    Influence of Quaternary Benzophenantridine and Protopine Alkaloids on Growth Performance, Dietary Energy, Carcass Traits, Visceral Mass, and Rumen Health in Finishing Ewes under Conditions of Severe Temperature-humidity Index.

    Twenty Pelibuey×Katahdin ewes (35±2.3 kg) were used to determine the effects of the consumption of standardized plant extract containing a mixture of quaternary benzophenanthridine alkaloids and protopine alkaloids (QBA+PA) on growth performance, dietary energetics, visceral mass, and ruminal epithelial health in heat-stressed ewes fed with a high-energy corn-based diet. The basal diet (13.9% crude protein and 2.09 Mcal of net energy [NE] of maintenance/kg of dry matter) contained 49.7% starch and 15.3% neutral detergent fiber. Source of QBA+PA was Sangrovit RS (SANG) which contains 3 g of quaternary benzophenathridine and protopine alkaloids per kg of product. Treatments consisted of a daily consumption of 0 or 0.5 g SANG/ewe. Ewes were grouped by weight and assigned to 10 pens (5 pens/treatment), with two ewes per pen. The experimental period lasted 70 days. The mean temperature humidity index during the course of this experiment was 81.7±1.0 (severe heat stress). There were no treatment effects on water intake. Dry matter intake was not affected (p = 0.70) by treatments, but the group fed SANG had a numerically (11.2%) higher gain in comparison to the control group, SANG improved gain efficiency (8.3%, p = 0.04), dietary NE (5.2%, p<0.01) and the observed-to-expected NE (5.9%, p<0.01). Supplemental SANG did not affect (p≄0.12) carcass characteristics, chemical composition of shoulder, and organ weights (g/kg empty body weight) of stomach complex, intestines, and heart/lung. Supplemental SANG decreased liver weight (10.3%, p = 0.02) and increased visceral fat (16.9%, p = 0.02). Rumen epithelium of ewes fed SANG had lower scores for cellular dropsical degeneration (2.08 vs 2.34, p = 0.02), parakeratosis (1.30 vs 1.82, p = 0.03) and neutrophil infiltration (2.08 vs 2.86, p = 0.05) than controls. It is concluded that SANG supplementation helped ameliorate the negative effects of severe heat on growth performance of feedlot ewes fed high-energy corn-based diets. Improvement in energetic efficiency may have been mediated, in part, by anti-inflammatory effects of supplemental SANG and corresponding enhancement of nutrient uptake

    Aguda por vĂ­a oral adquiriĂł la enfermedad de Chagas (AOACD) se ha convertido en una amenaza importante en algunos paĂ­ses de AmĂ©rica del Sur [1,2]. Hasta marzo de 2013, al menos cuatro han reportado brotes de la enfermedad de Chagas aguda adquirida por vĂ­a oral, en concreto Brasil [3], Venezuela [4], Colombia [5] y Bolivia [6]. Los brotes tambiĂ©n se estĂĄn produciendo probablemente en Argentina y Ecuador, segĂșn algunos informes antiguos [2]. En Venezuela, ha habido por lo menos tres informes epidemiolĂłgicos conocidos de AOACD, la primera en 2007 en Caracas (Chacao) [4], el segundo en 2009 a Vargas [7] y la tercera en 2010 en Caracas (AntĂ­mano) [ 8]. Una caracterĂ­stica comĂșn de estos brotes es que han afectado principalmente a los niños y han dado lugar a una alta tasa de mortalidad entre los casos confirmados. Los informes que describen la investigaciĂłn de estos brotes son de gran importancia cientĂ­fica y epidemiolĂłgica, sin embargo, la informaciĂłn sĂłlo en el primer brote se ha publicado [4]. Por estas razones, se reportan los resultados del cuarto brote de AOACD que ocurriĂł en Venezuela, en el estado de TĂĄchira.Acute orally acquired Chagas disease (AOACD) has emerged as a significant threat in some countries of South America [1,2]. Until March 2013, at least four have reported outbreaks of acute orally acquired Chagas disease, specifically Brazil [3], Venezuela [4], Colombia [5] and Bolivia [6]. Outbreaks are also likely occurring in Argentina and Ecuador, according to some old reports [2]. In Venezuela, there have been at least three well-known epidemiological reports of AOACD, the first in 2007 at Caracas (Chacao) [4], the second in 2009 at Vargas [7] and the third in 2010 at Caracas (Antimano) [8]. A common feature of these outbreaks is that they have affected predominantly children and have led to a high fatality rate among confirmed cases. Reports describing the investigation of these outbreaks are of high scientific and epidemiological significance; however, information on only the first outbreak has been published [4].     FunciĂłn sexual antes y despuĂ©s de la reparaciĂłn quirĂșrgica del prolapso genital

    Objetivo: Comparar la funciĂłn sexual (FS) de mujeres con prolapso genital (PG) antes y despuĂ©s de su reparaciĂłn quirĂșrgica. MĂ©todos: InvestigaciĂłn de tipo comparativa y aplicada, con diseño cuasi experimental, prospectivo y de campo, donde se evaluĂł la FS de mujeres con diagnĂłstico de PG antes y despuĂ©s del tratamiento quirĂșrgico con tĂ©cnicas convencionales, mediante el Cuestionario Sexual para Prolapso genital e Incontinencia Urinaria versiĂłn corta (PISQ-12). Resultados: Al comparar la FS antes y despuĂ©s de la cirugĂ­a reparadora del PG, se determinĂł que tanto la puntuaciĂłn total del PISQ-12 (15,90 ± 6,51 vs. 32,17 ± 3,62) como las puntuaciones de las dimensiones respuesta sexual (5,87 ± 2,80 vs. 10,97 ± 2,80) y limitaciones sexuales femeninas (4,88 ± 3,90 vs. 16,77 ± 3,00) fueron significativamente mĂĄs altas luego de la intervenciĂłn quirĂșrgica (p<0,001), a excepciĂłn del indicador intensidad del orgasmo (0,80 ± 0,71 vs. 0,87± 0,73; p= 0,722) y la dimensiĂłn limitaciones sexuales de la pareja (4,37 ± 2,14 vs. 3,56 ± 2,70; p=0,815) donde sus puntuaciones antes y despuĂ©s del tratamiento quirĂșrgico no fueron estadĂ­sticamente significativas (p&gt;0,05). Conclusiones: Las mujeres con PG presentan una pobre FS, la cirugĂ­a reparadora del PG por tĂ©cnicas convencionales mejorĂł significativamente la FS de las pacientes con disfunciĂłn del piso pĂ©lvico, permitiĂ©ndoles obtener a estas mujeres una vida sexual mĂĄs placentera, con mejorĂ­a de su calidad de vida

    Multicentre, randomised, open-label, phase IV-III study to evaluate the efficacy of cloxacillin plus fosfomycin versus cloxacillin alone in adult patients with methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia: Study protocol for the SAFO trial

    Introduction Methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) bacteraemia is a frequent condition, with high mortality rates. There is a growing interest in identifying new therapeutic regimens able to reduce therapeutic failure and mortality observed with the standard of care of beta-lactam monotherapy. In vitro and small-scale studies have found synergy between cloxacillin and fosfomycin against S. aureus. Our aim is to test the hypothesis that cloxacillin plus fosfomycin achieves higher treatment success than cloxacillin alone in patients with MSSA bacteraemia. Methods We will perform a superiority, randomised, open-label, phase IV-III, two-armed parallel group (1:1) clinical trial at 20 Spanish tertiary hospitals. Adults (=18 years) with isolation of MSSA from at least one blood culture =72 hours before inclusion with evidence of infection, will be randomly allocated to receive either cloxacillin 2 g/4-hour intravenous plus fosfomycin 3 g/6-hour intravenous or cloxacillin 2 g/4-hour intravenous alone for 7 days. After the first week, sequential treatment and total duration of antibiotic therapy will be determined according to clinical criteria by the attending physician. Primary endpoints: (1) Treatment success at day 7, a composite endpoint comprising all the following criteria: patient alive, stable or with improved quick-Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score, afebrile and with negative blood cultures for MSSA at day 7. (2) Treatment success at test of cure (TOC) visit: patient alive and no isolation of MSSA in blood culture or at another sterile site from day 8 until TOC (12 weeks after randomisation). We assume a rate of treatment success of 74% in the cloxacillin group. Accepting alpha risk of 0.05 and beta risk of 0.2 in a two-sided test, 183 subjects will be required in each of the control and experimental groups to obtain statistically significant difference of 12% (considered clinically significant). Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval has been obtained from the Ethics Committee of Bellvitge University Hospital (AC069/18) and from the Spanish Medicines and Healthcare Product Regulatory Agency (AEMPS, AC069/18), and is valid for all participating centres under existing Spanish legislation.     Fungal volatile organic compounds: emphasis on their plant growth-promoting

    Fungal volatile organic compounds (VOCs) commonly formed bioactive interface between plants and countless of microorganisms on the above- and below-ground plant-fungus interactions. Fungal-plant interactions symbolize intriguingly biochemical complex and challenging scenarios that are discovered by metabolomic approaches. Remarkably secondary metabolites (SMs) played a significant role in the virulence and existence with plant-fungal pathogen interaction; only 25% of the fungal gene clusters have been functionally identified, even though these numbers are too low as compared with plant secondary metabolites. The current insights on fungal VOCs are conducted under lab environments and to apply small numbers of microbes; its molecules have significant effects on growth, development, and defense system of plants. Many fungal VOCs supported dynamic processes, leading to countless interactions between plants, antagonists, and mutualistic symbionts. The fundamental role of fungal VOCs at field level is required for better understanding, so more studies will offer further constructive scientific evidences that can show the cost-effectiveness of ecofriendly and ecologically produced fungal VOCs for crop welfare

    The extreme HBL behaviour of Markarian 501 during 2012

    A multiwavelength campaign was organized to take place between March and July of 2012. Excellent temporal coverage was obtained with more than 25 instruments, including the MAGIC, FACT and VERITAS Cherenkov telescopes, the instruments on board the Swift and Fermi spacecraft, and the telescopes operated by the GASP-WEBT collaboration. Mrk 501 showed a very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray flux above 0.2 TeV of ∌\sim0.5 times the Crab Nebula flux (CU) for most of the campaign. The highest activity occurred on 2012 June 9, when the VHE flux was ∌\sim3 CU, and the peak of the high-energy spectral component was found to be at ∌\sim2 TeV. This study reports very hard X-ray spectra, and the hardest VHE spectra measured to date for Mrk 501. The fractional variability was found to increase with energy, with the highest variability occurring at VHE, and a significant correlation between the X-ray and VHE bands. The unprecedentedly hard X-ray and VHE spectra measured imply that their low- and high-energy components peaked above 5 keV and 0.5 TeV, respectively, during a large fraction of the observing campaign, and hence that Mrk 501 behaved like an extreme high-frequency- peaked blazar (EHBL) throughout the 2012 observing season. This suggests that being an EHBL may not be a permanent characteristic of a blazar, but rather a state which may change over time. The one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) scenario can successfully describe the segments of the SED where most energy is emitted, with a significant correlation between the electron energy density and the VHE gamma-ray activity, suggesting that most of the variability may be explained by the injection of high-energy electrons. The one-zone SSC scenario used reproduces the behaviour seen between the measured X-ray and VHE gamma-ray fluxes, and predicts that the correlation becomes stronger with increasing energy of the X-rays

    The CARMENES search for exoplanets around M dwarfs

    Context. The CARMENES instrument, installed at the 3.5 m telescope of the Calar Alto Observatory in AlmerĂ­a, Spain, was conceived to deliver high-accuracy radial velocity (RV) measurements with long-term stability to search for temperate rocky planets around a sample of nearby cool stars. Moreover, the broad wavelength coverage was designed to provide a range of stellar activity indicators to assess the nature of potential RV signals and to provide valuable spectral information to help characterise the stellar targets. Aims: We describe the CARMENES guaranteed time observations (GTO), spanning from 2016 to 2020, during which 19 633 spectra for a sample of 362 targets were collected. We present the CARMENES Data Release 1 (DR1), which makes public all observations obtained during the GTO of the CARMENES survey. Methods: The CARMENES survey target selection was aimed at minimising biases, and about 70% of all known M dwarfs within 10 pc and accessible from Calar Alto were included. The data were pipeline-processed, and high-level data products, including 18 642 precise RVs for 345 targets, were derived. Time series data of spectroscopic activity indicators were also obtained. Results: We discuss the characteristics of the CARMENES data, the statistical properties of the stellar sample, and the spectroscopic measurements. We show examples of the use of CARMENES data and provide a contextual view of the exoplanet population revealed by the survey, including 33 new planets, 17 re-analysed planets, and 26 confirmed planets from transiting candidate follow-up. A subsample of 238 targets was used to derive updated planet occurrence rates, yielding an overall average of 1.44 ± 0.20 planets with 1 M⊕ &lt; Mpl sin i &lt; 1000 M⊕ and 1 day &lt; Porb &lt; 1000 days per star, and indicating that nearly every M dwarf hosts at least one planet. All the DR1 raw data, pipeline-processed data, and high-level data products are publicly available online. Conclusions: CARMENES data have proven very useful for identifying and measuring planetary companions. They are also suitable for a variety of additional applications, such as the determination of stellar fundamental and atmospheric properties, the characterisation of stellar activity, and the study of exoplanet atmospheres

    The CARMENES search for exoplanets around M dwarfs High-resolution optical and near-infrared spectroscopy of 324 survey stars

    The CARMENES radial velocity (RV) survey is observing 324 M dwarfs to search for any orbiting planets. In this paper, we present the survey sample by publishing one CARMENES spectrum for each M dwarf. These spectra cover the wavelength range 520–1710 nm at a resolution of at least R >80 000, and we measure its RV, Hα emission, and projected rotation velocity. We present an atlas of high-resolution M-dwarf spectra and compare the spectra to atmospheric models. To quantify the RV precision that can be achieved in low-mass stars over the CARMENES wavelength range, we analyze our empirical information on the RV precision from more than 6500 observations. We compare our high-resolution M-dwarf spectra to atmospheric models where we determine the spectroscopic RV information content, Q, and signal-to-noise ratio. We find that for all M-type dwarfs, the highest RV precision can be reached in the wavelength range 700–900 nm. Observations at longer wavelengths are equally precise only at the very latest spectral types (M8 and M9). We demonstrate that in this spectroscopic range, the large amount of absorption features compensates for the intrinsic faintness of an M7 star. To reach an RV precision of 1 m s−1 in very low mass M dwarfs at longer wavelengths likely requires the use of a 10 m class telescope. For spectral types M6 and earlier, the combination of a red visual and a near-infrared spectrograph is ideal to search for low-mass planets and to distinguish between planets and stellar variability. At a 4 m class telescope, an instrument like CARMENES has the potential to push the RV precision well below the typical jitter level of 3–4 m s−1
