, mortality, and survival of hematological malignancies in Northern Italian patients: an update to 2020
BackgroundHematological malignancies (HMs) represent a heterogeneous group of diseases with diverse etiology, pathogenesis, and prognosis. HMs' accurate registration by Cancer Registries (CRs) is hampered by the progressive de-hospitalization of patients and the transition to molecular rather than microscopic diagnosis. Material and methodsA dedicated software capable of automatically identifying suspected HMs cases by combining several databases was adopted by Reggio Emilia Province CR (RE-CR). Besides pathological reports, hospital discharge archives, and mortality records, RE-CR retrieved information from general and biomolecular laboratories. Incidence, mortality, and 5-year relative survival (RS) reported according to age, sex, and 4 HMs' main categories, were noted. ResultsOverall, 7,578 HM cases were diagnosed from 1996 to 2020 by RE-CR. HMs were more common in males and older patients, except for Hodgkin Lymphoma and Follicular Lymphoma (FL). Incidence showed a significant increase for FL (annual percent change (APC)=3.0), Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPN) in the first period (APC=6.0) followed by a significant decrease (APC=-7.4), and Myelodysplastic Syndromes (APC=16.4) only in the first period. Over the years, a significant increase was observed in 5-year RS for Hodgkin -, Marginal Zone -, Follicular - and Diffuse Large B-cell-Lymphomas, MPN, and Acute Myeloid Leukemia. The availability of dedicated software made it possible to recover 80% of cases automatically: the remaining 20% required direct consultation of medical records. ConclusionsThe study emphasizes that HM registration needs to collect information from multiple sources. The digitalization of CRs is necessary to increase their efficiency
The Generation of Fullerenes
We describe an efficient new algorithm for the generation of fullerenes. Our
implementation of this algorithm is more than 3.5 times faster than the
previously fastest generator for fullerenes -- fullgen -- and the first program
since fullgen to be useful for more than 100 vertices. We also note a
programming error in fullgen that caused problems for 136 or more vertices. We
tabulate the numbers of fullerenes and IPR fullerenes up to 400 vertices. We
also check up to 316 vertices a conjecture of Barnette that cubic planar graphs
with maximum face size 6 are hamiltonian and verify that the smallest

The impact of the Little ice age on coccolithophores in the central Mediterranea Sea
The Little ice age (LIA) is the last episode of a series of Holocene climatic anomalies. There is still little knowledge on the response of the marine environment to the pronounced cooling of the LIA and to the transition towards the 20th century global warming. Here we present decadal-scale coccolithophore data from four short cores recovered from the central Mediterranean Sea (northern Sicily Channel and Tyrrhenian Sea), which on the basis of ²¹⁰Pb activity span the last 200-350 years. The lowermost part of the record of one of the cores from the Sicily Channel, Station 407, which extends down to 1650 AD, is characterized by drastic changes in productivity. Specifically, below 1850 AD, the decrease in abundance of F. profunda and the increase of placoliths, suggest increased productivity. The chronology of this change is related to the main phase of the Little Ice Age, which might have impacted the hydrography of the southern coast of Sicily and promoted vertical mixing in the water column. Maser radiation from collisionless shocks

It is motivated by the work of Begelman, Ergun and Rees [Astrophys. J. 625 , 51 (2005)] who argued that the cyclotron-maser instability occurs in localized magnetized collisionless shocks such as those expected in blazar jets. We report on recent research carried out to investigate electron acceleration at collisionless shocks and maser radiation associated with the accelerated electrons. We describe how electrons accelerated by lower-hybrid,waves at collisionless shocks generate cyclotron-maser radiation when the accelerated electrons move into regions of stronger magnetic fields. The electrons are accelerated along the magnetic field and magnetically compressed leading to the formation of an electron velocity distribution having a horseshoe shape due to conservation of the electron magnetic moment. Under certain conditions the horseshoe electron velocity distribution function is unstable to the cyclotron-maser instability [Bingham and Cairns, Phys. Plasmas 7, 3089 (2000); Melrose, Rev. Mod. Who Laughs at a Rape Joke? Illiberal Responsiveness in Rodrigo Duterte\u27s Philippines
When a presidential contender makes a joke about lusting over a dead Australian missionary, calls the Pope the son of a whore, and confesses to killing criminals during his tenure as city mayor, one could expect that this candidate would not go very far. But not in the year 2016. Dubbed as ‘the year of voting dangerously,’ the Philippines rode the tide of global discontent and gave landslide victory to the controversial Rodrigo Duterte. This chapter examines the discursive underpinnings of Duterte’s rise to power by focusing on the process in which his supporters made ethical calculations from listening to his official speeches, live performance on television debates, and broader discussions in news and social media during the campaign period. We argue that Duterte’s ‘crass politics’ is a push back to the dominant moral politics perpetuated by institutions associated to the Philippines\u27 liberal democratic elite. While we condemn the Duterte regime’s disregard for human rights and due process, especially in the context of his bloody war on drugs, we also advocate a closer look at the ethics of Duterte’s responsiveness to deep-seated injuries endured by his constituencies both among marginalised and middle-class communities. Through a careful yet critical unpacking of his ‘crass politics of responsiveness’ from ethnographic research with Duterte supporters and media analysis of Duterte’s public performances, we hope to put forward a precise understanding of the emerging moral politics that underpins this unorthodox regime
