Multilevel cervical arthroplasty-clinical and radiological outcomes
Cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) is a valid option for single-level cervical disc disease (CDD) as an alternative to fusion. However, the use in 3- and 4-level disc disease is under scrutiny with scarce data published so far. Our aim was to study clinical and radiological outcomes of arthroplasty in patients with multilevel CDD.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Mutual information rate and bounds for it
The amount of information exchanged per unit of time between two nodes in a
dynamical network or between two data sets is a powerful concept for analysing
complex systems. This quantity, known as the mutual information rate (MIR), is
calculated from the mutual information, which is rigorously defined only for
random systems. Moreover, the definition of mutual information is based on
probabilities of significant events. This work offers a simple alternative way
to calculate the MIR in dynamical (deterministic) networks or between two data
sets (not fully deterministic), and to calculate its upper and lower bounds
without having to calculate probabilities, but rather in terms of well known
and well defined quantities in dynamical systems. As possible applications of
our bounds, we study the relationship between synchronisation and the exchange
of information in a system of two coupled maps and in experimental networks of
coupled oscillators
Stir Casting Routes for Processing Metal Matrix Syntactic Foams: A Scoping Review
Metal matrix syntactic foams (MMSFs) are advanced lightweight materials constituted by a metallic matrix and a dispersion of hollow/porous fillers. Physical and mechanical properties can be fitted regarding matrix and filler properties and processing parameters. Their properties make them potential materials for sectors where density is a limiting parameter, such as transport, marine, defense, aerospace, and engineering applications. MMSFs are mainly manufactured by powder metallurgy, infiltration, and stir casting techniques. This study focuses on the current stir casting approaches and on the advances and deficiencies, providing processing parameters and comparative analyses on porosity and mechanical properties. PRISMA approaches were followed to favor traceability and reproducibility of the study. Stir casting techniques are low-cost, industrially scalable approaches, but they exhibit critical limitations: buoyancy of fillers, corrosion of processing equipment, premature solidification of molten metal during mixing, cracking of fillers, heterogeneous distribution, and limited incorporation of fillers. Six different approaches were identified; four focus on limiting buoyancy, cracking, heterogeneous distribution of fillers, and excessive oxidation of sensitive matrix alloys to oxygen. These improvements favor reaching the maximum porosity of 54%, increasing the fillers size from a few microns to 45 mm, reducing residual porosity by ±4%, synthesizing bimodal MMSFs, and reaching maximum incorporation of 74 vol%.</jats:p
Sedentary Time and Physical Activity Surveillance Through Accelerometer Pooling in Four European Countries.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to pool, harmonise and re-analyse national accelerometer data from adults in four European countries in order to describe population levels of sedentary time and physical inactivity. METHODS: Five cross-sectional studies were included from England, Portugal, Norway and Sweden. ActiGraph accelerometer count data were centrally processed using the same algorithms. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to study the associations of sedentary time and physical inactivity with sex, age, weight status and educational level, in both the pooled sample and the separate study samples. RESULTS: Data from 9509 participants were used. On average, participants were sedentary for 530 min/day, and accumulated 36 min/day of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity. Twenty-three percent accumulated more than 10 h of sedentary time/day, and 72% did not meet the physical activity recommendations. Nine percent of all participants were classified as high sedentary and low active. Participants from Norway showed the highest levels of sedentary time, while participants from England were the least physically active. Age and weight status were positively associated with sedentary time and not meeting the physical activity recommendations. Men and higher-educated people were more likely to be highly sedentary, while women and lower-educated people were more likely to be inactive. CONCLUSIONS: We found high levels of sedentary time and physical inactivity in four European countries. Older people and obese people were most likely to display these behaviours and thus deserve special attention in interventions and policy planning. In order to monitor these behaviours, accelerometer-based cross-European surveillance is recommended. The original studies were funded by the Norwegian Directorate of Health and the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences; the Portuguese Institute of Sport; a grant from the Stockholm County Council; and grants from the Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research, and The Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences, and Spatial Planning. Inhibition of ovine in vitro fertilization by anti-Prt antibody: hypothetical model for Prt/ZP interaction
BACKGROUND: The impact of prion proteins in the rules that dictate biological reproduction is still poorly understood. Likewise, the role of prnt gene, encoding the prion-like protein testis specific (Prt), in ram reproductive physiology remains largely unknown. In this study, we assessed the effect of Prt in ovine fertilization by using an anti-Prt antibody (APPA) in fertilization medium incubated with spermatozoa and oocytes. Moreover, a computational model was constructed to infer how the results obtained could be related to a hypothetical role for Prt in sperm-zona pellucida (ZP) binding. METHODS: Mature ovine oocytes were transferred to fertilization medium alone (control) or supplemented with APPA, or pre-immune serum (CSerum). Oocytes were inseminated with ovine spermatozoa and after 18 h, presumptive zygotes (n = 142) were fixed to evaluate fertilization rates or transferred (n = 374) for embryo culture until D6-7. Predicted ovine Prt tertiary structure was compared with data obtained by circular dichroism spectroscopy (CD) and a protein-protein computational docking model was estimated for a hypothetical Prt/ZP interaction. RESULTS: The fertilizing rate was lower (P = 0.006) in APPA group (46.0+/−6.79%) when compared to control (78.5+/−7.47%) and CSerum (64.5+/−6.65%) groups. In addition, the cleavage rate was higher (P < 0.0001) in control (44.1+/−4.15%) than in APPA group (19.7+/−4.22%). Prt CD spectroscopy showed a 22% alpha-helical structure in 30% (m/v) aqueous trifluoroethanol (TFE) and 17% alpha in 0.6% (m/v) TFE. The predominant alpha-helical secondary structure detected correlates with the predicted three dimensional structure for ovine Prt, which was subsequently used to test Prt/ZP docking. Computational analyses predicted a favorable Prt-binding activity towards ZP domains. CONCLUSIONS: Our data indicates that the presence of APPA reduces the number of fertilized oocytes and of cleaved embryos. Moreover, the CD analysis data reinforces the predicted ovine Prt trend towards an alpha-helical structure. Predicted protein-protein docking suggests a possible interaction between Prt and ZP, thus supporting an important role for Prt in ovine fertilization
Mitochondrial haplogroup H1 is protective for ischemic stroke in Portuguese patient
BACKGROUND:
The genetic contribution to stroke is well established but it has proven difficult to identify the genes and the disease-associated alleles mediating this effect, possibly because only nuclear genes have been intensely investigated so far. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) has been implicated in several disorders having stroke as one of its clinical manifestations. The aim of this case-control study was to assess the contribution of mtDNA polymorphisms and haplogroups to ischemic stroke risk.
METHODS:
We genotyped 19 mtDNA single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) defining the major European haplogroups in 534 ischemic stroke patients and 499 controls collected in Portugal, and tested their allelic and haplogroup association with ischemic stroke risk.
RESULTS:
Haplogroup H1 was found to be significantly less frequent in stroke patients than in controls (OR = 0.61, 95% CI = 0.45-0.83, p = 0.001), when comparing each clade against all other haplogroups pooled together. Conversely, the pre-HV/HV and U mtDNA lineages emerge as potential genetic factors conferring risk for stroke (OR = 3.14, 95% CI = 1.41-7.01, p = 0.003, and OR = 2.87, 95% CI = 1.13-7.28, p = 0.021, respectively). SNPs m.3010G>A, m.7028C>T and m.11719G>A strongly influence ischemic stroke risk, their allelic state in haplogroup H1 corroborating its protective effect.
CONCLUSION:
Our data suggests that mitochondrial haplogroup H1 has an impact on ischemic stroke risk in a Portuguese sample
Selected reactive oxygen species and antioxidant enzymes in common bean after Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola and Botrytis cinerea infection
Phaseolus vulgaris cv. Korona plants were
inoculated with the bacteria Pseudomonas syringae pv.
phaseolicola (Psp), necrotrophic fungus Botrytis cinerea
(Bc) or with both pathogens sequentially. The aim of the
experiment was to determine how plants cope with multiple
infection with pathogens having different attack strategy.
Possible suppression of the non-specific infection with
the necrotrophic fungus Bc by earlier Psp inoculation was
examined. Concentration of reactive oxygen species
(ROS), such as superoxide anion (O2
-) and H2O2 and
activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase
(SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) were
determined 6, 12, 24 and 48 h after inoculation. The
measurements were done for ROS cytosolic fraction and
enzymatic cytosolic or apoplastic fraction. Infection with
Psp caused significant increase in ROS levels since the
beginning of experiment. Activity of the apoplastic
enzymes also increased remarkably at the beginning of
experiment in contrast to the cytosolic ones. Cytosolic
SOD and guaiacol peroxidase (GPOD) activities achieved
the maximum values 48 h after treatment. Additional forms
of the examined enzymes after specific Psp infection were
identified; however, they were not present after single Bc
inoculation. Subsequent Bc infection resulted only in
changes of H2O2 and SOD that occurred to be especially
important during plant–pathogen interaction. Cultivar Korona
of common bean is considered to be resistant to Psp and mobilises its system upon infection with these bacteria.
We put forward a hypothesis that the extent of defence
reaction was so great that subsequent infection did not
trigger significant additional response
