    Cultural Distance and Conflict-Related Sexual Violence

The final version is available from Oxford University Press via the DOI in this recordThis paper examines the relationship between ethnic-based gender norms and conflict-related sexual violence. We generate a novel dyadic dataset that contains information on the ethnic identity of all the actors involved in ethnic civil conflicts around the world between 1989 and 2019 and their use of sexual violence. We exploit ethnographic information to construct a new male dominance index at the ethnicity level that captures deep-rooted gender norms. First, we find that male-dominant armed actors are more likely to be perpetrators of sexual violence. Second, we consider the cultural distance in gender norms between the combatants, and show that sexual violence is driven by a specific clash of conceptions on the appropriate role of men and women in society: sexual violence increases when the perpetrator is more male dominant than the victim. Additional analyses suggest that gender norms influence both the strategic use of sexual violence for military purposes and the expressive use of sexual violence for private motivations. These patterns are specific to sexual violence and do not explain general violence within a conflict. Differences in other cultural dimensions unrelated to gender are not associated with conflict-related sexual violence

We revisit three key topics, which are especially relevant for the current Ukrainian context. 1) The negative long-term impact of bombing campaigns and political repression against civilians. 2) The interplay between forced migration, refugees, and war. 3) The role of gender and war, with a special focus on sex ratios and conflict-related sexual violence. We conclude with an empirical investigation of the Russian war against Ukraine, including aforementioned historical determinants such as ethnic populations, historical political repression and voting outcomes

    Genome-Wide Association Study of <i>VKORC1</i> and <i>CYP2C9</i> on acenocoumarol dose, stroke recurrence and intracranial haemorrhage in Spain

    Acenocoumarol is an oral anticoagulant with significant interindividual dose variations. Variants in CYP2C9 and VKORC1 have been associated with acenocoumarol maintenance dose. We analysed whether any of the 49 polymorphisms in CYP2C9 and VKORC1 previously associated with acenocoumarol maintenance dose in a Genome-Wide Association study (GWAs) in Dutch population are associated with stroke recurrence, intracranial haemorrhage (ICH) and acenocoumarol maintenance dose in a Spanish population. We performed a GWAs using Human Core Exome-chip (Illumina) in 78 patients stroke patients treated with acenocoumarol for secondary prevention enrolled as part of the prospective investigator-initiated study (IIS) SEDMAN Study. Patients were followed-up a median of 12.8 months. Three and eight patients had recurrent stroke and ICH events, respectively. We found 14 of the 49 published variants associated with acenocoumarol maintenance dose (p &lt; 0.05). Six polymorphisms were associated with stroke recurrence and four variants with ICH (p &lt; 0.05). In conclusion, variants in VKORC1 and CYP2C9 are associated with acenocoumarol maintenance dose, stroke recurrence and ICH in a Spanish cohort. These results highlight the relevance of studying pharmacogenetics associated with efficacy and safety of anticoagulant drugs and justify studies with larger sample size and different ethnic populations.</p
