    A population-based case-control study on social factors and risk of testicular germ cell tumours

    Objectives Incidence rates for testicular cancer have risen over the last few decades. Findings of an association between the risk of testicular cancer and social factors are controversial. The association of testicular cancer and different indicators of social factors were examined in this study.<p></p> Design Case–control study.<p></p> Setting Population-based multicentre study in four German regions (city states Bremen and Hamburg, the Saarland region and the city of Essen).<p></p> Participants The study included 797 control participants and 266 participants newly diagnosed with testicular cancer of which 167 cases were classified as seminoma and 99 as non-seminoma. The age of study participants ranged from 15 to 69 years.<p></p> Methods Social position was classified by educational attainment level, posteducational training, occupational sectors according to Erikson-Goldthorpe-Portocarrero (EGP) and the socioeconomic status (SES) on the basis of the International SocioEconomic Index of occupational status (ISEI). ORs and corresponding 95% CIs (95% CIs) were calculated for the whole study sample and for seminoma and non-seminoma separately.<p></p> Results Testicular cancer risk was modestly increased among participants with an apprenticeship (OR=1.7 (95% CI 1.0 to 2.8)) or a university degree (OR=1.6 (95% CI 0.9 to 2.8)) relative to those whose education was limited to school. Analysis of occupational sectors revealed an excess risk for farmers and farm-related occupations. No clear trend was observed for the analyses according to the ISEI-scale.<p></p> Conclusions Social factors based on occupational measures were not a risk factor for testicular cancer in this study. The elevated risk in farmers and farm-related occupations warrants further research including analysis of occupational exposures.<p></p&gt

    CLUES TO THE MEDIEVAL DESTABILIZATION OF THE NEBRASKA SAND HILLS, USA, FROM ANCIENT POCKET GOPHER BURROWS

    The Nebraska Sand Hills are a stabilized dune field in the central United States that reflect past conditions of drought. The most recent drought, known as the Medieval Climatic Anomaly, occurred from A.D. 900 to A.D. 1300 and had an enormous effect on the thriving prairie ecosystem, which included large populations of the plains pocket gopher (Geomys bursarius). Burrows of these organisms across a paleosol-eolian sand boundary in the Sand Hills indicate abrupt climate change during the transition from stabilized to active dune field and from humid to arid conditions. Medieval gophers tunneled at greater depths below the surface than do modern gophers, indicating the behavioral changes these animals underwent to survive during the transition. The gophers were likely surviving on roots remaining in the underlying soil as it was buried by sand; they tunneled .1 m up to the surface to deposit mounds of excavated soil and sand. Most of the burrows occur in areas of low-angle bedding, suggesting loss of vegetation occurred first on the crests of the newly formed dunes while vegetation persisted in the interdunes. Optically stimulated luminescence dates from a dune containing ancient gopher burrows are nearly identical throughout the height of the dune, indicating rapid accumulation of sand. As accumulation of sand was rapid, vegetative loss must also have occurred quickly, though not in a uniform pattern across the region. Pocket gophers were apparently able to survive in areas of remaining vegetation for a short time, but in a relatively short period of time, they were unable to reach their food sources and were forced ultimately to abandon the uplands in the region

    Localness of energy cascade in hydrodynamic turbulence, II. Sharp spectral filter

    We investigate the scale-locality of subgrid-scale (SGS) energy flux and inter-band energy transfers defined by the sharp spectral filter. We show by rigorous bounds, physical arguments and numerical simulations that the spectral SGS flux is dominated by local triadic interactions in an extended turbulent inertial-range. Inter-band energy transfers are also shown to be dominated by local triads if the spectral bands have constant width on a logarithmic scale. We disprove in particular an alternative picture of ``local transfer by nonlocal triads,'' with the advecting wavenumber mode at the energy peak. Although such triads have the largest transfer rates of all {\it individual} wavenumber triads, we show rigorously that, due to their restricted number, they make an asymptotically negligible contribution to energy flux and log-banded energy transfers at high wavenumbers in the inertial-range. We show that it is only the aggregate effect of a geometrically increasing number of local wavenumber triads which can sustain an energy cascade to small scales. Furthermore, non-local triads are argued to contribute even less to the space-average energy flux than is implied by our rigorous bounds, because of additional cancellations from scale-decorrelation effects. We can thus recover the -4/3 scaling of nonlocal contributions to spectral energy flux predicted by Kraichnan's ALHDIA and TFM closures. We support our results with numerical data from a 5123512^3 pseudospectral simulation of isotropic turbulence with phase-shift dealiasing. We conclude that the sharp spectral filter has a firm theoretical basis for use in large-eddy simulation (LES) modeling of turbulent flows.Comment: 42 pages, 9 figure

    Identification of direct residue contacts in protein-protein interaction by message passing

    Understanding the molecular determinants of specificity in protein-protein interaction is an outstanding challenge of postgenome biology. The availability of large protein databases generated from sequences of hundreds of bacterial genomes enables various statistical approaches to this problem. In this context covariance-based methods have been used to identify correlation between amino acid positions in interacting proteins. However, these methods have an important shortcoming, in that they cannot distinguish between directly and indirectly correlated residues. We developed a method that combines covariance analysis with global inference analysis, adopted from use in statistical physics. Applied to a set of >2,500 representatives of the bacterial two-component signal transduction system, the combination of covariance with global inference successfully and robustly identified residue pairs that are proximal in space without resorting to ad hoc tuning parameters, both for heterointeractions between sensor kinase (SK) and response regulator (RR) proteins and for homointeractions between RR proteins. The spectacular success of this approach illustrates the effectiveness of the global inference approach in identifying direct interaction based on sequence information alone. We expect this method to be applicable soon to interaction surfaces between proteins present in only 1 copy per genome as the number of sequenced genomes continues to expand. Use of this method could significantly increase the potential targets for therapeutic intervention, shed light on the mechanism of protein-protein interaction, and establish the foundation for the accurate prediction of interacting protein partners.Comment: Supplementary information available on http://www.pnas.org/content/106/1/67.abstrac

    Room temperature ionic liquid electrolytes for redox flow batteries

    Redox flow batteries (RFBs) usually contain aqueous or organic electrolytes. The aim of this communication is to explore the suitability of room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) as solvents for RFBs containing metal complexes. Towards this aim, the electrochemistry of the metal acetylacetonate (acac) complexes Mn(acac)3, Cr(acac)3, and V(acac)3 was studied in imidazolium-based RTILs. The V2+/V3+, V3+/V4+, and V4+/V5+ redox couples are quasi-reversible in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, [C2C1Im][N(Tf2)]. The Mn(acac)3 and Cr(acac)3 voltammetry, on the other hand, is irreversible in [C2C1Im][N(Tf2)] at glassy carbon (GC) but the rate of the Mn2+/Mn3+ reaction increases if Au electrodes are used. Charge–discharge measure- ments show that a coulombic efficiency of 72% is achievable using a V(acac)3/[C2C1Im][N(Tf2)]/GC cell

    Estudio comparativo entre metodología de aula invertida y metodología tradicional en clases de español, inglés y matemáticas

    The presence of new developments of technologies in the educational field requires an intensive intervention and adaptation toward the use of methodologies related to information technologies and communications (TICs) that contribute to the improvement of the students' academic performance. The objective of this article is to verify if there was a favorable impact on school performance with the use of the Inverted Classroom methodology in comparison with the use of the traditional methodology for the students of the ninth and tenth grade levels in the Spanish, English and Mathematics courses. On the other hand, in addition to goal was to offer a brief description of the concept of the Flipped Classroom with the review of some contributions derived from researchers as input for the students as well as the teachers. This study was of quantitative origin and with a quasi-experimental design. The sample was of 116 students divided into control group (65 students) and experimental group (51 students) of each subject. As an independent variable, the instruments applied were a pre-post test of academic achievement of each unit and the measurement of the results were analized using thet-Test statistical analysis system to verify its reliability. For the stadistical analysis, the IBM version 22 aplication was used. With respect to the results obtained, no statistically significant difference was observed between the pre-post tests before the experimental groups and control groups reasons that will be made known in the discussion and conclusion of the text. I have never seen this in a summary, it is normal to put them here.La presencia de nuevos avances tecnológicos en el ámbito educativo, exigen una intensa intervención y adaptación hacia el uso de metodologías relacionadas con las tecnologías de la información y las comunicaciones (TICs) que contribuyan al mejoramiento del rendimiento académico de los estudiantes. El objetivo de este artículo fue comprobar si existió un impacto favorable en el rendimiento escolar con el uso de la metodología de Aula Invertida en comparación con el uso de la metodología tradicional en los estudiantes de los niveles noveno y décimo grado en los cursos de español, inglés y matemáticas. Por otro lado,  también se intentó dar una breve descripción del concepto de Aula invertida con la revisión de algunas aportaciones de investigadores como aporte hacia el estudiante y al profesorado. Este estudio es de corte cuantitativo y con un diseño cuasi-experimental. La muestra fue de 116 estudiantes y se dividió en grupo control (grupos de 65 estudiantes) y grupo experimental (grupos de 51 estudiantes) de cada asignatura con un total de 116 estudiantes. Como variable independiente, los instrumentos aplicados fueron sobre el rendimiento académico de cada unidad (pruebas pre-post), cuyos resultados fueron analizados utilizando la prueba estadística t de Student para comprobar su fiabilidad. Para el análisis estadístico se utilizó la aplicación IBM SPSS Versión 22. Con respecto a los resultados obtenidos, no se observó una diferencia estadísticamente significativa entre las pruebas pre-post entre los grupos experimental y grupos control motivos que se darán a conocer dentro de la discusión y conclusión del texto.
