Coding of Far and Near Space in Neglect Patients

    Get PDF
Far (extrapersonal) and near (peripersonal) spaces are behaviorally defined as the space outside armreaching distance and the space within arm-reaching distance. Animal and human studies have shown that this behavioral distinction corresponds in the brain to a composite neural architecture for space representation. In this paper we discuss how the activation of the neural correlates of far and near space can be modulated by the use of tools that change the effective spatial relationship between the agent’s body and the target object. When subjects reach for a far object with a tool, it is possible to show that far space is remapped as near. We shall also argue that space remapping may not occur when far space is reached by walking instead of using a tool

Search for light long-lived neutral particles that decay to collimated pairs of leptons or light hadrons in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for light long-lived neutral particles with masses in the O(MeV-GeV) range is presented. The analysis targets the production of long-lived dark photons in the decay of a Higgs boson produced via gluon-gluon fusion or in association with a W boson. Events that contain displaced collimated Standard Model fermions reconstructed in the calorimeter or muon spectrometer are selected in 139 fb−1 of √s = 13 TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Background estimates for contributions from Standard Model processes and instrumental effects are extracted from data. The observed event yields are consistent with the expected background. Exclusion limits are reported on the production cross-section times branching fraction as a function of the mean proper decay length cτ of the dark photon, or as a function of the dark-photon mass and kinetic mixing parameter that quantifies the coupling between the Standard Model and potential hidden (dark) sectors. A Higgs boson branching fraction above 1% is excluded at 95% CL for a Higgs boson decaying into two dark photons for dark-photon mean proper decay lengths between 10 mm and 250 mm and dark photons with masses between 0.4 GeV and 2 GeV

A search for R-parity-violating supersymmetry in final states containing many jets in pp collisions at √s=13TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for R-parity-violating supersymmetry in final states with high jet multiplicity is presented. The search uses 140fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at √s=13TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. The results are interpreted in the context of R-parity-violating supersymmetry models that feature prompt gluino-pair production decaying directly to three jets each or decaying to two jets and a neutralino which subsequently decays promptly to three jets. No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is observed and exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level are extracted. Gluinos with masses up to 1800 GeV are excluded when decaying directly to three jets. In the cascade scenario, gluinos with masses up to 2340 GeV are excluded for a neutralino with mass up to 1250 GeV

Relationships Between Religion and Intolerance Towards Muslims and Immigrants in Europe:A Multilevel Analysis

This paper examines relationships between religiosity and intolerance towards Muslims and immigrants among Europeans living in non-Muslim majority countries by applying multilevel modeling to European Values Study data (wave four, 2010). Thus relationships across 44 national contexts are analyzed. The analysis found large between-country differences in the overall levels of intolerance towards immigrants and Muslims. Eastern Europeans tend to be more intolerant than Western Europeans. In most countries Muslims are less accepted than immigrants,—a finding which reflects that in post-9/11 Europe Islamophobia is prevalent and many still see Muslims with suspicion. A key result is that believing matters for the citizen’s attitudes towards Muslims and immigrants. Across Europe, traditional and modern fuzzy beliefs in a Higher Being are strongly negatively related to intolerance towards immigrants and Muslims, while fundamentalism is positively related to both targets of intolerance. Religious practice and denominational belonging on the other hand matter far less for the citizen’s propensity to dislike the two out-groups. With the only exception of non-devout Protestants who do not practice their religion, members of religious denominations are not more intolerant than non-members. The findings are valid for the vast majority of countries although countries differ in the magnitude of the effects

A search for resonances decaying into a Higgs boson and a new particle X in the XH→qqbb final state with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
A search for heavy resonances decaying into a Higgs boson (HH) and a new particle (XX) is reported, utilizing 36.1 fb1^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at s=\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV collected during 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The particle XX is assumed to decay to a pair of light quarks, and the fully hadronic final state XHqqˉbbˉXH \rightarrow q\bar q'b\bar b is analysed. The search considers the regime of high XHXH resonance masses, where the XX and HH bosons are both highly Lorentz-boosted and are each reconstructed using a single jet with large radius parameter. A two-dimensional phase space of XHXH mass versus XX mass is scanned for evidence of a signal, over a range of XHXH resonance mass values between 1 TeV and 4 TeV, and for XX particles with masses from 50 GeV to 1000 GeV. All search results are consistent with the expectations for the background due to Standard Model processes, and 95% CL upper limits are set, as a function of XHXH and XX masses, on the production cross-section of the XHqqˉbbˉXH\rightarrow q\bar q'b\bar b resonance
