Chewing gum benefits sustained attention in the absence of task degradation.
OBJECTIVES: The present study examined the effect of chewing gum on sustained attention and associated changes in subjective alertness. METHODS: In a within-participants design, 20 participants completed an extended version of the sustained attention response task (SART: Robertson et al., 1997), both with and without chewing gum. Self-rated measures of alertness, contentedness, and calmness were taken before and after the SART. RESULTS: Chewing gum was associated with improved attentional task performance. This finding was not contingent upon a general decrease in attentional performance and was apparent at all stages of the task. Subjective measures of alertness, contentedness, and calmness were higher following the chewing of gum. Changes in sustained attention co-varied with subjective alertness. DISCUSSION: The effects of chewing gum on attention and alertness are consistent with past literature and were not contingent on declines in attention. Additionally, we found evidence that gum-induced changes in self-rated alertness and attention are related. Rapid planetesimal formation in turbulent circumstellar discs
The initial stages of planet formation in circumstellar gas discs proceed via
dust grains that collide and build up larger and larger bodies (Safronov 1969).
How this process continues from metre-sized boulders to kilometre-scale
planetesimals is a major unsolved problem (Dominik et al. 2007): boulders stick
together poorly (Benz 2000), and spiral into the protostar in a few hundred
orbits due to a head wind from the slower rotating gas (Weidenschilling 1977).
Gravitational collapse of the solid component has been suggested to overcome
this barrier (Safronov 1969, Goldreich & Ward 1973, Youdin & Shu 2002). Even
low levels of turbulence, however, inhibit sedimentation of solids to a
sufficiently dense midplane layer (Weidenschilling & Cuzzi 1993, Dominik et al.
2007), but turbulence must be present to explain observed gas accretion in
protostellar discs (Hartmann 1998). Here we report the discovery of efficient
gravitational collapse of boulders in locally overdense regions in the
midplane. The boulders concentrate initially in transient high pressures in the
turbulent gas (Johansen, Klahr, & Henning 2006), and these concentrations are
augmented a further order of magnitude by a streaming instability (Youdin &
Goodman 2005, Johansen, Henning, & Klahr 2006, Johansen & Youdin 2007) driven
by the relative flow of gas and solids. We find that gravitationally bound
clusters form with masses comparable to dwarf planets and containing a
distribution of boulder sizes. Gravitational collapse happens much faster than
radial drift, offering a possible path to planetesimal formation in accreting

Resource use data by patient report or hospital records: Do they agree?
Background: Economic evaluations alongside clinical trials are becoming increasingly common.
Cost data are often collected through the use of postal questionnaires; however, the accuracy of
this method is uncertain. We compared postal questionnaires with hospital records for collecting
data on physiotherapy service use.
Methods: As part of a randomised trial of orthopaedic medicine compared with orthopaedic
surgery we collected physiotherapy use data on a group of patients from retrospective postal
questionnaires and from hospital records.
Results: 315 patients were referred for physiotherapy. Hospital data on attendances was available
for 30% (n = 96), compared with 48% (n = 150) of patients completing questionnaire data (95% Cl
for difference = 10% to 24%); 19% (n = 59) had data available from both sources. The two methods
produced an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.54 (95% Cl 0.31 to 0.70). However, the two
methods produced significantly different estimates of resource use with patient self report recalling
a mean of 1.3 extra visits (95% Cl 0.4 to 2.2) compared with hospital records.
Conclusions: Using questionnaires in this study produced data on a greater number of patients
compared with examination of hospital records. However, the two data sources did differ in the
quantity of physiotherapy used and this should be taken into account in any analysi
Development of the preterm gut microbiome in twins at risk of necrotising enterocolitis and sepsis
The preterm gut microbiome is a complex dynamic community influenced by genetic and environmental factors and is implicated in the pathogenesis of necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) and sepsis. We aimed to explore the longitudinal development of the gut microbiome in preterm twins to determine how shared environmental and genetic factors may influence temporal changes and compared this to the expressed breast milk (EBM) microbiome. Stool samples (n = 173) from 27 infants (12 twin pairs and 1 triplet set) and EBM (n = 18) from 4 mothers were collected longitudinally. All samples underwent PCR-DGGE (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis) analysis and a selected subset underwent 454 pyrosequencing. Stool and EBM shared a core microbiome dominated by Enterobacteriaceae, Enterococcaceae, and Staphylococcaceae. The gut microbiome showed greater similarity between siblings compared to unrelated individuals. Pyrosequencing revealed a reduction in diversity and increasing dominance of Escherichia sp. preceding NEC that was not observed in the healthy twin. Antibiotic treatment had a substantial effect on the gut microbiome, reducing Escherichia sp. and increasing other Enterobacteriaceae.
This study demonstrates related preterm twins share similar gut microbiome development, even within the complex environment of neonatal intensive care. This is likely a result of shared genetic and immunomodulatory factors as well as exposure to the same maternal microbiome during birth, skin contact and exposure to EBM. Environmental factors including antibiotic exposure and feeding are additional significant determinants of community structure, regardless of host genetics

A field trial of a reusable, hollow, cast-in-situ pile
This paper describes the concept and field testing of a hollow, cast-in-situ, rotary bored pile foundation 1200 mm diameter and 30 m deep. The aim of the foundation is to allow large-diameter piles to be constructed using less concrete than in an equivalent conventional solid pile, and with a view to allowing reuse at a later date. Reuse is made possible because the hollow core of the pile allows access for inspection after demolition of an existing structure. The new piles may also allow modification to enhance load capacity by augering through the base and extending their length. In addition, the piles are better suited than conventional piles for use as ‘energy piles' to allow environmentally friendly heating and cooling. The geotechnical performance of the hollow test pile was comparable with that of a conventional solid pile constructed during the same trial. Leg disorders in broiler chickens : prevalence, risk factors and prevention
Broiler (meat) chickens have been subjected to intense genetic selection. In the past 50 years, broiler growth rates have increased
by over 300% (from 25 g per day to 100 g per day). There is growing societal concern that many broiler chickens have impaired
locomotion or are even unable to walk. Here we present the results of a comprehensive survey of commercial flocks which
quantifies the risk factors for poor locomotion in broiler chickens.We assessed the walking ability of 51,000 birds, representing 4.8
million birds within 176 flocks.We also obtained information on approximately 150 different management factors associated with
each flock. At a mean age of 40 days, over 27.6% of birds in our study showed poor locomotion and 3.3% were almost unable to
walk. The high prevalence of poor locomotion occurred despite culling policies designed to remove severely lame birds from
flocks. We show that the primary risk factors associated with impaired locomotion and poor leg health are those specifically
associated with rate of growth. Factors significantly associated with high gait score included the age of the bird (older birds), visit
(second visit to same flock), bird genotype, not feeding whole wheat, a shorter dark period during the day, higher stocking density
at the time of assessment, no use of antibiotic, and the use of intact feed pellets. The welfare implications are profound. Worldwide
approximately 261010 broilers are reared within similar husbandry systems.We identify a range of management factors that could
be altered to reduce leg health problems, but implementation of these changes would be likely to reduce growth rate and
production. A debate on the sustainability of current practice in the production of this important food source is required
Fifteen new risk loci for coronary artery disease highlight arterial-wall-specific mechanisms
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although 58 genomic regions have been associated with CAD thus far, most of the heritability is unexplained, indicating that additional susceptibility loci await identification. An efficient discovery strategy may be larger-scale evaluation of promising associations suggested by genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Hence, we genotyped 56,309 participants using a targeted gene array derived from earlier GWAS results and performed meta-analysis of results with 194,427 participants previously genotyped, totaling 88,192 CAD cases and 162,544 controls. We identified 25 new SNP-CAD associations (P < 5 × 10(-8), in fixed-effects meta-analysis) from 15 genomic regions, including SNPs in or near genes involved in cellular adhesion, leukocyte migration and atherosclerosis (PECAM1, rs1867624), coagulation and inflammation (PROCR, rs867186 (p.Ser219Gly)) and vascular smooth muscle cell differentiation (LMOD1, rs2820315). Correlation of these regions with cell-type-specific gene expression and plasma protein levels sheds light on potential disease mechanisms

Breaking into the blackbox: Trend following, stop losses and the frequency of trading - The case of the S&P500
In this article, we compare a variety of technical trading rules in the context of investing in the S&P500 index. These rules are increasingly popular, both among retail investors and CTAs and similar investment funds. We find that a range of fairly simple rules, including the popular 200-day moving average (MA) trading rule, dominate the long-only, passive investment in the index. In particular, using the latter rule we find that popular stop-loss rules do not add value and that monthly end-of-month investment decision rules are superior to those which trade more frequently: this adds to the growing view that trading can damage your wealth. Finally, we compare the MA rule with a variety of simple fundamental metrics and find the latter far inferior to the technical rules over the last 60 years of investing
