Thermodynamic anomalies in the presence of dissipation: from the free particle to the harmonic oscillator
A free particle coupled to a heat bath can exhibit a number of thermodynamic
anomalies like a negative specific heat or reentrant classicality. These
low-temperature phenomena are expected to be modified at very low temperatures
where finite-size effects associated with the discreteness of the energy
spectrum become relevant. In this paper, we explore in which form the
thermodynamic anomalies of the free damped particle appear for a damped
harmonic oscillator. Since the discreteness of the oscillator's energy spectrum
is fully accounted for, the results are valid for arbitrary temperatures. As
expected, they are in agreement with the third law of thermodynamics and
indicate how the thermodynamic anomalies of the free damped particle can be
reconciled with the third law. Particular attention is paid to the transition
from the harmonic oscillator to the free particle when the limit of the
oscillator frequency to zero is taken.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Energy transfer between gravitational waves and quantum matter
We study the interaction between gravitational waves and quantum matter such
as Bose-Einstein condensates, super-fluid Helium, or ultra-cold solids,
explicitly taking into account the changes of the trapping potential induced by
the gravitational wave. As a possible observable, we consider the change of
energy due to the gravitational wave, for which we derive rigorous bounds in
terms of kinetic energy and particle number. Finally, we discuss implications
for possible experimental tests.Comment: 8 pages, added appendix
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in women with endometriosis
Experimental investigation of open-ended microwave oven assisted encapsulation process
An open ended microwave oven is presented with improved uniform heating, heating rates and power conversion efficiency. This next generation oven produces more uniform EM fields in the evanescent region forming part of the heating area of the oven. These fields are vital for the rapid and uniform heating of various electromagnetically lossy materials. A fibre optic temperature sensor and an IR pyrometer are used to measure in situ and in real-time the temperature of the curing materials. An automatic computer controlled closed feedback loop measures the temperature in the curing material and drives the microwave components to
obtain predetermined curing temperature cycles for efficient curing. Uniform curing of the lossy encapsulants
is achieved with this oven with typical cure cycle of 270
seconds with a ramp rate of 1oC/s and a hold period of 2
minutes. Differential scanning calorimeter based measurement for the pulsed microwave based curing of
the polymer dielectric indicates a ~ 100% degree of cure
Extreme Domain Wall--Black Hole Complementarity in N=1SUPERGRAVITY with a General Dilaton Coupling
We study supersymmetric (extreme) domain walls in four-dimensional (4d) N=1
supergravity theories with a general dilaton coupling . Type I
walls, which are static, planar (say, in () plane) configurations,
interpolate between Minkowski space-time and a vacuum with a varying dilaton
field. We classify their global space-time with respect to the value of the
coupling . supergravity with , an effective theory
from superstrings, provides a dividing line between the theories with
, where there is a naked (planar) singularity on one side of the
wall, and the theories with , where the singularity of the of the
wall is covered by the horizon. The global space-time (in ) direction) of
the extreme walls with the coupling is the same as the global
space-time (in ( direction) of the extreme magnetically charged black
holes with the coupling .Comment: 11 pages (3 figures available from

Use of residual algae mass for the production of biogas
In the present study, the gas and methane yields of the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus obliquus were experimentally investigated in comparison in batch experiments and continuous experiments. The freshwater algae Chlorella vulgaris showed astonishingly high gas yields in both experiments, although the room load was constantly increased. The salt alga Scenedesmus obliquus was previously oil-extracted. Nevertheless, the residual algae mass during fermentation showed good gas yields despite an increase in salt concentration
Anomaly Structure of Supergravity and Anomaly Cancellation
We display the full anomaly structure of supergravity, including new D-term
contributions to the conformal anomaly. This expression has the super-Weyl and
chiral U(1)_K transformation properties that are required for implementation of
the Green-Schwarz mechanism for anomaly cancellation. We outline the procedure
for full anomaly cancellation. Our results have implications for effective
supergravity theories from the weakly coupled heterotic string theory.Comment: 8 page
Massive Tensor Multiplets in N=1 Supersymmetry
We derive the action for a massive tensor multiplet coupled to chiral and
vector multiplets as it can appear in orientifold compactifications of type IIB
string theory. We compute the potential of the theory and show its consistency
with the corresponding Kaluza-Klein reduction of N=1 orientifold
compactifications. The potential contains an explicit mass term for the scalar
in the tensor multiplet which does not arise from eliminating an auxiliary
field. A dual action with an additional massive vector multiplet is derived at
the level of superfields.Comment: 14 pages, Late
Dynamical Supersymmetry Breaking and the Linear Multiplet
We analyze gaugino condensation in the presence of a dilaton and an
antisymmetric tensor field, with couplings reminiscent of string theories. The
degrees of freedom relevant to a supersymmetric description of the effective
theory below the scale of condensation are discussed in this context.Comment: 17 pages, LaTeX, no figures -- 1 reference correcte
