    Selección de melocotón de carne dura con alto contenido en azúcares y antioxidantes

Contribución de los autores originalmente presentada, como comunicación,en el XIV Congreso Nacional de Ciencias Hortícolas (SECH 2015): Retos de la Nueva Agricultura Mediterránea (Orihuela, 3-5 junio 2015).Existen muchos estudios sobre los efectos beneficiosos que el consumo de frutas, ricas en antioxidantes tiene sobre la salud humana. En particular, los compuestos fenólicos son potencialmente beneficiosos para la salud, por sus efectos en la prevención de enfermedades degenerativas, tales como hipertensión, Alzheimer, Parkinson o cáncer. Por esta razón en las últimas décadas, gran parte de los programas de mejora genética de melocotonero han incorporado estos atributos de calidad de fruto entre sus objetivos. El programa de mejora que se lleva a cabo en la Estación Experimental de Aula Dei centra sus objetivos en la selección de cultivares de melocotonero con alta calidad de fruto y adaptados a las condiciones mediterráneas. Para seleccionar cultivares con frutos ricos en compuestos bioactivos, con calidad organoléptica y nutricional, se han estudiado las poblaciones de melocotonero ‘BabyGold 9’ × ‘Crown Princess’ y ‘Andross’ × ‘Calante’. Se determinaron las concentraciones de vitamina C, fenoles totales, flavonoides, y la capacidad antioxidante del fruto mediante espectrofotometría y el contenido en azúcares individuales con HPLC-IR. Los frutos en ambas poblaciones, son melocotones amarillos, de carne dura y de cosecha media y tardía, con gran variación fenotípica en todos los caracteres analizados. Se han encontrado correlaciones positivas entre varios de los parámetros de calidad y los compuestos bioactivos estudiados. Combinando características favorables destacan por su potencial comercial una veintena de genotipos que ampliarán la oferta de cultivares de carne dura en el sector frutícola español.Este trabajo ha sido financiado por el MINECO (AGL-2008-00283, AGL2011-24576) y Gobierno de Aragón (A44).     The FEBEX benchmark test: case definition and comparison of modelling approaches

    The FEBEX (Full-scale Engineered Barriers Experiment in Crystalline Host Rock) ‘‘in situ’’ test was installed at the Grimsel Test Site underground laboratory (Switzerland) and is a near-to-real scale simulation of the Spanish reference concept of deep geological storage in crystalline host rock. A modelling exercise, aimed at predicting field behaviour, was divided in three parts. In Part A, predictions for both the total water inflow to the tunnel as well as the water pressure changes induced by the boring of the tunnel were required. In Part B, predictions for local field variables, such as temperature, relative humidity, stresses and displacements at selected points in the bentonite barrier, and global variables, such as the total input power to the heaters were required. In Part C, predictions for temperature, stresses, water pressures and displacements in selected points of the host rock were required. Ten Modelling Teams from Europe, North America and Japan were involved in the analysis of the test. Differences among approaches may be found in the constitutive models used, in the simplifications made to the balance equations and in the geometric symmetries considered. Several aspects are addressed in the paper: the basic THM physical phenomena which dominate the test response are discussed, a comparison of different modelling results with actual measurements is presented and a discussion is given to explain the performance of the various predictions.Peer Reviewe

    A horizon scan of priorities for coastal marine microbiome research

    Research into the microbiomes of natural environments is changing the way ecologists and evolutionary biologists view the importance of microbes in ecosystem function. This is particularly relevant in ocean environments, where microbes constitute the majority of biomass and control most of the major biogeochemical cycles, including those that regulate the Earth's climate. Coastal marine environments provide goods and services that are imperative to human survival and well-being (e.g. fisheries, water purification), and emerging evidence indicates that these ecosystem services often depend on complex relationships between communities of microorganisms (the ‘microbiome’) and their hosts or environment – termed the ‘holobiont’. Understanding of coastal ecosystem function must therefore be framed under the holobiont concept, whereby macroorganisms and their associated microbiomes are considered as a synergistic ecological unit. Here we evaluated the current state of knowledge on coastal marine microbiome research and identified key questions within this growing research area. Although the list of questions is broad and ambitious, progress in the field is increasing exponentially, and the emergence of large, international collaborative networks and well-executed manipulative experiments are rapidly advancing the field of coastal marine microbiome research

    La retinitis por citomegalovírus es una de las infecciones oculares oportunistas más frecuente en los pacientes con SIDA con  cd4 bajo; sin tratamiento es inevitable la ceguera, la cual se manifiesta  en semanas o meses, debida a la afectación retiniana extensa, desprendimiento de retina o atrofia óptica.La sífilis es otra patología que se asocia a infección por VIH, se reporta sífilis  secundaria en mayor porcentaje de los casos; siendo la uveítis por sífilis  pleomórfica, se presenta en la etapa secundaria. Las manifestaciones oculares más frecuentes ocurren en el segmento posterior, se presentan en un 80 % de los casos en pacientes con SIDA.Se presenta el reporte de caso por encontrarse coinfeccion de sífilis y citomegalovírus en un paciente en estadio SIDA.Palabras clave: SIDA, Panuveitis sifilítica, Citomegalovirus Ocular

    Fat1 deletion promotes hybrid EMT state, tumour stemness and metastasis

    FAT1, which encodes a protocadherin, is one of the most frequently mutated genes in human cancers1–5. However, the role and the molecular mechanisms by which FAT1 mutations control tumour initiation and progression are poorly understood. Here, using mouse models of skin squamous cell carcinoma and lung tumours, we found that deletion of Fat1 accelerates tumour initiation and malignant progression and promotes a hybrid epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) phenotype. We also found this hybrid EMT state in FAT1-mutated human squamous cell carcinomas. Skin squamous cell carcinomas in which Fat1 was deleted presented increased tumour stemness and spontaneous metastasis. We performed transcriptional and chromatin profiling combined with proteomic analyses and mechanistic studies, which revealed that loss of function of FAT1 activates a CAMK2–CD44–SRC axis that promotes YAP1 nuclear translocation and ZEB1 expression that stimulates the mesenchymal state. This loss of function also inactivates EZH2, promoting SOX2 expression, which sustains the epithelial state. Our comprehensive analysis identified drug resistance and vulnerabilities in FAT1-deficient tumours, which have important implications for cancer therapy. Our studies reveal that, in mouse and human squamous cell carcinoma, loss of function of FAT1 promotes tumour initiation, progression, invasiveness, stemness and metastasis through the induction of a hybrid EMT state

    Relation of IL28B Gene Polymorphism with Biochemical and Histological Features in Hepatitis C Virus-Induced Liver Disease

    BACKGROUND/AIMS: Polymorphism at the IL28B gene may modify the course of hepatitis C virus (HCV) chronic infection. Our aim was to study the influence of IL28B rs12979860 gene polymorphism on the biochemistry and pathology of HCV-induced disease in the clinical course from mild chronic hepatitis C to hepatocellular carcinoma. METHODS: We have determined the rs12979860 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) upstream IL28B gene in two groups of patients with HCV-induced chronic liver disease: 1) 268 patients (159 men) with biopsy-proven chronic hepatitis C, to analyse its relation with biochemical, virological and histological features; and 2) 134 patients (97 men) with HCV-related hepatocellular carcinoma. The distribution of the analysed SNP in hepatocellular carcinoma patients was compared with that found in untreated chronic hepatitis C patients. All patients were white and most were Spaniards. RESULTS: In multivariate analysis ALT values were higher (P = 0.001) and GGT values were lower (P<0.001) in chronic hepatitis C patients homozygotes for the major rs12979860C allele as compared with carriers of the mutated rs12979860T allele. Steatosis was more frequent (Odds ratio = 1.764, 95% C.I. 1.053-2.955) and severe (P = 0.026) in carriers of the rs12979860T allele. No relation was found between the analysed SNP and METAVIR scores for necroinflammation and fibrosis, and there were no differences in the distribution of the analysed SNP between hepatocellular carcinoma and untreated chronic hepatitis C patients. CONCLUSION: The IL28B rs12979860 polymorphism correlates with the biochemical activity and the presence and severity of liver steatosis in chronic hepatitis C

    Diagnostic accuracy of a clinical diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis: An international case-cohort study

    We conducted an international study of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) diagnosis among a large group of physicians and compared their diagnostic performance to a panel of IPF experts. A total of 1141 respiratory physicians and 34 IPF experts participated. Participants evaluated 60 cases of interstitial lung disease (ILD) without interdisciplinary consultation. Diagnostic agreement was measured using the weighted kappa coefficient (\u3baw). Prognostic discrimination between IPF and other ILDs was used to validate diagnostic accuracy for first-choice diagnoses of IPF and were compared using the Cindex. A total of 404 physicians completed the study. Agreement for IPF diagnosis was higher among expert physicians (\u3baw=0.65, IQR 0.53-0.72, p20 years of experience (C-index=0.72, IQR 0.0-0.73, p=0.229) and non-university hospital physicians with more than 20 years of experience, attending weekly MDT meetings (C-index=0.72, IQR 0.70-0.72, p=0.052), did not differ significantly (p=0.229 and p=0.052 respectively) from the expert panel (C-index=0.74 IQR 0.72-0.75). Experienced respiratory physicians at university-based institutions diagnose IPF with similar prognostic accuracy to IPF experts. Regular MDT meeting attendance improves the prognostic accuracy of experienced non-university practitioners to levels achieved by IPF experts

    El problema de los procesos irreversibles es uno de los más fas­cinantes de la Física Teórica. Mientras en otros campos, tales como la teoría de valencia o pro­cesos de equilibrio la teoría básica se conoce perfectamente y las únicas dificultades que presentan son de carácter puramente mate­mático, el campo de los procesos irreversibles se halla en formación, no existiendo todavía unos conceptos y métodos básicos totalmente establecidos. La importancia que estos procesos tienen en el estudio de los fe­nómenos de transporte es fundamental, tanto para los sistemas me­cánico cuánticos como clásicos. El hecho de que casi todos los tra­bajos estudien este problema en Mecánica Cuántica, haciendo todo lo más alguna aproximación a la Mecánica Clásica, nos llevó a plan­tear este trabajo en el que se estudian los Procesos Irreversibles di­rectamente en Mecánica Clásica sin inclusión de Mecánica Cuántica, puesto que los fenómenos de transporte en el dominio clásico son de palpitante actualidad científica..
