Toy Models for Galaxy Formation versus Simulations
We describe simple useful toy models for key processes of galaxy formation in
its most active phase, at z > 1, and test the approximate expressions against
the typical behaviour in a suite of high-resolution hydro-cosmological
simulations of massive galaxies at z = 4-1. We address in particular the
evolution of (a) the total mass inflow rate from the cosmic web into galactic
haloes based on the EPS approximation, (b) the penetration of baryonic streams
into the inner galaxy, (c) the disc size, (d) the implied steady-state gas
content and star-formation rate (SFR) in the galaxy subject to mass
conservation and a universal star-formation law, (e) the inflow rate within the
disc to a central bulge and black hole as derived using energy conservation and
self-regulated Q ~ 1 violent disc instability (VDI), and (f) the implied steady
state in the disc and bulge. The toy models provide useful approximations for
the behaviour of the simulated galaxies. We find that (a) the inflow rate is
proportional to mass and to (1+z)^5/2, (b) the penetration to the inner halo is
~50% at z = 4-2, (c) the disc radius is ~5% of the virial radius, (d) the
galaxies reach a steady state with the SFR following the accretion rate into
the galaxy, (e) there is an intense gas inflow through the disc, comparable to
the SFR, following the predictions of VDI, and (f) the galaxies approach a
steady state with the bulge mass comparable to the disc mass, where the
draining of gas by SFR, outflows and disc inflows is replenished by fresh
accretion. Given the agreement with simulations, these toy models are useful
for understanding the complex phenomena in simple terms and for

Power Loss Modelling of GaN HEMT based 3L ANPC Three Phase Inverter for different PWM Techniques
The paper presents a straightforward modelling approach to compute the power
loss distribution in GaN HEMT based three phase and three level (3L) active
neutral point clamped (ANPC) inverters, for different pulse width modulated
techniques. Conduction and switching losses averaged over each PWM switching
period are analytically computed by starting from the operating conditions of
the AC load and data of GaN power devices. The accuracy of the proposed
analytical approach is evaluated through a circuit based power electronics

Comparación del test directo de anticuerpos fluorescentes y el cultivo bacteriológico para detección de Brucella suis
Methods available for detection of Brucella sp from different specimens include bacteriological culture or detection of specific DNA fragments by polymerase chain reaction. The use of fluorescein-labeled anti-Brucella globulin for demonstrating this antigen in animal tissues is a simple, easy, reproducible, cheap and fast technique. The aim of this work was to evaluate the gamma globulin fraction of polyclonal anti-Brucella abortus serum labeled with fluorescein iso-tio-cyanate (FITC-labeled antibody): 1) against different smooth and rough Brucella sp, 2) against bacterium of other genus, and 3) to compare direct fluorescent antibody test results with bacteriological culture for the detection of B. suis in different tissues from infected animals. This conjugate stained all Brucella sp with different intensities but it did not stain any heterologous bacterium tested. Background fluorescence associated with its use on smears from infected sources of different specimens was particularly low. Most of the infected tissues showed the presence of yellowish-green fluorescent organisms with brucella morphology. The tested FITC-labeled antibody allows a quick, effective and inexpensive diagnosis of brucellosis.El diagnóstico de brucelosis se apoya en el cultivo bacteriológico o en la detección de fragmentos de ADN de la bacteria mediante la reacción en cadena de la polimerasa. El empleo de una inmunoglobulina anti-Brucella conjugada a fluoresceína para la detección de este antígeno en tejidos constituye una técnica simple, fácil, reproducible, económica y rápida. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la fracción gammaglobulínica de un suero policlonal anti-Brucella abortus marcada con isotiocianato de fluoresceína (FITC), 1) contra distintas especies lisas y rugosas de Brucella sp, 2) contra bacterias de otros géneros, y 3) comparar los resultados obtenidos con la inmunofluorescencia directa y el cultivo bacteriológico para la detección de B. suis en distintos tejidos de porcinos infectados. Este conjugado detectó todas las brucelas con distinta intensidad de fluorescencia, pero no hubo fluorescencia inespecífica cuando se ensayaron las bacterias de otros géneros. La fluorescencia de fondo en muestras de los distintos tejidos infectados fue baja. La mayoría de los tejidos infectados mostraron la presencia de microorganismos verde-fluorescentes con la morfología de las brucelas. Integrated phenotyping of the anti-cancer immune response in HIV-associated hepatocellular carcinoma
Factors predicting survival in patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer undergoing pancreatectomy with arterial resection
Pancreatectomy with arterial resection is a treatment option in selected patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer. This study aimed to identify factors predicting cancer-specific survival in this patient population. A single-Institution prospective database was used. Pre-operative prognostic factors were identified and used to develop a prognostic score. Matching with pathologic parameters was used for internal validation. In a patient population with a median Ca 19.9 level of 19.8 U/mL(IQR: 7.1–77), cancer-specific survival was predicted by: metabolic deterioration of diabetes (OR = 0.22, p = 0.0012), platelet count (OR = 1.00; p = 0.0013), serum level of Ca 15.3 (OR = 1.01, p = 0.0018) and Ca 125 (OR = 1.02, p = 0.00000137), neutrophils-to-lymphocytes ratio (OR = 1.16; p = 0.00015), lymphocytes-to-monocytes ratio (OR = 0.88; p = 0.00233), platelets-to-lymphocytes ratio (OR = 0.99; p = 0.00118), and FOLFIRINOX neoadjuvant chemotherapy (OR = 0.57; p = 0.00144). A prognostic score was developed and three risk groups were identified. Harrell’s C-Index was 0.74. Median cancer-specific survival was 16.0 months (IQR: 12.3–28.2) for the high-risk group, 24.7 months (IQR: 17.6–33.4) for the intermediate-risk group, and 39.0 months (IQR: 22.7–NA) for the low-risk group (p = 0.0003). Matching the three risk groups against pathology parameters, N2 rate was 61.9, 42.1, and 23.8% (p = 0.04), median value of lymph-node ratio was 0.07 (IQR: 0.05–0.14), 0.04 (IQR:0.02–0.07), and 0.03 (IQR: 0.01–0.04) (p = 0.008), and mean value of logarithm odds of positive nodes was − 1.07 ± 0.5, − 1.3 ± 0.4, and − 1.4 ± 0.4 (p = 0.03), in the high-risk, intermediate-risk, and low-risk groups, respectively. Comparison of an X-ray selected sample of massive lensing clusters with the MareNostrum Universe LCDM simulation
A long-standing problem of strong lensing by galaxy clusters regards the
observed high rate of giant gravitational arcs as compared to the predictions
in the framework of the "standard" cosmological model. Recently, few other
inconsistencies between theoretical expectations and observations have been
claimed which regard the large size of the Einstein rings and the high
concentrations of few clusters with strong lensing features. All of these
problems consistently indicate that observed galaxy clusters may be
gravitational lenses stronger than expected. We use clusters extracted from the
MareNostrum Universe to build up mock catalogs of galaxy clusters selected
through their X-ray flux. We use these objects to estimate the probability
distributions of lensing cross sections, Einstein rings, and concentrations for
the sample of 12 MACS clusters at presented in Ebeling et al. (2007)
and discussed in Zitrin et al. (2010). We find that simulated clusters produce
less arcs than observed clusters do. The medians of the
distributions of the Einstein ring sizes differ by between
simulations and observations. We estimate that, due to cluster triaxiality and
orientation biases affecting the lenses with the largest cross sections, the
concentrations of the individual MACS clusters inferred from the lensing
analysis should be up to a factor of larger than expected from the
CDM model. The arc statistics, the Einstein ring, and the
concentration problems in strong lensing clusters are mitigated but not solved
on the basis of our analysis. Nevertheless, due to the lack of redshifts for
most of the multiple image systems used for modeling the MACS clusters, the
results of this work will need to be verified with additional data. The
upcoming CLASH program will provide an ideal sample for extending our

Both Maternal High-Fat and Post-Weaning High-Carbohydrate Diets Increase Rates of Spontaneous Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Aged-Mouse Offspring
Both maternal obesity and postnatal consumption of obesogenic diets contribute to the development of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, there is no consensus as to whether diets that are high in fat or carbohydrates/sugars differentially influence the development of HCC. Moreover, the long-term effects of prenatal HF exposure on HCC and whether this is influenced by postnatal diet has not yet been evaluated. C57BL/6 dams were fed either a low-fat, high-carbohydrate control (C) or low-carbohydrate, high-fat (HF) diet. At weaning, male and female offspring were fed the C or HF diet, generating four diet groups: C/C, C/HF, HF/C and HF/HF. Tissues were collected at 16 months of age and livers were assessed for MASLD and HCC. Glucose regulation and pancreatic morphology were also evaluated. Liver tissues were assessed for markers of glycolysis and fatty acid metabolism and validated using a human HCC bioinformatic database. Both C/HF and HF/HF mice developed obesity, hyperinsulinemia and a greater degree of MASLD than C/C and HF/C offspring. However, despite significant liver and pancreas pathology, C/HF mice had the lowest incidence of HCC while tumour burden was highest in HF/C male offspring. The molecular profile of HCC mouse samples suggested an upregulation of the pentose phosphate pathway and a downregulation of fatty acid synthesis and oxidation, which was largely validated in the human dataset. Both pre-weaning HF diet exposure and post-weaning consumption of a high-carbohydrate diet increased the risk of developing spontaneous HCC in aged mice. However, the influence of pre-weaning HF feeding on HCC development appeared to be stronger in the context of post-weaning obesity. As rates of maternal obesity continue to rise, this has implications for the future incidence of HCC and possible dietary manipulation of offspring carbohydrate intake to counteract this risk
The Kinematic Connection Between Galaxies and Dark Matter Haloes
Using estimates of dark halo masses from satellite kinematics, weak
gravitational lensing, and halo abundance matching, combined with the
Tully-Fisher and Faber-Jackson relations, we derive the mean relation between
the optical, V_opt, and virial, V_200, circular velocities of early- and
late-type galaxies at redshift z~0. For late-type galaxies V_opt ~ V_200 over
the velocity range V_opt=90-260 km/s, and is consistent with V_opt = V_maxh
(the maximum circular velocity of NFW dark matter haloes in the concordance
LCDM cosmology). However, for early-type galaxies V_opt \ne V_200, with the
exception of early-type galaxies with V_opt simeq 350 km/s. This is
inconsistent with early-type galaxies being, in general, globally isothermal.
For low mass (V_opt V_maxh, indicating that
baryons have modified the potential well, while high mass (V_opt > 400 km/s)
early-types have V_opt < V_maxh. Folding in measurements of the black hole mass
- velocity dispersion relation, our results imply that the supermassive black
hole - halo mass relation has a logarithmic slope which varies from ~1.4 at
halo masses of ~10^{12} Msun/h to ~0.65 at halo masses of 10^{13.5} Msun/h. The
values of V_opt/V_200 we infer for the Milky Way and M31 are lower than the
values currently favored by direct observations and dynamical models. This
offset is due to the fact that the Milky Way and M31 have higher V_opt and
lower V_200 compared to typical late-type galaxies of the same stellar masses.
We show that current high resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations
are unable to form galaxies which simultaneously reproduce both the V_opt/V_200
ratio and the V_opt-M_star (Tully-Fisher/Faber-Jackson) relation.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, accepted to MNRA
Elliptical Galaxies and Bulges of Disk Galaxies: Summary of Progress and Outstanding Issues
This is the summary chapter of a review book on galaxy bulges. Bulge
properties and formation histories are more varied than those of ellipticals. I
emphasize two advances: 1 - "Classical bulges" are observationally
indistinguishable from ellipticals, and like them, are thought to form by major
galaxy mergers. "Disky pseudobulges" are diskier and more actively star-forming
(except in S0s) than are ellipticals. Theys are products of the slow
("secular") evolution of galaxy disks: bars and other nonaxisymmetries move
disk gas toward the center, where it starbursts and builds relatively flat,
rapidly rotating components. This secular evolution is a new area of galaxy
evolution work that complements hierarchical clustering. 2 - Disks of
high-redshift galaxies are unstable to the formation of mass clumps that sink
to the center and merge - an alternative channel for the formation of classical
bulges. I review successes and unsolved problems in the formation of
bulges+ellipticals and their coevolution (or not) with supermassive black
holes. I present an observer's perspective on simulations of dark matter galaxy
formation including baryons. I review how our picture of the quenching of star
formation is becoming general and secure at redshifts z < 1. The biggest
challenge is to produce realistic bulges+ellipticals and disks that overlap
over a factor of 10**3 in mass but that differ from each other as observed over
that whole range. Second, how does hierarchical clustering make so many giant,
bulgeless galaxies in field but not cluster environments? I argue that we rely
