The impact originated by several public infrastructures (urban development, roads and high-speed train) on the archaeological heritage of the Community of Madrid motivated a considerable number of archaeological interventions. This allowed us to excavate and document different kinds of remains related to this period of our recent history, particularly several fighting positions of the Battle of Madrid, which took place during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939)

    Probing ferroelectricity in PbZr

    Get PDF
The reduction in symmetry associated with the onset of ferroelectric order in PbZr{sub 0.2}Ti{sub 0.8}O{sub 3} (PZT) thin films leads to a pronounced difference at the Ti L{sub 3,2} absorption edges between spectra measured with the x-ray linear polarization perpendicular and parallel to the ferroelectric polarization. We introduce a general method to analyze the observed difference spectra using atomic multiplet calculations. Moreover, we find experimental evidence for structural changes in PZT induced by the reversal of the ferroelectric polarization

Probing the variability in oxidation states of magnetite nanoparticles by single-particle spectroscopy

We have studied the electronic and chemical properties of a variety of ensembles of size-and shape-selected Fe3O4 nanoparticles with single-particle sensitivity by means of synchrotron-based X-ray photoemission electron microscopy. The local X-ray absorption spectra reveal that the oxidation states and the amount and type of cations within the individual nanoparticles can show a striking local variability even when the average structural and magnetic parameters of the monodisperse ensembles appear to be compatible with those of conventional homogeneous magnetite nanoparticles. Our results show the key role played by oleic acid concentration in the reaction mixture on the formation and compositional homogeneity within individual nanoparticles. When the concentration of oleic acid is high enough, the nanoparticles are composed of a Fe3O4 core surrounded by a thin gamma-Fe2O3 shell. However, at a low concentration of the fatty acid, the Fe3O4 nanoparticles are likely inhomogeneous with small inclusions of FeO and Fe phases, as a result of an uncontrolled reduction of Fe3+ cations. All the foregoing underlines the importance of combining both advanced synthesis techniques and complementary single-particle investigations performed on a statistically significant number of particles so as to improve the understanding and control over electronic and magnetic phenomena at the nanoscale

Near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure investigation of graphene

We report the near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectrum of a single layer of graphite (graphene) obtained by micromechanical cleavage of Highly Ordered Pyrolytic Graphite (HOPG) on a SiO2 substrate. We utilized a PhotoEmission Electron Microscope (PEEM) to separately study single- double- and few-layers graphene (FLG) samples. In single-layer graphene we observe a splitting of the pi* resonance and a clear signature of the predicted interlayer state. The NEXAFS data illustrate the rapid evolution of the electronic structure with the increased number of layers.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

The giant squid Architeuthis dux Steenstrup, 1857 is one of the largest and most enigmatic marine species. Its age estimation remains controversial with many estimates of maximum age ranging from 1 to 14 yrs. Successful results regarding the study of aging in cephalopod beaks for some octopod and oegopsid squids support using these structures for age estimation. We analyzed the beaks of 10 individuals, caught between 1995 and 2006, with reconstructed dorsal mantle lengths (DMLs) between 823 and 1418 mm. The beaks were measured and weighed, and their microstructure was analyzed in three ways: (1) in the rostrum area [rostrum sagittal sections (RSS)] for both upper and lower jaws, and the (2) inner lateral wall surfaces (LWS) and (3) inner crest surfaces (CS) for upper jaws. A constant sequence of increments was observed along the RSS, indicating that the use of lower jaws is more feasible due to the higher erosion and tighter packing of increments of upper jaws. The statolith of one individual was analyzed, resulting in 520 increments (579 increments from RSS of its lower jaw). Assuming daily deposition, the age estimations in RSS between 411 and 674 d suggest rapid growth of A. dux, averaging 1.97 mm DML d–1 (SD 0.45). When maximum ages were estimated by applying these results to the largest measured specimens in the literature (e.g., 2400 mm DML), an age of approximately 3 yrs was obtained. Analysis over a greater size range of individuals would allow more accurate age estimations of this emblematic squid.En prensa1,14

A pilot study identifying a set of microRNAs as precise diagnostic biomarkers of acute kidney injury

In the last decade, Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) diagnosis and therapy have not notably improved probably due to delay in the diagnosis, among other issues. Precocity and accuracy should be critical parameters in novel AKI biomarker discovery. microRNAs are key regulators of cell responses to many stimuli and they can be secreted to the extracellular environment. Therefore, they can be detected in body fluids and are emerging as novel disease biomarkers. We aimed to identify and validate serum miRNAs useful for AKI diagnosis and management. Using qRT-PCR arrays in serum samples, we determined miRNAs differentially expressed between AKI patients and healthy controls. Statistical and target prediction analysis allowed us to identify a panel of 10 serum miRNAs. This set was further validated, by qRT-PCR, in two independent cohorts of patients with relevant morbi-mortality related to AKI: Intensive Care Units (ICU) and Cardiac Surgery (CS). Statistical correlations with patient clinical parameter were performed. Our results demonstrated that the 10 selected miRNAs (miR-101-3p, miR-127-3p, miR-210-3p, miR-126-3p, miR-26b-5p, miR-29a-3p, miR-146a-5p, miR-27a-3p, miR-93-3p and miR-10a-5p) were diagnostic biomarkers of AKI in ICU patients, exhibiting areas under the curve close to 1 in ROC analysis. Outstandingly, serum miRNAs estimated before CS predicted AKI development later on, thus becoming biomarkers to predict AKI predisposition. Moreover, after surgery, the expression of the miRNAs was modulated days before serum creatinine increased, demonstrating early diagnostic value. In summary, we have identified a set of serum miRNAs as AKI biomarkers useful in clinical practice, since they demonstrate early detection and high diagnostic value and they recognize patients at risk

Ectoines production from biogas in pilot bubble column bioreactors and their subsequent extraction via bio-milking

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaDespite the potential of biogas from waste/wastewater treatment as a renewable energy source, the presence of pollutants and the rapid decrease in the levelized cost of solar and wind power constrain the use of biogas for energy generation. Biogas conversion into ectoine, one of the most valuable bioproducts (1000 €/kg), constitutes a new strategy to promote a competitive biogas market. The potential for a stand-alone 20 L bubble column bioreactor operating at 6% NaCl and two 10 L interconnected bioreactors (at 0 and 6% NaCl, respectively) for ectoine production from biogas was comparatively assessed. The stand-alone reactor supported the best process performance due to its highest robustness and efficiency for ectoine accumulation (20–52 mgectoine/gVSS) and CH4 degradation (up to 84%). The increase in N availability and internal gas recirculation did not enhance ectoine synthesis. However, a 2-fold increase in the internal gas recirculation resulted in an approximately 1.3-fold increase in CH4 removal efficiency. Finally, the recovery of ectoine through bacterial bio-milking resulted in efficiencies of >70% without any negative impact of methanotrophic cell recycling to the bioreactors on CH4 biodegradation or ectoine synthesis.European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No 837998European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program and the Bio-based Industries ConsortiumJunta de Castilla y León y EU-FEDER (CLU 2017–09, CL-EI-2021–07, UIC 315
