    Beneficial effects of manually assisted chiropractic adjusting instrument in a rabbit model of osteoarthritis.

    Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease characterized by injury of all joint tissues. Our previous study showed that in experimental osteoporosis, chiropractic manipulation (CM) exerts protective effects on bone. We here assessed whether CM might ameliorate OA by improving subchondral bone sclerosis, cartilage integrity and synovitis. Male New-Zealand rabbits underwent knee surgery to induce OA by anterior cruciate ligament injury. CM was performed using the chiropractic instrument ActivatorV 3 times/week for 8 weeks as follows: force 2 setting was applied to the tibial tubercle of the rabbit right hind limb (TM-OA), whereas the corresponding left hind limb received a false manipulation (FM-OA) consisting of ActivatorV firing in the air and slightly touching the tibial tubercle. After sacrifice, subchondral bone integrity was assessed in the tibiae by microCT and histology. Cartilage damage and synovitis were estimated by Mankin's and Krenn's scores, respectively, and histological techniques. Bone mineral density and content in both cortical and trabecular compartments of subchondral bone decreased in OA rabbits compared to controls, but partially reversed in the TM-OA group. Trabecular bone parameters in the latter group also showed a significant improvement compared to FM-OA group. Moreover RANKL, OPG, ALP and TRAP protein expression in subchondral bone significantly decreased in TM-OA rabbits with respect to FM-OA group. CM was associated with lower Mankin's and Krenn's scores and macrophage infiltrate together with a decreased protein expression of pro-inflammatory, fibrotic and angiogenic factors, in TM-OA rabbits with respect to FM-OA. Our results suggest that CM may mitigate OA progression by improving subchondral bone as well as cartilage and synovial membrane status.AODM was supported by grants from the Spanish Chiropractic Association (AEQ).     Mid-infrared Suspended Waveguide Platform and Building Blocks

    In this work we present our recent progress in the development of a platform for the mid-infrared wavelength range, based on suspended silicon waveguide with subwavelength metamaterial cladding. The platform has some intrinsic advantages, which make it a very promising candidate for sensing applications in the fingerprint region. Specifically, it can cover the full transparency window of silicon (up to a wavelength of 8 μm), only requires one lithographic etch-step and can be designed for strong light-matter interaction. Design rules, practical aspects of the fabrication process and experimental results of a complete set of elemental building blocks operating at two very different wavelengths, 3.8 μm and 7.67 μm, will be discussed. Propagation losses as low as 0.82 dB/cm at λo=3.8 μm and 3.1 dB/cm at λo=7.67 μm are attained, for the interconnecting waveguides.Universidad de Málaga.     Albumin-induced apoptosis of tubular cells is modulated by BASP1

    Albuminuria promotes tubular injury and cell death, and is associated with faster progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) to end-stage renal disease. However, the molecular mechanisms regulating tubular cell death in response to albuminuria are not fully understood. Brain abundant signal protein 1 (BASP1) was recently shown to mediate glucose-induced apoptosis in tubular cells. We have studied the role of BASP1 in albumin-induced tubular cell death. BASP1 expression was studied in experimental puromycin aminonucleoside-induced nephrotic syndrome in rats and in human nephrotic syndrome. The role of BASP1 in albumin-induced apoptosis was studied in cultured human HK2 proximal tubular epithelial cells. Puromycin aminonucleoside induced proteinuria and increased total kidney BASP1 mRNA and protein expression. Immunohistochemistry localized the increased BASP1 to tubular cells. BASP1 expression colocalized with deoxynucleotidyl-transferase-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling staining for apoptotic cells. Increased tubular BASP1 expression was observed in human proteinuric nephropathy by immunohistochemistry, providing evidence for potential clinical relevance. In cultured tubular cells, albumin induced apoptosis and increased BASP1 mRNA and protein expression at 6–48 h. Confocal microscopy localized the increased BASP1 expression in albumin-treated cells mainly to the perinuclear area. A peripheral location near the cell membrane was more conspicuous in albumin-treated apoptotic cells, where it colocalized with actin. Inhibition of BASP1 expression by a BASP1 siRNA protected from albumin-induced apoptosis. In conclusion, albumin-induced apoptosis in tubular cells is BASP1-dependent.     Characterization and Modeling of the Liquid Phase of Deep Eutectic Solvents Based on Fatty Acids/Alcohols and Choline Chloride

    The solid-liquid equilibria phase diagrams of eight eutectic systems formed by choline chloride and fatty acids, or fatty alcohols, were measured to characterize the nonideality of the liquid phase of these systems, commonly reported in the literature as examples of type III deep eutectic solvents (DESs), and to evaluate the best modeling approaches to their description. Most of these systems are shown to present only slight deviations from ideal behavior, resulting from a fine balance of the hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl/carboxylic groups with the chloride anion and the interactions present in the pure compounds. The phase diagrams measured were modeled with an associative equation of state (EoS) and a g E model. As an EoS, the perturbed-chain statistical associating fluid theory (PC-SAFT) was used, and this model was able to accurately describe the experimental data and to provide reliable estimates of the eutectic points using just a single binary temperature-dependent interaction parameter that often correlates with the acid/alcohol chain length. The performance of PC-SAFT was further compared with the g E model, a non-random two-liquid model (NRTL), and was found to provide a better description of the experimental data, especially for the more nonideal systems. Ultimately, the data gathered, and the molecular modeling, allowed the discussion of the behavior of fatty acids or fatty alcohols as hydrogen bond donors in choline chloride-based DESs.This work was developed in the scope of Projects POCI-01- 0145-FEDER-007679 - CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials (ref.     A 3D Sensor Based on a Profilometrical Approach

    An improved method which considers the use of Fourier and wavelet transform based analysis to infer and extract 3D information from an object by fringe projection on it is presented. This method requires a single image which contains a sinusoidal white light fringe pattern projected on it, and this pattern has a known spatial frequency and its information is used to avoid any discontinuities in the fringes with high frequency. Several computer simulations and experiments have been carried out to verify the analysis. The comparison between numerical simulations and experiments has proved the validity of this proposed method

    Prevención del fracaso académico universitario mediante tutoría entre iguales

    El propósito de esta investigación fue determinar el impacto de un programa de tutoría entre iguales para prevenir el fracaso académico en la Universidad. La muestra estuvo compuesta por alumnado de nuevo ingreso de las titulaciones de Ingeniería de Caminos, Canales y Puertos, Licenciatura de Farmacia, Licenciatura en Economía e Ingeniería Química de la Universidad de Granada (N = 100). Tras elaborar y seleccionar los instrumentos necesarios que recopilaran la información demográfica y académica pertinente en la muestra seleccionada, y asignar aleatoriamente el alumnado a la condición experimental o control, la intervención consistió en una serie de sesiones de tutoría altamente estructuradas con alumnado de nuevo ingreso, por parte de alumnado de últimos cursos y/o doctorado previamente entrenados para ello. Los resultados procedentes de los análisis paramétricos y no paramétricos pertinentes realizados muestran diferencias estadísticamente significativas en estrategias de aprendizaje en el grupo experimental, y también tamaño del efecto favorable al grupo experimental en la calificación media por crédito matriculado, tasa de rendimiento y tasa de éxito al finalizar la intervención, así como en el computo total del curso académico, incluida la tasa abandono. Esta intervención ha conseguido incrementar el rendimiento académico de los participantes y mejorar la calidad de sus procesos de aprendizaje, contribuyendo a mejorar la eficacia, eficiencia y utilidad de la Educación Superior en las titulaciones intervenidas
