This paper discusses issues related to the assessment of children and youth for the identification of giftedness, and presents specific rec-ommendations for educational measures in order to attend to the particular characteristics and needs of these students. We outline the most common difficulties related to the psychological assessment of these children, in-cluding the lack of adequate instruments for the assessment of the multiple dimensions of giftedness, as well as the shortage of training for this identi-fication. Regarding these difficulties, we describe some assessment procedures that assure higher levels of objectivity and validity in data, reducing the possibil-ity of false positives and false negatives in the identification of these stu-dents. In addition to psychological tests, we present the advantages of us-ing multiple informants and the contribution of different professionals and parents for this assessment. On the other hand, as we present giftedness as a result of a developmental process, it is important to conduct students’ as-sessment in phases, including an initial screening phase, followed by the sound assessment of students and nurturing. Finally, we present some sug-gestions for the advancement in giftedness identification and assessment, as a means to support the development of research in this area. This article has been produced with the financial support by Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology (EDU2014-53646-R)

the contribution of confirmatory factor analysis in the evaluation of structural models of cognitive
abilities. Alternative models are tested in a sample of high school and college students (N=849), in a
battery of 12 tests that evaluate three processes (comprehension, reasoning and divergent thinking)
considering four itens contents (verbal, figural-abstract, spatial and numerical). A model with six factors,
that reflects the variance of the cognitive processes involved and the content of the tasks appears
to be the most adjusted. In this context, it is concluded that it may be necessary to re-analyse the traditional
dichotomy between hierarchical and taxonomic models of cognitive abilities, once both are seen
as complementary
Creatividad y alta habilidad
Memory and intelligence : Interdependence according to processes and content of tasks
This study investigates the characteristics of the specific memory factors (processes and content) that are associated to the Gsm from the CHC model. Memory tasks with different content, including various aptitude tests and a
general intelligence test, were administered to a sample of university students. Two models that relate the general Gsm aptitude, with working memory and memory span, and with verbal-numerical and visual-spatial aptitudes were tested. Results indicate good fit indices for both models tested, as well as evidence
for a positive regression between Gsm and working memory and between Gsm
and visuospatial content. In both models we observed standardized regression of
0.54 and of 0.73 between Gsm and factor g. Implications for the understanding
of the relation between memory and intelligence are discussed.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
Torrance Test of Creative Thinking: The question of its construct validity
Some cognitive dimensions are internationally considered by psychologists to describe and to assess creativity. For example, (Guilford, P. (1976). Creatividad y Educaci ´on. Buenos Aires. Ed. Paidos) and (Torrance, E. P. (1977). Discovery and nurturance of giftedness in the culturally different. Reston, VA: Council on Exceptional Children) suggested fluency, flexibility, originality and elaboration are the main cognitive processes used to define and assess creativity. However, data from several empirical studies did not confirm a factor structure in accordance with such cognitive functions, despite of the wide use of TTCT (Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking) in different countries. In this paper, we present new data collected in Spain and Portugal with TTCT. According to our data, those cognitive functions supposedly present on a subject’s performance are not so strong as to explain the variance in scores. Elaboration factors assume some variance explanation, but the main factors are identified with the products in each subtest, suggesting the importance of format, content and demand on TTCT specific tasks. Consequently, we suggest some reflections to amplify the debate concerning the definition of creativity and its evaluation in psychology.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Assessment of scientific creativity thinking: Adaptation and validation of a test for the Spanish population
This paper describes the qualitative and quantitative procedures included in the adaptation and exploratory study of the validation of the Scientific Creativity Test (SCT) of Hu and Adey (2002), with secondary education Spanish students. This test is composed of seven tasks, and students’ answers are assessed based on creativity traits: fluidity, flexibility and originality. Results of 98 students of a sencondary education centre of the Region of Murcia showed that students’ scores are very different based on their level of cognitive ability and curricular contents knowledge, which suggests that the SCT may be used in the identification of gifted and talented students. In addition, results showed that one of the tasks of the Test (“Square”) is clearly distinct from the others, as it assesses with greater precision convergent thinking and students’ geometry knowledge. Furthermore, correlations are particularly high between creativity scores in the crativity dimensions in each task, which hightlights the role of content in creative production
Structural invariance of multiple intelligences, based on the level of execution
The independence of multiple intelligences (MI) of Gardner’s theory has been debated since its
conception. This article examines whether the one- factor structure of the MI theory tested in previous
studies is invariant for low and high ability students. Two hundred ninety-four children (aged 5 to
7) participated in this study. A set of Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence assessment tasks based on the
Spectrum Project was used. To analyze the invariance of a general dimension of intelligence, the
different models of behaviours were studied in samples of participants with different performance on
the Spectrum Project tasks with Multi-Group Confi rmatory Factor Analysis (MGCFA). Results suggest
an absence of structural invariance in Gardner’s tasks. Exploratory analyses suggest a three-factor
structure for individuals with higher performance levels and a two-factor structure for individuals with
lower performance levels
Revisiting the Hubble sequence in the SDSS DR7 spectroscopic sample: a publicly available bayesian automated classification
We present an automated morphological classification in 4 types
(E,S0,Sab,Scd) of ~700.000 galaxies from the SDSS DR7 spectroscopic sample
based on support vector machines. The main new property of the classification
is that we associate to each galaxy a probability of being in the four
morphological classes instead of assigning a single class. The classification
is therefore better adapted to nature where we expect a continuos transition
between different morphological types. The algorithm is trained with a visual
classification and then compared to several independent visual classifications
including the Galaxy Zoo first release catalog. We find a very good correlation
between the automated classification and classical visual ones. The compiled
catalog is intended for use in different applications and can be downloaded at
http://gepicom04.obspm.fr/sdss_morphology/Morphology_2010.html and soon from
the CasJobs database.Comment: A&A in press, english corrections from language editor adde
The Infrared Nuclear Emission of Seyfert Galaxies on Parsec Scales: Testing the Clumpy Torus models
We present subarcsecond resolution mid-infrared (mid-IR) photometry in the
wavelength range from 8 to 20 micron of eighteen Seyfert galaxies, reporting
high spatial resolution nuclear fluxes for the entire sample. We construct
spectral energy distributions (SEDs) that the AGN dominates adding near-IR
measurements from the literature at similar angular resolution. The IR SEDs of
intermediate-type Seyferts are flatter and present higher 10 to 18 micron
ratios than those of Seyfert 2. We fit the individual SEDs with clumpy torus
models using the in-house-developed BayesClumpy tool. The models reproduce the
high spatial resolution measurements. Regardless of the Seyfert type, even with
high spatial resolution data, near- to mid-IR SED fitting poorly constrains the
radial extent of the torus. For the Seyfert 2, we find that edge-on geometries
are more probable than face-on views, with a number of clouds along equatorial
rays of N = 5-15. The 10 micron silicate feature is generally modeled in
shallow absorption. For the intermediate-type Seyferts, N and the inclination
angle of the torus are lower than those of the Seyfert 2 nuclei, with the
silicate feature appearing in weak emission or absent. The columns of material
responsible for the X-ray absorption are larger than those inferred from the
model fits for most of the galaxies, which is consistent with X-ray absorbing
gas being located within the dust sublimation radius whereas the mid-IR flux
arises from an area farther from the accretion disc. The fits yield both the
bolometric luminosity of the intrinsic AGN and the torus integrated luminosity,
from which we derive the reprocessing efficiency of the torus. In the models,
the outer radial extent of the torus scales with the AGN luminosity, and we
find the tori to be confined to scales less than 5 pc.Comment: 26 pages, 8 figures, 9 tables. Accepted for publication in Ap
Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT): Elements for construct validity in Portuguese adolescents. The aim of this work is to study the unidimensional and multidimensional nature of creativity when assessed through divergent thinking tasks, as proposed in Torrance's battery (Torrance Creative Thinking Test, TTCT). This battery is made up of various tasks with verbal and figurative content, aimed at estimating the level of creativity according to the dimensions or cognitive functions of fluency, flexibility, originality and elaboration of the individuals' ideas. This work used a sample of 595 Portuguese students from 5th and 6th grade. The results of confirmatory factor analysis reveals that the unidimensional model (a general factor of creativity) and the model of factors as a function of the cognitive dimensions of creativity, based on task content, do not fit well. The model with the best fit has a hierarchical factor structure, in which the first level comprises the factors for each of the subtests applied and the second level includes verbal or figurative content. The difficulty to verify the structural validity of the TTCT is noted, and the need for further studies to achieve, in practice, better individual creativity scores.
